I was thinking of Lavos too when I saw that picture.

It was never stated officially as "The End of the World" on 2012. The Mayan Calendar was said to state it was "The End of Human Life as we Know it".
That can mean multiple things right there. Who knows it could mean that humans will evolve to the point where we are not distinguishable as humans but as a different species than human on that date.

Of all the things I have read about it I never came across that one. End of human life? The only thing I always read is that there will be some kind of drastic change. Good or bad, we don't know.
