Default Governor pardons 21 convicted murderers, over 200 people total

Quote:
On his last day as Mississippi governor, Barbour, a Republican, surprised friends and foes by granting more than 200 pardons, clemency or early release for people convicted of crimes including murder, rape and armed robbery. His actions included 21 people convicted of murder, according to NBC News.
U.S. News - Pardon of violent criminals sets up Miss. legal battle

Ok this is crazy. Pardons are a legal power of the governor but this is crazily excessive. It's not the total number of pardons that bother me, but that people convicted of murder and rape are getting pardoned or clemency is insane. Anyone from Mississippi have any thoughts on this?

Miss. judge blocks release of 21 convicts Barbour pardoned

Those releases have been blocked by the judiciary. Former Governor still an asshat.

This is sick. In my opinion though pardons shouldn't exist. Why should you get out of jail because you happen to be on the governors good side or because the president likes you? Too much abuse is possible with them.

Mississippi's Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the controversial pardons of more than 200 convicts that former Gov. Haley Barbour granted on his way out of office, rejecting a challenge by the state's attorney general.

Among the 214 inmates Barbour pardoned before he left office in January were four convicted murderers who had worked as "trusties" at the governor's mansion.

Pardons are great for people, like me, who get the short end. My ex slapped me, and cussed me out. I got slapped for disorderly conduct. Still working on Expungment or, failing that, a pardon.

I firmly believe that no governor should have the right to pardon a convict no matter how big or how small their crime is. This whole pardon thing going on in America is just for the governors to get extra votes in the elections. I can't believe American people are putting up with this stuff.

I'm not surprised one bit. Have you ever driven through Mississippi or Louisiana? Both the cops and government are rotten to the core.

I completely disagree

The pardon is one last fail-safe for a chance at freedom. It is one power that Governors and the President have to grant freedom to people who have been incarcerated through wrong doing. The Governor in Mississippi isn't running for re-election, he isn't even the governor anymore, so it isn't about votes.
