So, with the announcement being today, does anyone have any solid information on these two new products?



What is known:

Journalists have been invited to a "Let's talk iPhone" event at its California campus due to start at 10:00 PDT (18:00 BST).

Doubts surround how different the iPhone 5 will be to its predecessor though some do expect big changes.

The launch will be hosted by Tim Cook, now Apple's full time boss following Steve Jobs' retirement in August.

As ever with Apple launches, exact details of product features will not be known until the event. Expert opinion is divided with some expecting significant changes.

"We're expecting a flagship, high tier product to cement the iPhone's position as the must-have device," said Ben Wood, director of research at analysts CCS Insight.

Gadget site Gizmodo took a different line and said there was only a 10% chance of seeing a new iPhone. Instead, it said, the iPhone 4S will be the new model and it will be cheaper than its predecessor.

Others say the cheaper model will be aimed at Asia, one of the few places where the smartphone has room for growth.

Rumours are also circulating that Steve Jobs will make a cameo appearance even though Mr Cook is expected to be the launch compere.

The event is the first since Mr Cook became official head of Apple. Before now he was an interim boss who oversaw day-to-day running of the company when Mr Jobs was on sick leave.


Background:

The iPhone 4 debuted 15 months ago and the hiatus between that launch and today marks one of the longest periods without a new model in the history of the device. All previous versions, bar the first, have been unveiled in June.

Mr Wood said this might reflect the complexity of the task Apple set itself when getting the iPhone working the iCloud service. This acts as a network-based backup and synchronisation system for Apple's smartphones and tablets

From what I heard there is an iPhone 4+ that will be released in China and maybe the rest of the world.

Don't be mistaken, there WILL be another be a new iPhone more powerful than the 4. Apple isn't just going to give up the high-end smartphone users. The iPhone 5 will be released around the world.

The more I look at it the more I think the iPhone 4+ thing doesn't exist or at least won't be released in the United States.

It better come out in white, my BF wants a phone for his birthday, but he has waited out on teh iPhone for this announcement.

Iphone 4s, apple A5 cpu, 1080p cam, 8 mp cam, faster 3g....

I wasn't expecting much. The real joy of upgrading is in the OS. And I have an iPhone 4 so I will still receive updates for a while, and man does iOS 5 look awesome.

I was really believing for a while that it would get a bigger screen though. This is essentially what I was expecting when I said they will release an iPhone 5. It is an upgrade in the power of the device. What I was expecting with the 4+ rumor was that essentially it was the same power but with a few extra features like a bigger screen.

I didn't expect them to release a 64 GB iPhone, which I think would be a good idea if it were reasonably priced. With a contract I would expect it to be like $299 for a 64GB. $399 is too much for a phone in a contract.

is Siri not a new feature? (but you had ... so there must be more) jaw droped at Siri. I own lots of devices just not a iPhone, no need because I got iTouch

Same design as the old model just as I expected. I liked the iPhone 4's design.
Best part is that it will be available at launch in white. I will buy one with a bumper to gift it. 64GB model FTW!!!!!!!!!!

Will Siri be available through the iOS 5 update or will it be only for the iPhone 4S?

Isn't siri an app? *searches my iPhone* yup it's an app. So it's an app that is integrated with iOS5? or what?



I just started running the Siri app and it says
"I've been replaced! The new Siri is even smarter and better-looking than me, and waiting for you on the iPhone 4S. I'll be leaving for home October 5th."
