And quite convenient and interesting how all those decisions can re-arrange your habits within only one hobby. I bought a 3DS with the intent of making it my exclusive gaming system. I own a PS3 and Wii, but my interest in those two have considerably fallen compared to what they once were. Then came along actually owning a 3DS. As petty as this may sound, the lackluster launch was apparently an unforeseen 'make or break' type of thing for me. After little more than a week or two, I lost interest in my 3DS and decided to put it up until major games are released.
Now that I had lost most interest in 3DS, I needed something more to satiate my desire for gaming. I turned to my PS3, because heaven knows the Wii isn't getting any proper releases any time soon. I fell in love with Plants vs Zombies for its simple and addicting gameplay. I played Portal 2 and completed it twice, loving every moment of it. However, the PSN outage created a problem: I couldn't play the game online.
Once again, I was stuck at a gaming crossroads. I couldn't play the co-op Portal 2, so what else could I do to occupy my time? Portal 1 and 2 being the only Valve games I had played before, I wanted to see more of what they could do. I downloaded Half-Life from Steam and realized this is certainly a developer I can support. Because Steam has tons of free demos, I sampled out genres that were new to me as well. And I suddenly realized.. this complex type of gaming is something I'd been wanting for a long time, but didn't know where to find it.
So in effect, the PSN outage has birthed the PC gamer inside of me. One door closes and another opens, that kinda thing. As for my PS3 and 3DS, I will still be using them for major releases, but I believe my buying habits for both are going to be quite lower than I expected just a month ago.
For the 3DS I will buy mostly just first-party games, excluding the cash-in remakes such as OoT and Star Fox 64. Specifically, any possible release of an Advance Wars 3DS is a 100% buy for me, as well F-Zero, Pikmin, and any original entries in the Mario/Zelda series. Where third parties are concerned, I can't really say. I'm really trying to be a conservative buyer here and only get the games I would consider a 10/10, in an attempt to cut spending costs.
For the PS3 the only games I want to buy in the foreseeable future are The Last Guardian, Shadows of the Damned, L.A. Noire, and Catherine. It's a lower number of games, but again they are all games that I think I would consider a 10/10 and that's all that matters.
