| The linear, highly story and character development based gameplay of Japanese RPG's, and are usually designed similar to anime characters. These often take around 80 hours to fully complete and include games like final fantasy, dragon quest, star ocean, .Hack, Tales of the Abyss, Chrono Trigger, etc Or the non-linear, completely expansive gameplay of Western RPG's that focuses more on exploration and making your own story but usually does not focus on character development nor main storyline driven gameplay. These include fallout, the elder scrolls, dragon age, demons souls, etc, and can take hundreds of hours to fully complete. Which do you prefer? I personally don't have much experience with western rpgs because I grew up with JRPGs, but I am going to be getting the 5th anniversary edition of Oblivion and giving it another chance and playing it with a different approach. My original was the approach of a JRPG, which caused me to play oblivion and be like "where the hell is the storyline?" JRPG's are what I grew up with, and I definitely enjoy not having to dig through a bunch of stuff to find a story to follow... However, JRPG's have gotten pretty bad as of late. Even the best JRPG series have become stale and absolutely horrid compared to older games of the series(Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest) Last edited by Lazerith; 06-25-2011 at 02:30 PM. |

I'd disagree with your assessment on western RPGs lack in character development. Bioware in particular is a Western RPG developer whose games central focus is about character development... while that whole pesky trying to save the land/world/galaxy/all of creation thing is going on. The thing is how those characters develop... is up to you. That isn't to say I don't like JRPGs, I do, and have enjoyed a fair number... but I like choice more, and certainly buy more wRPGs these days. Which isn't really all that surprising. I spent a good number of years playing pen and paper table top role playing games, the ultimate freedom of choice game. For me there is enjoyment in the choice... which might be why my favorite JRPG is Chrono Trigger. |

JRPGs tend to have better stories and characters, but suffer from being linear. WRPGs are more open and have high replay value. I love JRPGs, but tend to play WRPGs more because of the replay value. |

WRPGs by a mile. I am sick of JRPGs cookie-cut plots, one-dimensional characters, and dated gameplay. Yes, there are exceptions (shin megami tensei), but overall, I got over them in my mid-teens. Everyone needs to play Planescape Torment. |

I've probably played JRPGs the most out of the two, but I'm looking forward to certain WRPGs. Toughie
