I've heard that general literacy rates have been increasing. Despite how many old people may decry these darn kids today with their texts and tweets studies indicate that the simple act of of writing (in this case typing) messages everyday is increasing literacy. It is certainly different from my day and age growing up in the late 80s early 90s. We didn't write letters. We may have passed notes in class, but that doesn't measure close to the sheer amount of texting going on today. In addition as the internet becomes the primary form of entertainment over the television, the need to read and write to navigate the interwebs is essential. So the generation coming up will likely have higher literacy rates than my generation. Furthermore studies have indicated that kids know the difference between texting a friend and writing a paper. Unless they are particularly dim bulbs txting 2 much 8n't a prblm. They know how to write properly, they just choose not to to their peers. I know I know citation needed right? Positive Effects Of Texting In The Classroom - Tech-Nation Can Texting Improve Your Child’s Reading Skills? : Internet Safety 'Gr8 Db8' Defends The Linguistics Of Texting : NPR Study: Kids Fixated With Television, Internet and Texting : NPR Granted it annoys the hell out of me. I tend to put more thoughtful consideration to posts that are properly formatted. Just goes to show I'm old, and the wolves are out to get me.

| And an utter lack of respect for those who are supposed to read the quick scribbles. If you expect someone else to take the time and read your posts/messages the least you can do is take a second to write coherently, check your spelling and punctuation and capitalize the start of your sentences. It's a matter of respect and etiquette. |

A lot of kids at school are too busy in class trying to draw attention to themselves that they belong at least two grades down from where they are. Ugh, I hate it when a teacher selects someone to read some text and then he/she reads it at snail pace, ignores punctuation and struggles to correctly pronounce (or pronounce at all) a word with more than two syllables. It's so pathetic that they haven't learnt to properly read by high school.

Incorrect grammar does comes off as a nuisance to some. Still, I don't believe one should draw a conclusion on another's intelligence based on a number of posts missing an apostrophe here and a capitalization there.

| That's a big difference from people who constantly post in the exact same way with almost proper punctuation or grammar, or at least a lot of it wrong.

| And I'd agree with you. The problem is that people simply make a lot of unconscious judgements about those who type incorrectly. Like I said, even though I know people can be intelligent and type without proper grammar, I still find myself making these assumptions, even though I don't intend to. It's just something people should avoid if they want to be respected.
