Default Is my manager doing the right thing?

Your in for a long read....sorry I have to vent.

So I work at Wal-Mart and I have this one manager who has really been pissing me off. Im an overnight stocker and every night you go in you get assigned to a area to stock for that night. So you might be in grocrie isles 1-4, or paper towels/ toilet paper or laundry detergent, etc etc .

Anyways so you get your assignment for the night and then usualy your working alone to put out pallets of goods. Sometimes you get huge work loads and sometimes its easier but a small night is like less than 10 pallets which is still quite a bit.

So now that you know what I do I gotta ask if my manager is in the right for coming up to me any night he works saying "alright im gunna set this deadline for you to be done at 2am". Or whatever times he says but there always unrealistic times. Today I had 17 pallets he wanted to me put out in 4 hours. I also have to take my boxes to the backroom every so often so I keep the isles clean so you can imagine its hard, if not impossible to get done in 4 hours. So I asked around and found out hes giving me and others these "deadlines" that for the most arent possible just to see how hard we can work . Hes a newer guy and hes feeling us out for what we can do.

I think thats a dick move, couldnt he just say "work as hard as you can please" instead of giving me panic attacks trying to get all this work done in time thats not possible. Even though I found out from other workers hes just doing this to see how hard we can work, when I tell him im done 2.5 hours after I was "supposed to be done" he still acts mad. I promise you I worked as hard as I could, I was short of breath and sweating from busting my ass....the guys never happy with me.

Before you say im lazy, anyone who has ever worked stock should know that its not possible for one man to do it in that time. the pallets are stacked taller than me and have tons of boxes that can go in several isles so your running around, and sometimes it takes a second to find a place for an item.

so is my manager doing the right thing? I see his motivation but I think hes being mean about it.

I would have to know what the stuff you have to stock is like. I work at McDonald's and I have done truck before. Our pallets are barely able to fit in our door. We get a bunch of them, if I had to guess a number it would be around 12 or so. We have to get these done within 2 hours.

So if it's anything like what it is at McDonald's (which I doubt) then yeah that is perfectly reasonable and there is no reason you can't do it.

How many people work on those? Im going at it alone, there as tall as I am and can be spread out over 4 isles sometimes. Plus at McDonald's your probably leave your stuff boxxed up because its just food you prolly throw in a freezer right?

I have to open ever package and put those items on a shelf. One could have 50 things of jello mix, 30 rolls of paper towels, etc etc.

I asked a few people at work if he really expected me to be done, they said he was seeing how hard I would work. Also wheil I was on my lunch break I said to a few other long time workers that I was afraid I wont be done by the time he said, they laughed and said :did you really think you would get it done by then?"

So I assure you im not lazy. I honestly work really hard....to damn hard if you ask me considering I only make like $8.80 an hour =/

Default I work there

Haha dude I work there as overnight too so I know where you're coming from. While I think 17 pallets is an over exaggeration, that is a dick move on your managers part. Over here at my walmart they're hiring NO one for the season. So I think walmart just sucks period. You should probably talk with personnel though whenever they come in and bring it up with them. Good luck!

Sounds like hes using scare tactics, I wouldn't let it get to you too much. If you're working to the best of your ability, thats all that you can do. I'd just hang in there and not let his words eat at you. (Thats the worst thing you can do is let it eat at you, even though I know its hard not to be upset sometimes.) Maybe he'll soften up on you guys soon, if he really is just testing the waters.

I've worked shipment for Old Navy and they gave us the same BS. The way I look at it is you're getting paid on an hourly basis with little to no benefits. (I'm assuming) And if they have unrealistic expectations then that's their problem. They want something done that fast then let them give it a shot and time their asses.

They're just giving you **** because they can, just ignore them, do your job the best you can, and make your paper. That company has 0 loyalty to you and will cut you at the drop of the hat so don't bother trying to be loyal or anything to them.

Those are some very poor managerial skills. I understand him having to keep several employees from slacking off, but setting unreasonable (I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt here) deadlines are not the way to fix that. Still, he's your manager, so you're pretty much going to have to suck it up. Wal-Mart's just not a great place to work.

My manager is a generally hands-off guy; he tells us what needs to be done, and we do it. There's no forcing us to meet any deadlines beyond a general, "Try to have this done by the end of the week." It lets the employees work at their own pace, with a bit of direction when things get off-track, and the ones that do well are the ones that stay on in the off-season. It works really well.

Setting unreasonable goals is a good skill for a manager at least in that regard. What do you do when you're tasked with an unreasonable goal from an authority figure? You try and make it anyway. You work harder and faster for the same price. It saves money to make you work faster.

Yeah because Wal-Mart just doesn't have enough profits as is, they need to try to cut money from their minimum wage earning minions.

TC, you could always go in to business yourself. Entrepreneurship FTW!

Any money they can save can be counted as extra money earned.
