I actually disagree. A parent should be able to buy violent games for their kids, but a 10 year old should not be able to stop into a store after school and buy Grand Theft Auto behind his or her parents back.

Also even though violence is in other media formats, I believe those should also be restricted to minors. (Except with a parent or guardian present.) Video games should be restricted even more so however... Games are a much more mentally active and involved activity than movies or T.V. In a movie you may be watching a killing, in a video game you are commiting a killing. For a young child this is much harder to distinguish.

With all that said at the end of the day the parents should still be paying attention to what their children are doing. I think the main reason I would have liked to see this pass is because I have little faith in todays parents.

Someone seriously took 'video game violence' to court? How dumb

I would be comfortable with just using the rating system like the movie industry does. If you are ok with a minor watching an R rated movie you can buy it or rent it for them. It shouldn't be any different with video games.

The reality is the games already have a rating system and most stores won't sell to minors. So making it a law would change almost nothing. It just would make sure small stores can't sell to minors and that the cashiers have to be a little strictier and informed. (No different than movies, smokes, beer, etc.)

We shouldn't have to compensate for the stupid kids who have mental problems that take knives and stab their sisters and mothers after seeing MW2.
I'm a kid, and I play Mortal Kombat, Call of Duty, and God of War, but look at that. I haven't killed anyone.

Are you kidding? In California we have all sorts of insane things. This one idiot lawyer got silver Dragées banned. (They're those little EDIBLE decorations that the Doctor calls "edible ball bearings.") In San Francisco they're trying to ban circumcision - even though that would be unconstitutional as it's an important religious right in both Judaism and Islam and the Constitution promises people can practice their religion without fear of persecution.

The fact is, California is freaking insane. If I could afford to move I'd so go to a state where I could get my edible ball bearings. (Anyone want to sneak some to me?)

I grew up with lots of violent tv shows like A-Team, Charlie's Angels, Bionic Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, Batman, Star Trek, etc. It didn't make me violent. Because my parents taught me better. People should stop scape goating - violence is caused by a combination of bad parenting and a person's free will. No matter what, some people are just going to choose to be bad. But if you're a good parent they have the tools to choose to be good instead. Banning violent video games won't help. Banning bad parenting will.

But there are people who refuse to believe that and are always looking for excuses. The games kids play, the shows they watch, the books they read, etc. They just don't want to admit they're lousy - and likely lazy - parents. Like my brother's new wife who has an 8 year old who is always threatening to kill people, even pulled a knife on my mom, and she thinks he's perfectly normal and never punishes him. Even blames the kid's dad for it even though he only ever has the brat one or two weeks out of the year. It's her fault he's like that and no one else's.

I can see where you're getting at.
My parents actually pay attention to what video games I get, but I don't know anybody with strict-well loving-parents like the ones I have (not bragging). Nowadays Parents just seem to not care anymore. My brother went to pre-order Gears of War 3, but my dad went along with my brother to Gamestop to pre-order the game just recently and since my bro is old enough to play it (18, well, mature enough) my dad was A-OK with it. I dunno, I just don't see many active parents caring for what their kids play, see, read.. etc. which is why I see this really pointless to discuss. they only start to care at the last minute. (well, from what I've seen)
this is just an opinion.

Like I said, insane kids who try to kill people after playing Mortal Kombat.
I'd put the kid in military school if I were his dad.
