Default Playstation Vita to launch in January or February in the UK, misses Christmas boost

PlayStation Vita UK release date to miss Xmas 2011 - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

If so then the Playstation Vita has just lost the UK handheld wars to the Nintendo 3DS. And with the 3DS getting Super Mario 3DS, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D and Mario Kart 3DS around Christmas it's going to have massive sales and huge lead over the PS Vita when it launches.

I seem to remember the PSP doing better in the UK than in the States, maybe Sony is being overconfident? Or stupid. They are strangers to neither stupidity nor overconfidence.

Either way I'm sure it'll have a respectable launch, although I don't see myself buying one.

I thought is was gonna have a good launch but now I'm not so sure. For starters everyone would've gone for 3DS because the PS Vita would've have been out for Christmas and in January everyone will be skint from Christmas and won't be looking to buy a £230 or £280 console with about 5 £40 games.

Yeah, that is kinda dumb if it is true. They want the hardcore to buy first then spread the word? I wouldn't really rely on anyone to spread the word for them...they should get those sales when people are out trying to buy whatever their family members want, intentionally going broke.

I would just wait for the official launch dates though from Sony themselves...this is the common speculation that goes on before release dates are officially released. While waiting for the 3DS, so called Nintendo representatives said "such and such" about the date.

Geez, relax! It's just ONE Christmas. It's not like everyone who buys a system does so by the first holiday season it's on the market. No reason to start tolling the death bell or anything. The two systems will be competing for several years, after all.

Yeah but it's this early stage where the sales are at the maximum, the hype is big and the consoles are active with owners regularly buying games. If Sony loses this period then the Vita is finished. That's why even know the PS3 and Xbox 360 outsell the Wii now they lost that early stage so the Wii beat them massively selling over 86 million units while their tied at 50 million units sold and they will never surpass the Wii's sales because of that massive lead.

Let's put this into perspective, shall we? The Wii built up that sales lead over THREE Christmas seasons, not to mention the rest of the time in between those years, where the thing was considered the hottest gaming item on the market the entire time. Let's also not forget the price advantage it had on those other two systems, especially the PS3.

Sony has been doing this whole "system manufacturing, marketing, and selling" thing for a while now. I think they have a pretty good idea of what they're doing and if they thought they were going to lose an entire "war" over one Christmas season, they would be rushing it to market. I would be more worried that they support the system seriously this time out to gain whatever ground they do lose, instead of treating it like the afterthought that the original PSP became. THAT'S going to be where this "war" of yours REALLY takes place.

Added after 2 minutes:

Oh, and the sales aren't necessarily at maximum during the very first Christmas a system has. Have you been doing this "armchair sales analyst" thing very long?

But that's a different story. There was so much hype around the Wii and someone has to sell more. The real comparison would be with the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 are 55 million and worldwide sales of PS3 are 50 million despite the 360 being out a year longer. Worldwide, the PS3 continues to outsell the 360 and is expected to outsell the 360 by the end of the year. I would be surprised if it didn't surpass the 360 by the end of the year.

So, a head start doesn't really do as much good as you would think

Yeah but even though the PS3 came out a year later when it did release it was just before Christmas. If the Vita was coming out just before Christmas then I think it would stand a chance but now all the people who would've bought their friends and family 3DS'. Gamers will see Super Mario, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater, Mario Kart and all the other games it's built up and that the Vita isn't out so go for the 3DS. And don't think many people will be able to afford a Playstation Vita after spending all that money on Christmas presents.
