| quote: The ‘NGP’. The ‘Next Generation Portable’. The ‘PSP2’. These are all synonyms for the successor of the PSP. But what is the final name? The NGP was officially announced in January of this year. The release of the PSP successor itself wasn’t a big shock. We all knew it had to come eventually. The real shock was the specs of the device, which was essentially credited as a PS3 Portable with similar graphics. After the announcement it became a tad silent around the NGP as Sony is waiting on the E3 to announce more. But today we received some new, and exclusive, information from an anonymous source. The official name of the NGP! Rumor has it that the new Sony handheld will bear the name PS Vita. Vita is Latin/Italian for ‘life’. Does Sony hope to bring life back into their stock? Do they want to rejuvenate the PSP? Revitalize your needs for portable gaming? Our source tells us that this will be the definite and final name of the new system Sony will bring out at the end of 2011. Sony is expected to give further announcements on the E3 next week. P.S. Please remember to take this with a grain of salt and this is NOT fake information that we have made up. The source cannot be proven reliable, of course, but this site was not set up with the intention of getting hits with bogus information. Other sites may do this but to be honest, I think that’s pretty sad. To reiterate, please don’t take this as fact and look to E3 for the final name; hopefully we’ll have it right! In my opinion this is a very surprising name. Mainly because it will be the first innovative name Sony is using for any of its consoles/handhelds. The above is of course still speculation and rumours and we have no confirmation as of yet but we will have some soon. |

It's certainly a fitting name, given their current situation. I hope it's an excellent console...they need one.

How is a name ever innovative? I still believe they'll call it PS3P. |

I really dont think they are going to call it PSP2. Nintendo already showcased that some devices are purely hunted by names. PSP2 would sound to a lot of people to much nerdlike i think. to complicated for some people, and it has a haunted name in the west by retailers that simple are not able to sell the devices or even stopped buying them at all ( specially after the psp go failure ). NGP is not going to be the real name. you simple cant say next generation portable as thats going to confuse consumers when a new generation of handhelds popup. besides that NGP is a horrible name for the normal men, not catching. NGP + PSP2 names have a 25% probably in my book. I cant see into the future. but i highly doub that they go for it. Its non appealing, to hard, haunted name by casuals etc. The best thing what they could do is just call it Sony playstation and some friendly easy name. much like what they choose there. Nintendo DS was simple , nintendo WII was a friendly name etc. Vita = life = a truck ton more friendly towards the world on name base. and i do find it a catchy name in general even while i dislike the word at this time. Speak it out: NGP PSP2 Vita I think vita is a lot better then those other 2. and far more casual orientated. The cutting down in specs = a result to keep it in price line of the 3DS and they are able to keep the price way closer towards the 3DS. its going to be about the same price as apple lowest device that ipod or whatever its called. And they can cut it down easier in price on top of it. This makes the whole device more casual friendly, more competing, and the name will be liked beyond better by many people, even when the core dislikes the name atm. If somebody asks what does vita mean? its life. oh beautiful. Instead of what does psp2 mean? playstation portable 2. They directly relate it towards death / murder games etc, because of a portable playstation 3. NGP what does it mean? next generation portable. oh that sounds way to expensive, yes its 300+ bucks on top of it. Nvm. I do think vita is going to be it ( or a equal level name ) the vita being italian gives it somekind of extra meaning towards it and makes it sound fancy. Lets not forget playstation fans / and core gamers that where already interested in it on the internet, do already know about its existence. Naming has no use for those people. I dont like it. PSP 2 or even NGP would be much better but in the end it doesn't really matter as long as it delivers the goods.

That sounds interesting. I guess we'll have to wait until E3 to hear more details..
