Default Question about memory cards

I bought a SDHC, 16GB, class 6 memory card for my 3ds but the memory card don't really have 16 Gb, it has 14,8Gb.

This also happened with the 2Gb card that came with the 3ds(it less than 2 Gb) and my pc that should have 1000Gb and only have about 950Gb.

Why this happen?

i think the companies just put a rounded up number to make it look like it has more memory. its never going to be exactly correct.

Stole this from another forum:
"That's typical, you'll notice it with all flash media and hard drives.

It has to do with the way space is calculated. Memory is based in powers of 2, ie: * 2^0 = 1 * 2^1 = 2 * 2^2 = 4 * 2^3 = 8 * 2^4 = 16 * 2^5 = 32 * 2^6 = 64 * 2^7 = 128 * 2^8 = 256 * 2^9 = 512 * 2^10 = 1024 So 1 kb is really 1024 bytes. As such, there are 1024 kb in a megabyte and 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte, etc. The discrepency comes from manufacturers using the literal meaning of the prefixes (kilo- = 1000, mega- = 1,000,000, etc)

Some simple division will show you how you go from 16GB to 14.8GB, note that some space is taken up in the formatting."
