Default Quirkster: What Has Science Done?

Netflix has separated their disc delivery service into a different company, Qwikster.

I'll give you a moment for that cringe-inducing name to sink in. All done? Good. We'll continue, then.

This comes alongside the announcement that they'll now offer game delivery at an additional charge. Yep, now they give us game delivery! Not when they're just Netflix, but when they're two separate companies!

But the question arises: Why even have 2 companies? Well, I'll let these two explain it. I can't guarantee this is a satisfactory answer, but it's still an answer:

Your thoughts?

It's a pretty bad name for a company. It's not a bad name for a certain member we have here.

It's just a really foolish move. I was hoping that email I got this morning from Netflix was going to tell me they fixed their prices and will start having a lot more new releases on their streaming service. Nope. Same prices and a lack-luster streaming selection. Redbox better brace themselves for a rush of new customers.

So why are there negative connotations coming from this? This seems like a good thing, right?

I just caught that as well. Oh, and they lost their contract with Starz which means they won't have the next season of Spatacus. There's my cancelation.

No, it's very bad. One, because Netflix customers wanted them to fix their pricing and go back to letting their customers get DvDs and streaming. They did the opposite. Two, splitting your very well known brand name like that is just bad marketing. Also, people don't want the hassle of having two rental Qs and two accounts to manage.

Hmm...I was aware that there were contract disputes between Netflix and Starz but I thought they had until February before there was no turning back....

They need to get some other clients on board, or merge with Hulu or something.

Holy monkey, you scared me there! Given how many accounts I have as 'quirkster', it'd be a bit like having a 555-1212 telephone number. (To non-US people, that's the fictitious number they say/show in movies/tv/etc. And people still actually dial it. )

'Qwikster' is a much more intelligent choice for a name.

_______

One thing I didn't get from the video was why "DVD and streaming will be much better because they're separate." I can see why it'll be better for the companies if they don't have to focus on two completely different styles of business. I can imagine that if DVD rental is going the way of the dodo, that they'd rather not have that failure take down their streaming business, too. But they don't do a particularly good job saying why it'll be good for customers, even though that's what they're trying to imply.

Oh, well. My condolences to DVD-renters. Ouchies on the price increase.

I don't get the anger directed at Netflix over the price hike. The true culprits are the movie studios now charging Netflix inflated prices for streaming and rental rights because Netflix has proven to be a viable business and is eating into DVD and BluRay sales. Is Netflix just supposed to eat the increased cost of content? Also complaining about what movies Netflix does and doesn't have on streaming is NOT THEIR CHOICE, again the film companies choose what they will allow Netflix to distribute.

But I digress to the point, this Qwikster thing... yeah I think it is a stupid move to separate the business, I'm sure there is some reason to do it, tax dodge, or perhaps it allows them to negotiate for distribution rights separately. The Netflix brand is such a powerhouse I can't help but feel in the long run this is a bad move.

In either case I'll reserve judgement until I see the cost for the upgraded game rental services. I haven't rented a game in years, I'll have to think about it.
