Default Should I get a Mac?

I've really been due for a new computer for quite some time now because I have a slow 2007 lappy.
I need the Mac for video editing, sound recording,(podcasts, some songs played by my friend) and some mild gaming (Half-Life 2, Garry's Mod, Team Fortress 2, etc.)
I was thinking about building a computer from the ground up, although I can get good sound recording software (audacity) and a good graphics card, I still have trouble getting a good video editor (since sony vegas is $600 and the adobe premier and after effects bundle is about $500)

What should I do?
Thanks,
-Josh

Well I don't know that much about Macs but I do know that you'll get more bang for your buck if you go with a desktop, in most cases.

Yeah, I am looking at an iMac desktop, sorry, should have specified that
Desired Specs:

4gb DDR3 RAM
1tb serial ATA drive
21in Display
2.5 gHz Intel core i5 processor

DO you think that is enough power for what I am going to use it for? Or should I get a 27in display?

See, I get alot of people from my school saying this, but I really think you are paying mostly for the OS and other things to fill in that 30% more cost (such as iLife applications)

What I REALLY want out of my Mac is garageband, podcaster, screenflow, and final cut pro 10 and all of its sub-applications

If you're into doing some video editing, then yeah, a mac could be a good choice. As you said, good video editing programs are ridiculously high-priced. I personally have never tried doing video editing on a mac, but I have heard that it's quite good (definitely better than moviemakerlol anyway)

David uses a Mac for his video editing and they seem to come out great. I'm sure a Mac desktop could handle video editing, light gaming, and audio recording no problem. So yeah, a Mac is good.

I hear the the iMacs are a pretty good deal and less overpriced than their laptop counterparts.

I have a Toshiba and so far it has worked great, and pretty fairly priced.
