| I do remember they let me play it sometimes. But mostly I watched. Especially when they played Superman. A game that many people born after 1979 don't believe existed. Well, I found a video on YouTube that proves otherwise. Whenever Lois would touch Superman to bring him back after too many kryptonite hits there'd be a dinging noise. Sadly, it was also there whenever Superman rescued Lois. So as he's flying with her it was a constant "ding! ding! ding! ding!" - my brothers would get so annoyed that they'd kill her on purpose by dropping her from a great height - or at least fling her into a pit. Why they never turned the volume down all the way is beyond me. I often play my games now adays without sound as some of them annoy me. The years went by and suddenly Nintendo is on the scene. All my friends were getting Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems and all the accessories, like that darn useless power glove! After much pleading I got one too. It came with Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt. Because I had a tv in my own room it was set up there. You'd think this would be a problem, that I wouldn't do my homework, be up late playing games on a school night. It didn't work that way. No, the one who became addicted was my dad! It would be nearly midnight and he'd be in my room, playing SMB. He wasn't very good at it either and he'd often curse. I lay in bed, pleading, "Daddy! I have SCHOOL TOMORROW! Turn the game OFF!" To which he'd reply "One more level." Finally, mom had enough. She loudly announced one day, "There will be no video games after 10 pm on school nights! And that goes for you too, Jami." Basically, my father was the first one to be put on video game restriction. My favorite game back then was Castlevania. However, I never could beat it. So, bad girl that I was, I saved up my money and bought a Game Genii. My very first cheat device. And yes, I fully admit I've used GameShark - only because I had no one to trade Pokémon with. I had to fill my dex somehow. It basically became my only option. I hate Action Reply - it never worked for me. While I'm not a raging "have to have everything related" fan, I do enjoy the Zelda games. I don't play any Sega, XBox, etc because something about them makes me suffer from motion sickness. That's also the reason I don't own one of those new fangled tvs. But I am considering eventually investing in a Wii so I can get the Wii Fit programs. Plus if they happen to have any Castlevania games for the Wii.... What? I have a thing for vampires - as long as they don't sparkle! |

That was a very interesting story. I especially love the part about your dad cussing at the game. LOL. You have had quite the gaming history.

October 8, 1986. I was a wee lad of three, this is one of my earliest memories, but it remains quite vivid. Back then consoles were not as wide spread as they are now, and although the Nintendo Entertainment System had been released in the United States for a year... when my older brother got one for his 9th birthday he was the proverbial "First kid on the block," with the system. I remember every kid in the neighborhood crowding into our wood panneled basement to huddle around a 19" TV to play Super Mario Brothers. My mother made my brother met me have first go with Luigi... I promptly ran into the second Goomba and died and the controller was passed along. I remember someone found the hidden one up on level 1-1 and Mike, the oldest kid there jumping up and down and shouting "OH OH GET THE MARSHMELLOW!" which became an in-joke for years. I was a part of the Nintendo Generation. For years my brother and I sitting in the basement, me as little brother always being Player 2... through Bubble Bobble, Contra, Ikari Warriors... good times. Great times. |
