Default Sony sued for PSN security breach

Sony Sued for PSN Security Breach - PS3 News at IGN

"We brought this lawsuit on behalf of consumers to learn the full extent of Sony PlayStation Network data security practices and the data loss and to seek a remedy for consumers. We are hopeful that Sony will take this opportunity to learn from the network vulnerabilities, provide a remedy to consumers who entrusted their sensitive data to Sony, and lead the way in data security best practices going forward," said Ira P. Rothken an attorney who filed the class action complaint.

"Sony's breach of its customers' trust is staggering. Sony promised its customers that their information would be kept private. One would think that a large multinational corporation like Sony has strong protective measures in place to prevent the unauthorized disclosure of personal information, including credit card information. Apparently, Sony doesn't," commented J.R. Parker, co-counsel in the case.

The lawsuit seeks monetary compensation for the data loss and "loss of use of the Sony PlayStation Network, credit monitoring, and other relief according to proof."

Thoughts everybody? Do you think they deserve to be sued, or is this going a little to far?

I'm afraid if I communicated all of my opinions on this matter it'd turn into a flaming thread, so I'll just say... no. This is wrong on many many levels.

I don't even know where to start really.

You sue a company.. for getting hacked? I think the whole point is that, nothing is unhackable. The whole point of hacking is to get around that which is meant to be secure, so they're sued for virtually not being secure enough, when infact, the PS3 lasted years longer than both of it's competitors, and when you give Sony your details you're entrusting them to Sony. You agree to the terms and conditions on this basis. It'd be like buying an Xbox360 and then sueing them for it breaking. You buy it with the idea of it not breaking down in mind, then it does, and instead of allowing the company to do it's best to fix the problem, and repair damages, you compound the problem by sueing them? If there's anyone to sue, it'd be the ones who actually did the damage, certainly not the people who provided you with a service and tried to keep your details safe against these impossible odds.

Here's a thought.. do you sue Microsoft when your PC is hacked?

I think that was the hackers plans to begin with, make Sony look bad. They play off the people's ignorance and knew they would blame Sony.

I agree.

However, they deserve some repercussions for waiting a whole week to inform us our info has been comprimised. That's a really, really bad move on their part.

Ok. Fair point I guess. Still completely doesn't justify sueing them though, for the same reasons I've said. Though I'll admit they should have prioritised that above everything
