Which is better? Discuss!

Star Trek, all day every day. The original Star Wars trilogy is great, with Empire Strikes Back being singularly better than anything Star Trek has ever done. The prequels, however, are simply bad movies. Star Trek has some stinkers too, but Episodes 1 - 3 are impressively bad.

One inherent advantage that Star Trek has over Star Wars is that it is at its core a serialized television series, meaning that the writers can do absolutely whatever they want without worrying too much about investing in something that doesn't work. If they felt like doing an episode that centers around the fictional world of Sherlock Holmes - well, alright, let's hit the holodeck!

Which is another thing - Star Trek doesn't take itself seriously. It knows it's a silly show about aliens. Star Wars is so bereft of comedy 99% of the time that when it messes up, it's hard to not feel completely detached from the story.

Star Wars. Is this even still up for debate?

Depends if you're just talking the movies vs the show though, Star Wars is a whole brand of games, books, movies, and so on. Star Wars has a whole universe and mythos that extends beyond the movies, some of it is pretty meh, but some of it is pretty awesome. Star Trek does too, though to a lesser degree.

I haven't bothered to read any of the Star Wars novels, so I'm just basing my opinion off of what I know - the films. I've played some of the games (Dark Forces, KotoR, etc), and the series certainly has a fleshed out universe. But I still prefer a night of Star Trek to a night of Star Wars.

I can't have a fair opinion because I've honestly watched almost no start trek, but the original Star Wars trilogy is a complete classic that can't be beat by too much period. The prequels suck though.

While I like both series they are very different from each other.

Star War is an action movie in a Sci-Fi universe. (Good guys, vs. Bad guys. Save the princess, etc, etc.) Now Star Wars is one of the best Action movies of all time and because it's Sci-Fi and was quite unique it will always be beloved by many people.

Star Trek is a show that is more of a drama and exploring the human condition. While there can be some action in it, that isn't what the show is about. It's about exploring topics like Religion, War, Prejudice, Culture, Etc. Yes both are set in space, but other than that they aren't very similar at all.

Of course the new Star Trek movie is purely action so I guess that only could be compared to Star Wars.

There's no Jar Jar in Star Trek, Star Trek wins by default.
