ok so... how do i play this with other folks online? do i need friend codes? nothing seems to work when i try to get on online play (yes i do have wifi turned on)

Yes, you need friend codes.

You can play without needing friend codes. Just go to the top floor of a pokemon center and talk to the person on the right then select random battle matchup. For more information look here:Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version | Random Matchup. I think you need to be at a certain point in the game to do this though
