Okay, so a lot of people are wondering why this game has been given the slightly tongue-twisting title of 'Super Mario 3D Land'.

Now, I don't care much, but yeah, it's kinda weird. Why would they name it that? To avoid the cliche of 'Super Mario 3D'? Probably, but I have another theory, which may be a bit obvious I know.

What is the tail attached to the title of this game from? The Tanooki/Raccoon Suit, which has been a a main focus of the game for what we have seen so far. What's that suit from? Super Mario 3, right?

For those of you who aren't ahead of me, here you go: Super Mario 3D Land.

It might be one of the things they thought of, like a double meaning or something, but I really don't think it's "THE" reason. I'm leaning more towards that it's because they've already named a few portable mario games Mario Land, this Land is in 3D, therefore it's a 3D Land. Super Mario [in] 3D Land.

Honestly, I think you're just looking too much into this. I think Nintendo just can't come up with original names for their games anymore. :P

Super Mario Land was Marios first handheld adventure,
Super Mario 3D Land is the Marios first 3D handheld adventure.

I actually love the name and I think it's much more creative than just "Super Mario Land 3D" I voted maybe. I am not quite sure on this one.

No I think it means Super Mario Land in 3D (not stereoscopic 3D).

Wouldn't Super Mario Land 3D be a better name then?

No I think that would make it sound like a remake of Super Mario Land in 3D while this is a brand new game.
