| 1) Don't experiment with different karts in Online mode. Choose one you have previously had good races with because having a bad kart online is a death sentence. A kart with good acceleration and speed is great, for instance the Soda Jet. I personally like it with Slick wheels/Red Monster tires and Lakitu but it is personal preference. 2) Practice makes perfect, so practice your drifts and also boost starts for when you fall off (a tap of the A button JUST after you land, it is hard to get at first though). 3) Choose courses you are actually good at. Stay away from courses like Toad Circuit where everyone is good because they are easy, if you are really good then bump up the difficulty level. Other players may struggle and you can take advantage of this. 4) When the race has started get your good boost and on most courses, e.g. Dino Dino Jungle, Rainbow Road, Snes Rainbow Road etc, try to get to the item boxes FIRST. On courses such as Toad Circuit, Wuhu Mountain Loop, Wuhu Island Loop, Mario Circuit 2 etc, where fairly decent shortcuts can be taken early on in the game it is sometimes better to hang back in about 5th or 6th to try and get some mushrooms to perhaps cut a few corners and really jet yourself to the front of the pack. A good thing to do at the start is to also try to get a slipstream, though on Online this can be a little bit more tricky. 5) This seems obvious, but when in first try to elongate your lead. Just because you are in first by a while does not mean you are invincible. Keep racing competitively right to the line. 6) Be very strategic with your items, only lay banana's in regularly used spots and places where people are highly likely to slip on them, e.g. in between the two Thwomps on Snes Rainbow Road. Keep back-up items like shells and banana's in case of attack from the rear. If you can get a star or mushroom in first then keep it. Blue shells are common and if you have protection from them in first then you have effectively won. Use mushrooms on shortcuts and not prematurely, tactically fire your red shells, etc. 7) I know this is a little mean but if you are a close 1st and you know a blue shell is coming then hang back a bit and let someone else overtake you, especially on a dangerous course like Snes Rainbow Road or a course where there is a lot of air, e.g. Alpine Pass. 8) Don't take risks, especially when in first. Keep it simple, for instance in Snes Rainbow Road once I am in first I don't go over any of those little jumps with the two coins above them. They are dangerous and can actually slow you down, just drift around them instead. Be sensible with your glider too, for instance take the shortcut on Mario Circuit 2, Dino Dino Jungle and Mario Circuit but don't do too risky, like some of the Rainbow Road glider sections. 9) This is probably most important of all, and while it doesn't work all the time it is a great method. When you start online you are put in groups of 1000 and 2000 VR's. If you encounter one of these people in your group remember their name, just write it down. The next day if you come back to Online, rather than going straight onto Worldwide play go into your Friends List and scroll down to Opponents. Keep clicking on them to see their win/loss to you. If someone maybe has 5 wins against you and 6 losses then maybe look for someone else, it is good to find somone who has lost 5-0 to you, or 7-2, etc. Someone you have beaten at least more than half the time. Once you have found them, or the name you took down from the other day, join them in a race and you will hopefully be in a lower, easier group. Once you are in then there are 7 other names in that group, possibly more, who you can beat and join next time you are playing online. While they may not always be on and you may just have to resort to playing higher-ranked people (like I did most of the time), sometimes it is nice to join an easy, not so stressful group instead. And if you get a good group, try and stay there for as long as you can. I raced in the same group once for 6 hours in a row. If you get a bad group just leave and try again. No use struggling when you are just going to get frustrated. 10) When finishing the race, don't be cocky. I watched as someone tried to reverse over the line and couldn't before I overtook them. They deserved it as a far as I see it, save the reversing over the line for the times you are miles ahead! 11) Set yourself VR targets. I gave myself the task that I had to earn 1000 VR on weekends and at least 500 VR on weekdays, and I succeeded with my targets every day I set them. 12) Have fun doing it. There is no use in doing something that bores you because getting to 10000 VR is a long process. Oh, and try and collect as many coins as you can too. It will really help when you come to collecting 10000 coins for the gold glider. All in all getting to 10000 VR took me from the 5th of December to the 13th of December, or 9 days. There were some days I didn't nearly play as much as others though. At my peak of play I think I earned 1900 points in one day. My lowest, only a few hundred on my first day. So basically 9 days and 9000 points to get to 10000 VR (because you start on 1000), was an average of 1000 VR a day. Not too bad. And always remeber what you are working towards... ... isn't it beautiful? I have been racing with it for a day or two now and I am in love, it just looks stunning. And guys, I know you probably knew most of these points already but just in case some of you don't know a few then there you go. Most points are just common sense that you should apply to every race. Most of them you could probably use to get 3* in all the Grand Prix's too. Anyway, best of luck with online racing guys! - Conor Aye.

That is really cool I am trying to get that gold car and everything to. Only thing is it will be a while I only play 2 hours a day and my points are 1,400 because I race online for points only 1 hr a day. The other hr I play for 30 mins alone in single player. Then the other 30 mins I play in community races and ghost battles.

This is kinda funny, because this is stuff I already do lol. I always pick rosalina's ice world because I usually always place 1st. But as for tracks like Luigi Raceway & Toad Circuit, it's a different story -__-" I hate noob tracks.

It will be a long time before my VR gets up that much. I always seem to have the worst luck ever because 90% of the time when I'm front-running a race, I get screwed over right towards the end before I can win and end up placing around 4th-8th. It happens too much, so I end up quitting out of frustration with how luck-based the game is. |
