Talking 3D Stop Motion made with the Nintendo 3DS

Hello all! I apologize if this is perceived as spam, but I am hoping that this topic is of legitimate interest to at least a few members here. I purchased my 3DS day 1 not out of interest in the launch games (though the AR games are awesome) but I was primarily motivated by the built-in 3D camera. For the past 2 months I have been creating a new stop motion animation every week with my DSi and posting them on YouTube. Now that I have acquired my lovely 3DS, I shall be continuing this practice, only now in 3D. I am providing a link to the first one, and shall be producing a new one every Sunday night, until the project is either killed by lack of time, or my bipolar.

not bad! the cuts between the shots seems to be harsh on my focus but apart from that it is lovely.

I like the short itself. Very cute.

That said, I think the best plan for you would be to not post any more 3D videos until May. When we have the internet browser (it should be able to access YouTube videos), then we can fully appreciate it.

They're spread too far apart for red/cyan viewing. I just get a double image with the two images really far apart.....

Saw it in cross-eye 3D. Seems pretty interesting. Would be nice to check it out on the 3DS 'net browser.

I have a feeling this may relate to a focus issue. As I mentioned, I'm still learning so I hope to rectify this problem with the next one. I'm used to doing close ups like the approaches.

As far as I know, YouTube support has not been confirmed. While the browser has demonstrated the capability for it on other devices, I wonder whether Nintendo will choose to include it. And if they do, I wonder if it will be capable of playing 3D youtube videos in the same way it exhibits 3D on the device itself.

Note the magic word "should."

Also, this is why I recommended that you hold off until we know whether or not it does play YouTube videos. If it can't, wait for the word on video recording and sharing. We know that's at least a concept they're considering.

While I understand the reason you make this suggestion, I will continue to post a new animation in 3D on YouTube every week for 2 reasons.

1.) I'm not making 3D videos specifically for owners of the 3DS but rather for everyone, and because of how pleased I am with YouTube in the way they support a variety of viewing options. I have been fascinated for years with 3D, and have been wanting to make works in the format for a long time. The reason I brought the video (and will with the future ones I will create) to the attention of this forum is I felt it would be relevant to at least a few people's interests given it was created using the 3DS, and also to hopefully inspire current and future 3DS owners to make 3D animations of their own. I am more than willing to answer questions about the process should anyone find that of interest.

2.) If it does support 3D YouTube when the browser launches, I feel it would be better to have a wealth of content in a compatible format already available at that time.

I apologize for my semi-hostile reply if you make your comment without malice or derision, but I find the concept of my work being pointless unless it's viewed on the 3DS offensive.

I also apologize for my current and future pretension. I went to art college, and have been hardwired to treat my nonsense as serious business.

I'm sorry if I offended you. As a student of operatic voice, I wouldn't enjoy having someone tell me my vocalizing was pointless.

I don't find your work itself pointless, but I do think it would be better to actually post it at the optimum time. While I am interested in your videos after seeing this one (good job, btw), I would have enjoyed it even more actually seeing it on my 3DS with the 3D slider up.

While I understand that YouTube has a 3D viewing option (more power to anyone who tries to work with it), I just never got behind the eye exertion involved with their modes of 3D and feel their application of it is sub-par.

I encourage you to follow your ambition of 3D videos and keep making them, but I would just like you to have it in the place where it would be the most inspiring to potential 3D photo/video/stop-animation artists. Even if it doesn't turn out to be the 3DS due to a lack of YouTube support, I hope you do find that great forum to share your work in.

Newest animation. Shot on the 3DS, and with moderately better focus.

09 - True (3D)

I really am hoping the 3DS will support 3D YouTube, but I have a feeling they might limit 3D video to Netflix, if the upcoming browser supports YouTube at all.

Here's this week's!
12 - Ghost Attack

I usually start shooting for 28 min (approx) at 8pm EST (my first break at work on Sundays), and then shoot for another 58 min (approx) at 10pm (my second break). I sometimes begin the process of 3D credit creation at about 11:02pm (if I'm lucky) and will start music selection around 12:15am. I will edit on my home computer remotely using Team Viewer while until around 1:55am, and resume editing when I get home at 3:15am (usually). The render of Ghost Attack finished at 5:15am according to the date modified information on the YouTube master.

So, if we include the times I can't work on it at all due to work, or travel, then it can take anywhere between 9 and 11 hours. If we remove that time, then between 5 and 7 hours of actual direct work, though up to 90 minutes (sometimes more) of that might just be working on the credits!

Woot! Now this is a section to watch.. i love how the 3DS is so entertaining, you don't even have to be playing games to have fun!

If youtube is unsupported or there is no way to make 3D work on youtube would you allow people to download your videos to their SD cards? (that's assuming we will have video playback)

Given the existence of YouTube downloader addons, I don't think I could prevent it if I even cared to. However, the likelihood of video support like you're talking about is low because it would facilitate viewing pirated movies on the system, and therefore circumvent the need for Netflix subscriptions.

That said, if Nintendo were to make a platform specifically for people to share their own 3D videos (preferably one not requiring being generated by the system as my final video files are rendered in Sony Vegas using files generated by a 3DS) I will be there asap.

What's the point of you advertising your work on a 3DS forum if we can't even view it through our 3DS?

Even though you can't view it on your 3DS, it was shot with a 3DS.

Anyway, I wonder if a 3DS version of the Inchworm animation program (available for DSi) will come to the e-shop. That would make it even easier.

Will Youtube ever add support for the 3DS browser so we can choose the 3DS as an output device for 3D-Videos like the modes for glasses or 3D TVs? I mean would it be easy to do or would it need to have the 3DS an interface for that?

Hey, I've noticed all those rows of boxes and metal filing cabinets, is that where you work?

Not bad stop motion by the way!

Besides, I live in the long shot hope that we will be able to, but in the likely chance we won't be able to, as previously mentioned, it was shot on a 3DS and I hope to encourage other 3DS owners to create 3D stop motion themselves! Each of these animations, from first shot (or in the case of the Ghost Trilogy, first new shot) to final cut, and uploading to YouTube, were finished in less than 24 hours! (And that's with the interruptions provided by having to do my job.)

While it would actually make it more difficult to do the type an animation I do, the program intrigues me. I bought it on my DSi with the intention of transferring it (if I am able to) to my 3DS when the update comes. I am very much looking forward to the promised version of flipnote for the 3DS, and I am wondering whether that will be in 2D or 3D.

Personally, if the 3DS supports 3D YouTube (and that's a big IF), it seems to me that the currently available option of 3D TV or Monitor: Side by Side would be the one used.

Thank you, and yes, that is the room where we keep the reserve materials at the library I work at. I shoot the animations during my break time on Sunday nights.

Didn't post last week's animation here because it was shot on my DSi, using inchworm animation.
Shame (but not unexpected) that the browser doesn't support YouTube. Here's hoping for a 3D enabled YouTube app!

Anyway, this week's animation!

I always enjoy watching your stuff. I have Inchworm too, but haven't done anything with it yet. I'd like to think that Art Clokey is smiling at you from the Great Beyond.

Thanks!
I'll admit though, the artists who inspire me most (currently) are Hideaki Anno, Takena Nagao, and various pixilation works.

And here is this week's animation. Probably one of the most exhausting I've had to shoot.
Last week's wasn't posted due to it being made in Inchworm on the DSi, and therefore not relevant to the 3DS.

It's been 2 weeks since I lasted posted a video even though I claim they're "weekly" but I have a good excuse; last week's animation was shot in Inchworm on a DSi, and therefore irrelevant when it comes to the 3DS. So...
23 - Burst

Possibly my favorite. Or at least it is for the next 20 minutes. It took 2 bloody days to shoot!

I watched your first one, very kinky. Good work on these videos btw, you say you have bipolar yet I bet it takes a lot of patience to do it. I know i wouldn't have that patience.

You know, I never thought of it like that, but I guess it could be interpreted that way.

Anyway, a lot of creative people have it (hell, probably at least half the people I went to college with did), one of the most famous people who probably had it (though it went undiagnosed at the time due to a limited understanding of psychology) is Vincent van Gogh. Not to compare my nonsense to his brilliance, of course, just our brain soup. Also, I'm medicated, he wasn't.

Yay! Bipolar buddies!
The Pink Cat is probably my favorite recurring character, I was even tempted to make a web comic solely dedicated to her (his?) adventures, but I realized that'd be something that I'd quickly lose interest in, as I would probably run out of stories soon after I started it! Though making it in 3D would be a mildly tempting challenge... Anyway, if you visit my YouTube channel, there are several 2D videos as well! Every time s/he appears a new talent or power seems to be gained...

I know, I'm hoping and praying that Nintendo will release a Youtube app that supports 3D videos. If you have them, (though it saddens me to say it) I recommend using 3D glasses. That's how I show them to my co-workers.

If Nintendo ever makes it possible for me distribute 3D videos in a way that can be viewed on the 3DS, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will (preferably for free. I'm not in this to make money, I have a job. I just want to hopefully amuse and inspire others to make there own animations with the 3DS.)

*hits the subscribe button* I knew I was forgetting something.
*suddenly notices the 3d thingy on the video, and clicks on it* Oh... I never knew that it can turn off the 3d....
This seems interesting, maybe I should try making one.. (with my dad's regular camera or a 3ds?..Never mind I'll just wait till I get my own 3ds so I won't have to borrow his camera all the time...) Thanks for inspiring me!

Glad to know I inspired someone!
My recommendation though, if you can get your father to let you use his camera (or if you have a DSi, or even a cellphone camera!), practice with that first. Making the videos in 3D adds some steps to the process, so it's better to learn how to do it with out the added difficulty. If you need any advice or help, I'm more than willing to provide what I can.

That would be nice. At least Inchworm works on it, though I'm hoping against hope for a 3DS specific version of it.

Last week's animation was another 2D one. Here's #26
26 - U.S. Camel Corps(e)

I decided I'm gonna do the 1 a week thing for a year, and then do one a month, spending more time on each one. So, half way point, yay?

Thanks! He had to die because while I was animating, I accidentally stepped on him, and need to explain the missing leg, and had 15 minutes left to shoot it.

No. Inchworm animation only does 2D animations. a few of my weekly animations have been made in Inchworm, but I haven't been posting those here as I made those on my DSi, not my 3DS.

Good job with the videos, dadaposuer, but I'm moving this to "The Studio".

That's the section where members show-off their creative work.

Keep making these!

Thanks. I was debating requesting this, because it now allows me to post the ones made in my DSi without feeling guilt of it not being 3DS related, lol.
EDIT====
DSi nonsense
01 - Pink Play-doh
02 - What Have I Got In My Pockets Theater: Part 1
03 - What Was Left In The Lost And Found Theater: Part 2 (here is where they develop rudimentary plots)
04 - Peeps
05 - Feed A Pony
06 - Dust
07 - The Pink Cat Comes Back
17 - Short Subject: Copyright Infringement
20 - Short Subject: SSL
22 - Remote Input Disabled
25 - Short Subject: Not Again

Added after 14 Hours 31 minutes:

Now that last week's animation is out of the way, prepare for this week's!
30 - The Return
The end of the Pink Cat's adventure with the Doctor.

Huh, so if I try to reply to a thread, and mine is the most recent post, then automatically adds the new post as an edit onto the previous one.

I am. I'm hoping it also signifies 3D youtube support to facilitate sharing the promised video. If it doesn't, I hope it becomes possible to use whatever method of video sharing they may or may not implement to share 3D videos not made in that software.

Depends on the animation. Some were only approx 100 -150 pictures, vs. 1 was approx 730 pictures.

Not sure if you've heard... but there's going to be an official update to Nintendo 3DS Camera for Stop-motion animation.

That might be of interest to you.

I did hear about this. I'm going to test it out when it comes out, but I have a feeling it won't give me as much control as I like to have when doing any kind of animation.

Yes. All animations marked as having come from the 3DS were shot in the 3DS camera app. Then, I put the MPO files on my computer, and edited them together in Sony Vegas. The credits and titles are done by using StereoPhoto Maker to convert certain MPO files to side by side JPG images, the text is added to those in Gimp Portable, and then the resulting images are converted back to MPO format, and also loaded into Sony Vegas.

Thanks for the kind words. I've been trying so experiments lately to see how I might do credits on animations compiled solely in the 3DS. The one nice possibility if it turns out the videos have a resolution of 400 by 240 is at least I'll be able to see everything in the shot, rather than having to guesstimate where everything is, but I am hoping for higher resolution than that.

Also...

So, with the addition of 3D video recording/playback, and the current lack of YouTube on the 3DS, I'm working on converting all my 3D animations to a format that will play on the system. Here's the 3DS version. On my system, it shows up under 1/1 1900. It's currently 20 frames a second, but I will be tweaking things as I go, to see what I can do.

Thanks. I think I also might be able to have another 5 or so animations up in 3DS format tonight, plus I'm re-encoding #43 to 30FPS. I'm looking into editing video meta data to hopefully let me set the order they are supposed to be in, because they don't order themselves by file name, but I believe file creation date.
==EDIT==
8 more animations converted and uploaded, see the first post for links.

I gave the 3DS stop motion software another shot, after fixing my ghosting problem. Also, because it was faster mostly. I still prefer the resolution and editing control of working with the MPO files though.

Very cool. My computer is being a bit laggy right now since it is rendering, but it seemed pretty smoothly done. I look forward to seeing a more ambitious project.

49 - Playmates
I just realized I haven't put up the 3DS version of the last one yet! Plus I have 16 days to make 3 more animations, lol. Can I make it? I hope so!
