Default Iwata 'wanted Christmas release' for 3DS

source: News: Iwata 'wanted Christmas release' for 3DS - ComputerAndVideoGames.com

Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata wanted a Christmas 2010 launch for the Nintendo 3DS, but was forced to "delay" the release because of production worries.

That's according to MF Global FXA Securities analyst Jay Defibaugh, who's claimed that Iwata told analysts his company was originally shooting for a date sometime this year for the handheld.

Speaking after Nintendo's big press conference this morning, the analyst called the announced February Japan data a "worst-case scenario" for the firm.

Defibaugh went on to say he had hoped for a 2010 launch and a lower 20,000 ($240) price point versus the 25,000 ($299) Nintendo revealed.

In similar worries, analyst Colin Sebastian predicted that the later than expected release will cause supply constraints in the West.

I think that Nintendo also delayed the release because they want the 3DS to have a HUGE 3rd party support launch, and they probably want to give 3rd party developers time to get some games ready for launch.

I think the production issues are part of the reason for the delay. They want to make sure they have enough to supply the demand unlike they did with the Wii.

And as my fellow Canadian Igloo dweller Ashanmaril states, it will give 3rd parties more time, though also for Nintendo to do more conversions of the Gameboy and Gameboy color titles for the 3DS.

Releasing the 3DS with a $299.99 price point (or even close to it) with a small library of 3D titles would hurt 3DS's sales, waiting untill they have hundreds of games between the Gameboy titles, Gameboy color titles, First and third party titles all for 3DS...they know what their doing.

If they push the release into a later date, expect more supply.

It would also give the DS its last Christmas to rake in the cash instead of the DS sitting in stock rooms around the world as soon as the 3DS is release.

Someone said somewhere on here or somewhere else that ninty will prob keep the DS going for the younger audience and the 3DS will be for adults which makes perfect sense to me! I bet Ninty will announce a new DS in E3 in 2011 at a budget price of under €100 like they did with the SNES if i rememmber right or was that another system thay had? Sony did that with the PS1 didnt they?

Nintendo released the SNES 101 and Donkey Kong Country to partly compensate for the N64's delays, and partly follow a little tradition that console manufacturers had then.
