Finally, some place that I can post random thoughts on this game, great job Panini this is quite the hype-boost.

PARA BIDDYBUDS!!

The time I've spent with the game has been great, the controls are real solid. 18 days to go!

I'm not sure if I'll get this game at release. I realized my economy is ****tier than ever and it's nearly christmas, gotta buy lots of gifts and crap. I might get this after christmas instead, when my economy is more stable... or never. I'll prioritize MK7 above this.

Aww that's to bad. I barely spend money, only when a game comes out that I really want, so usually I have enough. On multiple occasions my dad has bought me my games though.

Yea, it may not be the hardest game ever made, but that's one thing mario games have always done. Just be really happy and really colorful.

Easy or not, the game play looks fun. But I heard the game gets tricky on the bonus worlds.

I tend to do Official Threads near release time. At least that way, my threads have a bit more substance, and won't be sitting around doing nothing until release.

Very true.

This is the very reason I'm also getting Mario Kart 7.

I've read a number of impressions,
Spoiler!
So there is some level of difficulty to be found in the game.

I think the theme tune has grown on me.

I like how you can get StreetPass bonuses from people who don't have the game.

Love that OP.

Anyway, I'm totally excited for this game - I need some quality stuff to play on my 3DS. I'm wondering if I should save this for Christmas, or just give in and buy it this month.

If you have the money, then I would just say to get it now because you might be busy playing Mario Kart and other games then.

Alright, I put both parts of Iwata Asks under Miscellaneous. They're worth a good read, as they always are.

I also added a link to the official website, where most of the graphics and and descriptions are derived from. It should prove to be a helpful compliment to this OT. A couple of things that I left out include the firmware update that comes with the game. This update apparently adds some pretty neat Friends List features, but I don't have any pictures to add and I felt it wasn't needed. I also left out the Gamestop pre-order bonuses. The US gets a key-chain while Canada gets some pins. I may add those later.

Is anything else missing? I might add reviews.

If you're going to add those you may as well add the Australian pre-order bonus from EB Games too, which is a Tanooki hat.

I'll probably do it once I get some high quality pictures. I only have space for one image left, so I'll have to group up everything. Thanks for informing me!

I'll probably release another set. I'd rather not share any of my image sharing accounts, so I'll just release them ten at a time. It's fun anyway.

I made a super mario 3d land avvy a few days ago when I was experimenting with gimp:

I'm actually looking forward to this game. I usually just get Mario games after they've released but I've pre-ordered this one.

At least you guys get little gimmicks. Well, I guess I can't complain. In Japan, if you preserve a game, you get 500-1000円 (About $7-$13USD) off the price of the game, so I guess I technically get a better deal.

In Japan, yes. If it didn't outsell Battlefield 3 there then something would be wrong.

As for other regions, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Super Mario 3D Land is unlikely to beat Battlefield 3 in terms of first-week sales, although it's got a fairly good chance of achieving higher lifetime sales, especially given the longevity of Nintendo titles on the market. Just look at New Super Mario Bros and Mario Kart DS.

It isn't surprising that Mario Kart has crazy sales on both the Wii and DS because Mario Kart is the kind of game that you just can't put down once you start playing it.

Yet, I'm sure that Super Mario 3D Land is going to have a great sales.

And EDGE tends to be pretty rough with handheld reviews too. The highest they've given a handheld was 9/10.

Yea, and gamespot isn't exactly always the most generous for reviews either, and they also gave 8. Almost all of the rest were 9+.

Guys I found a vid showing off 17 minutes of special world stages, I like the remix version of that stage with the 8 bit styled platforms.

From Super Mario 3D Land Review - Nintendo 3DS Review at IGN:

Quote:
As the first 3DS title to actually use 3D as an integral part of the gameplay experience, 3D Land's platforming relies heavily on the precision leant by the 3D effect. You can adjust it with a simple touch of the D-pad to either pop out or sink in more, depending on which suits the area best or just which you prefer at the moment. You can play without 3D enabled, but it makes things considerably more difficult and frustrating - this game was designed to be played in 3D, and you can't fully experience it otherwise.

Certain parts of 3D Land, during which a small 3D symbol appears on the top screen, you'll find near impossible to pull off without activating the 3D. By relying on 3D as an important mechanic rather than a second thought to enhance the visuals, the developers achieved the most effective 3D I've ever seen in any medium, as well as the most brilliant use of it. From the clever platforming puzzles to the creative level design, every aspect of the game is heightened by the masterful use of an effect that up until now has essentially only been used as an optional visual boost. As Mario jumps off a bouncy mushroom and soars out of your screen - or pulls off a daring jump onto a tiny platform to nab a secret or hidden medal - it becomes apparent that 3D Land represents the kind of experience the 3DS was always meant for.
This was my favorite part of the review.

Sweet. Nice to see some of the stages with some higher difficulty levels.

That almost makes me want to play it without 3d just to make it that much more challenging, but I'll wait to do that until my second run of the game.

I heard the extra 8 worlds are challenging enough.

I think the first 8 are for casuals to feel accomplished when they finish them, and the extra 8 are for more dedicated gamers to strive for.

I like to think the first 8 is the tutorial, and real games begins after that.

Seems a bit long to be a tutorial (i know you're just saying you see it that way), aren't the 8 worlds that you unlock considered 'bonus' levels? I just don't like how Nintendo is making their games easier for the sake of casual gamers.

They're just appealing to as wide an audience as possible, there's still a good challenge to be had. And even so, lower difficulty doesn't necessarily detract from fun completely, maybe the first 8 worlds won't be such a drag.

Name's kind of grown on me. But I don't think SL3DL ever would though, lol.

Many of the levels in the 8 special worlds are completely new styled levels with cranked up difficulty and the same themes as the original worlds. A lot of the levels are actually longer in length as well and some are "time attack/arcade" styled where you start with 30 seconds and have to collect like 10 sec time bonuses the whole stage. Of course there are stages that are pretty much just remixes of other stages but they too seem different.

For example of one of the remix stages:
Spoiler!

So in a way, it's pretty much two adventures in one.

So why are there so many Tanooki tails all over the place? Goombas have them, Bowser has one, is that part of the story some how?

A bad storm blew all the leaves off the Tanooki tree and across the Mushroom Kingdom.

No. The only thing that somewhat resembles Multi player is the Street Pass features.

I don't think the idea is to make games easier - Rather playable for everyone. And yes, there is a difference, ahah. I mean, the Invincibility Leaf and P-Wing are there to get past stages you can't figure out, but they're optional power-ups - Meaning the player must choose to use them.

As for the special levels, I don't consider them "bonus" levels considering they're very much necessary towards completion of this game. You could argue that they could have been made available from the start for players who want to jump directly to the challenge, but a lot of games tend to lock off difficult areas. I don't think this is any different.

A highly recommend goofing around by rolling all over the place, just run and continuously pressing L/R. It's good fun especially during one of those BoomBoom Airship Bosses.

Now, if you clear the game without dying 5 times in a level, the stars will be rainbow-colored. So, in other words, if you want rainbow stars: if you die five times in a level, turn off your 3DS.

My avatar is now officially TANOOKIFIED! Changed the Link pose and stuff though so I could make it work. A nice job in MS Paint if I don't say so myself.

All righty then, no prob.

I tried watching the IGN vid review, but there was just too much new footage and I didn't want to spoil myself.

But Tanooki Luigi does look pretty cool.

Picked up my copy before work, should be done here in a half hour. Can't wait to get home and play it!

Also, anyone notice that the picture of the keychain when it was announced looked like a 3mad D keychain, but the actual thing is more 2D? Just thought it was ironic, considering the game its for xD

I'll hopefully be purchasing my copy of the game tomorrow. I'm very excited. I've been looking forward to this game ever since they revealed just four pictures of it, and it's hard to believe I'm just a day away from owning it.

For anyone still curious about the friend list update, basically you get a "Join Game" function that can't be used as of yet, and the list re-organizes itself to show who is online first (it shuffles them towards the front). It's also a lot less of a hassle to scroll through your friends.

Just finished the main game (first 8 worlds) in about six hours... Gotta say I loved it, and I'm excited to play the other 8. This game is addictive as hell. Took me three sittings.

Spoiler!

Anyway, excited to play the rest. Best 3DS game so far, best 3D effect, perfect controls, level design, etc.

Some of them are the same but altered in some form, and others are entirely new areas. I'm also on the new set of worlds. They're actually harder than the original ones.

Well, it wasn't a pre-order bonus, but at Future Shop, if you were one of the first to buy, you got this Mario figure (thought it was gonna be a keychain, but it was free so whatever).

I'll try and edit this post with a picture later.

No, some are the same, but some are altered and all have harder difficulty.

EDIT: Here's what I got from Future Shop

Just finished World S3, played the game 9+ hours in two days... This game is incredible. I love it.

Well, it's a quarter to midnight here, so I guess I should start studying for my exam.

I got it sunday and sorry to say, but even with it in my 3ds and the update installed, I chose to watch football over playing it...HUGE MISTAKE. When I finally picked it up I couldn't stop. I felt like I was five years old again playing the original on NES and I'm half afraid to admit it, but I have a constant ear-to-ear grin on my face the whole time.

I brought it with me a couple times. But I always do that if I know I'll be in there for a while. I even have a charger in the bathroom just in case.

That has to be by far the best Bowser battle in any Mario game. Bowser is actually cool again, and not like the comedy act he has played in some recent games.

Which Bowser battle exactly?

Actually that's a dumb question, they were all pretty amazing.

I think this is the first time I've experienced the dread of waiting for a game everyone else has. Before I got into the 3DS I knew the dates of games that were coming out, just wasn't aware of other countrie's. Street Fighter I got at 3DS launch so I was more stressed about not having the 3DS, wasn't overly excited for the game either. OoT 3D EB games had a week early, but I didn't get it on the day it was out since I was on holiday and was keeping busy. Right now I'm doing nothing, and everyone has the game and are having a great time. I'll feel the same with SS.

Glad I won't experience this with MK7.

Finally beat S8-6 and got my four profile stars. Just have to beat every level again with Luigi to get the last star along with the extra crown level!

I really loved this Bowser battle too. It surprised me in how amazing and exciting it was. The music is great and sets the mood perfectly. The only thing I don't like is that you don't actually fight him, you just run. But I still loved it.

I feel so sorry for you man.
Trust us, it's worth the wait.
Once you play it, you forget that you had to wait a long time. xD

YES!

Finally beat the last level with a pretty good time too. The level seems a lot more difficult to speed through with Luigi because of his physics, so I tend to take my time with him on this stage. The hardest portion of this stage for me is the second one.

Yeah, and I guess I could have shaved off a few seconds by going to the pole directly rather than going for a gold flag.

This game doesn't need to be hard to be fun. The level design, different mechanics, enemy placement is a blast despite being a breeze. I'm only on World 5 now, so that could change.

The variety in these levels blow my mind, it's almost every level that I meet a new mechanic, twist, or at least a surprise. Love it.

I have tries to grab the stupid third star coin in the last level of the nonspecial world 150 times. Its pissing me off. Couldnt Nintendo have put their checkpoint flags in better places?

I have totally given up this coin. Good job.

I beat the game a couple of days ago. To be honest, I was surprised Nintendo went with the whole "hard final level" thing again, mind you it wasn't nearly as hard as "The Perfect Run".

If by The Perfect Run you mean getting the shiny stars on the profile then yes that is way harder than the last level. I am in the middle of it now. All I have to do now is play all the levels with Luigi.

By "The Perfect Run", he means the crazy hard final level in SMG2.

Oh. My. God. Special 8-CROWN is killing me ;-; I have lost like 25+ Lives in that place alone, even with the Tanooki Suit.

Yes doing so will get 1 out of the five stars you need to 100%.

I'll say yes too. You'll need to beat with both Brothers on each Level, and get the Gold Flag too (not with both, just 1 will do).

Should I 100% with Mario and then do it all again with Luigi? Do I do it on the same save file? If so do I need to pick up Star Coins I already have with Luigi?

I wasn't surprised Nintendo did a challenging final level again. Sems like a tradition now. I agree, though, The Perfect Run was WAY harder than Special 8-Crown. Sometimes I wonder how the heck I was even able to beat The Perfect Run.

You don't have to get the Star Coins nor the Gold Flag (unless you don't have it) again, just beat the level again with Luigi.
