Post Mario Kart 7:A Guide for 3-Stars

A lot of people are asking how to get 3 Stars for 150cc and Mirror. For those who are having a hard time getting three stars, read this guide.

If you want some videos, try

Mario Kart 7 - Perfect 3-Stars Rank Tip Guide (Nintendo 3DS)

Here are some tips that always work for me.

1.Stay in First. This is the most basic factor for a 3 Star Rank. If you don't win for one race, you automatically don't get three stars

2.Balance Drifting with Acceleration. You would want to drift for tight corners but don't overdo it for the whole race course because when you drift, you actually slow down, but lose speed slower than just turning.Remember never to drift unneccessarily.

3.Collect Coins. While these coins aren't actually a factor for three-stars, they might as well be. These coins increase your max speed once you collect 10 of them.

4.Practise your boosts. Always boost at the start of the race. Also, don't use drift if you think you can't do at least a mini-turbo. It will slow you down.

5.Offense and Defense. When in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth(If you ever drop down there), just use as many items as you can. Kill of as many opponents as you can and strive to be back in first. For Second, third and fourth, use a combination of these two, but still remember your goal to be no.1. For pole Position Racers, use Defensive strategies, but go on the offensive if you know it is the right time to.

6.Use Items Strategically. When in first place, you got to utilize each item and use them carefully. An item can be a factor between success and failure. If you get the Mushroom item, save it instead of using it for shortcuts. If a blue shell gets to you, with the correct timing, you can evade it. If you can't, you can still use the Mushroom to make a comeback. Also, the other items you get in 1st might be weak, but they are more than enough to defend yourself from common threats.

7. Don't Take Risks. When you are in First Place, don't take shortcuts that may cause you to fall off the track. For example, when in first place, I will not take those ramps from the SNES Rainbow Road. Those can slow you down, or speed you up and make you fall off the track.

8. Don't practice for Mirror 150cc. Mirror Mode is a flipped version of a track. That means all right turns will be left, and vice versa. It means that your memory will actually work against you in Mirror Mode. Instincts vs Map, you see, and usually Instincts will win, especially since you have already practiced a particular track loads of times(50cc,100cc,150cc,Time Trails) So, hence the need NOT to practise a track so that you won't turn right when you should turn left.

9.Play with good AND familliar karts. You should play with only good and familliar karts. Some combinations may work for some but not for others. Practise using the kart in 50cc first and get a grip for it. Have experience using it before racing with it in 150cc. You should choose Toad Circuit for Practice as it conbines many things together. Dirt, hang gliders, Ramps, almost everything you need is in this track.

10.Luck. Even if you follow of these tips, you will still need luck on your side.
Good Luck:No Blue Shells, just banana slips and red shells.
Bad Luck:Two Blue Shells and a walloping with a Tanooki Tail
Really Bad Luck:Five Blue Shells, Fire Flowers, Red Shells, and Bloopers.
If you don't have luck, you have little chance of winning.

Good Luck with the tips that I gave you. Comment pls!

Drifting does not slow you down. I think it's unfortunate that they made *** so easy in this game - if you get 40 points you're guaranteed two stars; stay in first for the majority of each race and it's a piece of cake.

Mirror Special Cup is by far the worst. I did the rest of Mirror easily, but this one's giving me loads of trouble!

The only Cup I had trouble with, was the Mirror Leaf Cup, all thanks to Daisy Cruiser. I don't know what it is about that track, but for some reason the CPU players are twice as annoying and evil. Other than that, getting 3 stars on everything for me wasn't really hard.

I'll offer a tip I used to help get me 3 stars. Whenever you're in first place, keep a careful watch on the leader board for a blue shell. As soon as you see a CPU get one, slow down and let the CPU behind you move up to first place. Once they take the hit, then you can reclaim your first place spot. Of course you only have to do this if it's a close race. If you have a huge lead over everyone else then you can afford to take a hit. The advantage of this move is great. I wouldn't have ever completed mirror mode with 3 stars had I not done this. Unlike online opponents who use blue shells immediately, CPU's usually take a few seconds before they launch the blue shell, so that gives you a few precious seconds to slow down and let the CPU behind you take first and the hit.

Yeah, I left out some tips... sorry about that. Anyway, I just got 3 Stars for EVERY course just by summarizing all this! These set of tips do work. And I believe that drifting DOES slow you down, but only by a bit, as opposed to turning, which slows you down A LOT. Think of Drifting as a speed retainer sort of that will lose speed slower that turning. Isn't that what drifting is for, speeding around tight corners faster than regular turning. If the people at Nintendo did not put a 'slow down slowly' function on Drifting, we would be drifting just about everywhere.

These tips suck.
Most are not even true.
Most of them everyone knows.
"Finish first"
"Keep a shell"
"Try to get to 1st"
I commend you for your effort put into this, sadly, it won't be useful imo.

The blue shells seem to be so much more conveniently timed and frequent for the computer racers in this game. If I've led for the majority of the race, I am nearly guaranteed to get blasted with less than half a lap to go. Plus, on 150cc and mirror, the rest of the pack is typically bunched very closely together so one hit can take you from 1st to 6th easily. I was just playing a moment ago on 150cc shell cup. I won the first three races easily, but on Luigi Mansion I was blue shelled in the swampy part at the end of the 3rd lap. I went from first to 6th and finished 5th by passing one racer. At 34 points I tied for first and got one star. The blue shells are 100x more aggravating and lucky for the computer in this game above any previous one in the series.

I just won 3 stars on mirrored cup 150cc 100cc and 50cc 50cc peace of cake, 100cc peace of cake, 150cc hard, mirrored super hard and drifting is not slow if you know how to use it and blue shells are easy if you look at the bottom screen just as thay get the ?box and you see a blue shell let the guy behind you pass an boom... first just be careful if your at the finish and 3/3 just go i have got in last because i let the other guy pass me.

Just got my 3-star rank about 20 min ago. I started holding shells and banana peels behind me. Never done that in MK before. Also, I found a kart/character combo with great stats on everything except handling. Mirror Special was my nemesis. Been trying that one for a week or more now.

Most of these are true, but you must know that, in my opinion, it depends on the game card, I can get 36 points and get 3 stars somehow! Also, being a very good racer in time trials and holding a time trials world record, I must say that drifting does slow you down, but it is not as bad as turning regularly, the less you turn regularly, the better you will do
