Default Blue Shell |OT| of DAMN YOU, BLUE SHELL!!!!!

ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: Too many threads about Blue Shells. Merge a bunch and call it an OT. Only talk about the blue shell in here. Blah.

I rely hate those blue shells!

Almost every time im about to reach the goal (3/3 lap)
I get it by a blue shell.

It's reddicilous that one single blue shell can screw up an otherwise perfect race.

Also you can only get the blue shell if you are far behind like 5th place or further. In other words, it won't help you since you are too far behind anyways because it only hits the 1th place racer instead of the guy in front of you.

I think the blue shells should get completely removed from the MK series.

What do you guys think?

BTW, i noticed that my username is spelled wrong. Is there anyway i can change it?

Oh look! Another blue shell hater.
Don't we already have a big thread about this somewhere?

Those guys need their own forum banner or symbol next to their name.

They are annoying but there are a few tricks to help you lessen their impact.

1. If it's a close race and second place is not that far behind. As soon as you notice someone has a blueshell slam on the brakes and let them take over first place. (Then take the lead back after they get killed.)

2. If you are far ahead of anyone just keep racing. Of course try not to put yourself in too dangerous of situations. (Turning on a hill that has an OB section that you could slide into. Stop and wait half a second if you need to get hit, but reduce danger.)

I'm sure others have tips as well.

This reminds me of a time when I got hit by a blue shell...

I was halfway through the last lap, and I was in first place. All of a sudden, I get hit by a blue shell.
The blue shell knocks me into a pit.
And I'm hit by another shell when I get out of the pit.

I finished that race in 8th place. :/

...You're right, the blue shell is terrible, but after all Mario Kart IS a game of chance.

The key is to always keep an eye on the lower screen and pay close attention when someone gets a blue shell. Unless you're about to finish the race, get into second place immediately before they use it. If you aren't able to do that, just get as close to the second place racer as possible so that they'll get caught in the explosion as well.

If you think that the blue shell is bad, it doesn't even compare to the worst item in Mario Kart history: The lightning cloud from MK Wii.

The real trick is: do most of the race in 2nd place. Keep behind that first place guy and try to over take him about half way through the last lap. I've noticed that blue shells usually show up when one person has been I first for too long or when you are too far ahead of anyone.
Using this information you can pretty much finish every race without ever getting hit by a blue shell.

Have you ever used a blue shell while in first place? Don't.

In all honesty, I'm slowly starting to adjust to Spiny Shells. Don't get me wrong, though, I still hate 'em. Most of the time you will get hit by them, but at least there are ways of avoiding them as hard as they may be. Alongside them, there's other strategic ways of avoiding the damn things like droppin' out of second if you're close enough. I've been so far ahead at times that I've been attacked by them and still didn't see anybody on the screen. They suck, but they're here to stay, so get used to them.

I hate being hit by blue shells, but I love using them!

However, the blue shells are a part of Mario Kart. The ability to suddenly change the outcome of a race just makes it more fun. That's my opinion!

As much as I hate the Blue Shells, it would be bad without them because in their own sick way, they do bring some kind of balance to the game. Someone in 1st place could so easily just keep the lead and get further and further in front, but not because they're skilled and better at it, but because everyone else is being held back too much by being attacked constantly by items. The Blue Shell is there to stop that, so you (or anyone else) has a chance at taking the lead.

As I've said before, blue shells are the wildcard; and that's what Mario kart is all about.

Though if you're not far ahead and you get hit right before the finish line then it isn't so fair.

Yeah, it's unfair and annoying as hell when crap like that happens. They really shouldn't occur when it's that close towards the end of a race.

blue shells, while annoying, aren't even close to how aggravating the fireballs are. damn cp hit me four times in a row, and i finished with 6 coins instead of 10. that's annoying. it doesn't help them get ahead, it just makes you loose your coins.

In Daisy's Cruise I was in 1st place when a blue shell appeared, I accidentally fell into the flooded bottom of the ship and the blue shell then did a small spin and continued forward for another lap because it missed me xD Good thing it was the final lap!

"I used to be in first place like you, but then I took a blue shell to the kart." There.

I have accepted the blue shell but i still think that it shouldnt appear in the last lap. The noob had two laps and some lucky shells to go to atleast one of the first places.

After 35 hours of Mario Kart I can now safely conclude that the Blue Shells are a gamebreaking design flaw that doesn't bring balance, but just makes the outcome of races purely random.

It's a gameplay mechanism Nintendo should have left out of the game. After so many iterations they should have known it is ****, but Nintendo never learn or improve their games. They just lazily re-release the same games over and over and leave all the flaws in.

Here's a good way to avoid them if you're too far ahead to drop out of first: Fall off the edge of the track. Of course, you need to be in a place where you CAN fall off the edge for this to work.

Even when I hate blue shells, at least they are not that cheap as they are in Mario Kart Wii, blue shells now can hit other player and still you can avoid them with a mushroom since they are now easier to get when you are in 1st place, plus, Mario Karts are all about cheating and luck, not only skill.

As unrealistic as this might sound, the only times I avoided blue shells were in MK7, and both of them was while gliding. o-o

I wish Blue Shells were alive so I could torture them to death. I hate them >.<

I don't know about ya'll, but they actually ruin my MK7 experience. It just makes the outcome completely unfair and random, and doesn't even really help the last place person who used it. It's pointless.

One question for you guys who own it. Is the shell as annoying and frequently appearing as in MKWii? God I hated that so much. Not a big deal in, say, DD, and DS slightly..

There is a way you can dodge the blue shell. But you will need the mushroom boost. Heres how it works. right when the blue shell is hovering above you, you use the mushroom boost. You will dash right out of the blue shells range and it will miss you. Give that a try (:

MKWii is probably the most chaotic MK game there is.

Blue Shells everywhere.

Sadly, blue shells aren't the only ungodly thing in MKWii.
"POW" Blocks and lightning stirkes accure every minute or so.
Everytime that happens you loose your groove.

DD is the best MK game there is. The courses are great and item boxes don't
appear that often and you rearly get hit by a blue shell.
It was perfect!

I hope Nintendo get their **** together with with the Wii U version.

If blue shells worked like they did in Mario Kart 64, then I would have much less of a problem with them. I'm constantly getting hit, even when I'm not in first (I just recently got hit by one...in sixth place!!!). In Mario Kart 64, the blue shell would hit everybody ahead of the user, not just first place. Plus it could hit walls and fall into bottomless pits, meaning that there actually was a way to avoid them, I'm not sure if you could use another shell to block it though...

Sorry if this is review but you can, if timed right, dodge a blue shell if you have a boost. When you see it spinning above you, just hit that left rear button like it were your second free life. I would consider it a second life.

In Mario Kart 64 if you hold a blue shell in your back (what is now impossible) you cannot be hit by any other shell that follows you and it keeps there all the race if you hold it.

It doesn't stick out as much as blue. And there is no way to avoid it and stay in the lead. Many a time I have crossed the finish line with 7 coins because of lightning.

I dislike them because they punish players for doing good.
I personally wish the item was toggle-able, or removed for future Mario Kart games.

I don't mind Blue Shells, it's when they come after/before a red shell, lightning and a blooper that really gets me. But as has been said, MK is very much a game of chance

Go back and play Mario Kart Wii. You only get one or two per race in MK7, as opposed to one or two per lap.

yeah i hate them too but they are just a part of the game. i just hate them because it seems on 150CC that they wait until you are just before the finish line and hit you with them. Blah!

I've been racing in 150CC in 1P Mode today, and the most amazing thing just occurred!
While on Rainbow Road, Wiggler got a blue shell within the first part of the track, while I was in first place.
I maintained first place throughout the entire race, and not once did Wiggler ever even use the blue shell!

When a blue shell is above you, and stops spinning to prepare to drop, use a mushroom.

Why is everyone so surprised that you can dodge Blue Shells with a Mushroom? It's an ancient technique, and was possible in Wii as well. In fact, the only difference between 3DS and Wii is the strictness of the timing. Video:

Mario Kart 7 - Blue Shell dodge (with a Mushroom) - YouTube

(Also, I'm 99% sure it was possible in DS as well, but was completely redundant as you could dodge Blue Shells with Mini-Turbos back then)

Was on 150cc Toad Circuit, 1st for most of the 2nd and 3rd laps. Mid-way through the 3rd, Mario got a Blue Shell and f'ed me up something wicked. Mario was in 2nd place when he got the Blue Shell, no joke.

Maple Treeway.
Blue shell chasing me down when I was mowing through piles of leaves after the cannon.
Hit a mushroom just as the blue shell was coming down.

Cuz that's how I roll.

It's was also pretty cool to dodge red shells by drifting (not even having to use the boost) on Double Dash. Just wish that game was a little more challenging to complete...

More blue shell hell for me. I was in first place 2 tracks in a row and got hit by a blue shell on pretty much the last corner. Finished the first race 2nd and the next race 4th! I honestly can't be bothered to play MK7 anymore, it stresses me out too much when this happens, and it seems to happen a lot! Can't wait for more games to come out, I won't be playing much more MK7.

Edit: By the way, I forgot to laugh at how you misspelled your name... Hahahaha!

Blue shells strike fear into people. its fun to pull one off at Snes Rainbow Road.. have fun dodging that without falling or bumping into someone.

I believe my user title sums up my thoughts toward blue shells. What an evil, evil creation they are.

Just to add more rage: today I was racing my friend and some computers. I was in 1st pretty much the entire race, doing awesome, had quite a good lead. Then bam. There it was. 3 seconds before the finish line. Came 2nd. My rage knows no boundaries. Sadly this happens all the time, too.

Default Is there anyway to dodge a blue shell?

And by this, I mean like in MKWII, where you can use a shroom to dodge an incoming blue shell if you use it at the right time.
What I wanna know, is, can you do this in MK7?
Other than having to repetitively look at the bottom screen to see if anyone has a blue shell and stall and wait for the other guy to go infront of you before they launch it.
'Cause I'm trying to get a 3 star on 150cc and Mirror cups.

Same method as in WII. just use a shroom.
though I think timed turboboost would also hit the spot

You CANNOT avoid a Blue Shell with a Turbo Boost, no matter how well timed. This isn't Mario Kart DS.

That said, it's perfectly possible to dodge a Blue Shell using a Mushroom - The timing is just stricter than in MKWii.

Noone has succeeded at doing it yet - The Blue Shell travels faster in this game, making dodging it with turbo boosts as of yet impossible, and dodging it with Mushrooms more difficult than it was in Mario Kart Wii.

I know I'm late but just saying, people will say use the mushroom when it's spiraling in the air. False. Use it when it's about to hit the GROUND. Once you get there hang of it it's as easy as using a boost at the start! Also, when you fall off the edge of the track and lakitu pulls you up, if you hit the accelerater as soon as you hit the floor, you get a boost!

Once dodged a blue shell using a mushroom in 1st person view...now that's an achievement!

not only was I unable to see the shell spinning above me, but also I had to listen very carefully and use my experience with dodging blue shells in 3rd person too. Its all about timing, once you've got that down you can dodge them whether in water or air ;D

By all means you are spot on with the blue shell tip, but allow me to correct you with boosting after Lakitu drop. Timing again is essential, and in fact it is actually a split second after you touch the ground. so wait for Lakitu to drop you and a SPLIT second after you get ground accelerate. I can get mine every time.

Thumbs down Blue shell Back Ups!

Have you ever had those moments where you have a blue shell coming after you then you start backing up? Or even online where you actually have a person competing with you to be 2nd!XD

Too many.
In Single Player I usually save a star or something until I see lighting or a blue shell.

I once heard the warning sound while racing, so I impulsively started backing up, but the other player drove at such a speed that he passed me just as the blue turtle shell hovered over my head, then 2 other people passed me and beat me to the finish line.

Do this all the time, and if I think it's too late to 'trick' the shell I'll make sure I get the person behind me feel the explosion too.

I was racing last night and there were me and 2 other people in a tight 1st/2nd/3rd during the race, and a blue shell came and we all kept backing up trying to get behind eachother lol, it was actually really funny. It was on Maka Wuhu too after the glitch, so we all saw it coming a mile away so our little back up fiasco lasted for 5 seconds as well, making it that much funnier

In GP I always back up into 2nd and let someone else take the hit, unless if I'm close enough to finish the race or really far ahead.

When I was playing a few hours ago, on Rainbow Road, I was in 2nd place and for most of the race, someone had been holding onto a blue shell. The moment the person in 1st place had crossed the finish line (they were miles in the lead), the blue shell was fired and targeted me instead. So as the thread name says... DAMN YOU, BLUE SHELL!!!!!11111!!11

I remember this one time I was playing my friend in a community 1v1. It was Airship fortress, last lap now its all intense. I'm second place and get one of the item box you get just as you turn into the castle.

I'm holding on tightly to my spiny shell, his ahead of me by metres. Look at my map, his about to turn onto the jump ramp. I release my shell, when I turned the corner all I saw was a massive blue explosion with coins flying everywhere. it was beautiful

...well he respawned at the beginning of the jump ramp so it wasn't that bad for him, nether the less that scene was so memorable.

I feel like such a scum bag when I use the Blue Shell or when I'm in second and pass 1st who is hit by one. This game breaking flaw needs to be taken out.

Default I'm not that fond of the blue shell

I really hate the blue shell when it hits you when you're gliding. There's a good chance that stupid shell will hit you into whatever hazard you're flying over.

I mastered the art of dodging a blueshell. See the blue shell spins 3 times before knocking u out. If u hav a mushroom. After the 3 spin it'll stop. Once it stops( in mid air) use a mushroom. Downside lightning, which is commonly rare

I feel your pain, it has no use whatsoever for whoever shoots it, as you only get it when you are last place. I think nintendo just did this so you take as long as possible to complete the damm game.

Added after 5 minutes:

Good news the rarest item to get in first place is a mushroom Which you can use to dodge a blue shell

Ah blue shells.
I usually get them on the last course of a cup on 150cc. I'm seconds from the finish line, about to get that beautiful 3 star rating, then I hear that cursed shell coming to ruin any chances I had of getting it.

Sure is. On land, in the water or in the air, you can dodge blue shells with a properly timed mushroom.

There are at least 3 ways to avoid a blue shell:

1. Drop out of first place. Of course the player behind you will try to do the same thing. However I've seen instances where players will try to drop out of first place even though the holder of the blue shell hasn't thrown it yet and used it to get into first place.

2. Use a mushroom. This requires a good sense of timing.

3. When the blue shell gets close to you, fall off the stage and it will pass you entirely. All you have to do it let it do another lap around the course while staying in 2nd place and it will attack the people behind you and whoever's in first place.

That third one is vveeerrrryyy iffy because it seems to only work in multiplayer (no need to do it in single player, of course). On top of that, you have to fall in a location where you KNOW you'll respawn behind the blue shell. It's risky, but it has hilarious results if done right.
I've only managed to do it twice. :U

I didn't include that one because it's not exactly a common method. There aren't a lot stages where you can get a free item from a breakable box or a leaf pile or something, and have it conveniently be a mushroom or a star.

If you don't like Blue Spiny Shells please don't play Mario Kart.

I use to hate the blue shell, but there's numerous ways to avoid it or make it's impact less deadly. As soon as I see that someone has it on the bottom screen, I think fast.

Mario Kart: Double Dash hates me, always sending the CPU's to throw blue shells. Especially when I am turning corners.

I've never heard of using a bomb to dodge a blue shell before. Can you link us to a video of it being done, or explain how to do it?

I'm just so unlucky. I'm roughly 10 seconds from winning the race and then get hit by an evil blue. Happens to me most of the time I play online.

He's talking about the DS version. Eww, I just hate saying "Mario Kart DS"

Anyways, Spiny Shells are alright, however the only problem with it is the map display showing the items you have, allowing players to puss out when they see one.

The blue shells are horrible in MK Wii. They ruined my chances of getting a perfect score in Mirror Mode SO MANY GOD DAMN TIMES ;A;

4. Lag out of it.

5. Hold any other item that'll create a dodge, or use any item laying on the stage such as a mushroom or star.

6. Getting hit by a banana, fire flower, shell, etc. at the close enough timing to lessen the effect.

Also, about MKDS, why would you want to dodge with a bomb when you can with a drifting mini-turbo?

So today i was on SNES Rainbow Road and one of those Blue beauties decided to come after me. I was too far in first to take someone down with me so i opted to fall off the cliff. Shell hit me as i was falling and the person in second threw 2 red shells. Luckily when I got back up those red shells had passed and I got the landing boost. Still managing to keep first. Ahh, it was spectacular.

It happened twice I destroy the blue shell with the. Bomb it's like they clashed and blew up each other. I did this by throwing the bomb barack to make sure I stay in first place but instead I distoy the blue shell if this happens to anyone PLZ tell me this is a new way to dodge a BLUESHELL (Mario Kart 7 is a glitches up game compared the the other Mario karts)

You realize that you can hold an item without using it right away, right?

Just like the shock it's possible to have two blues at the same time, it's just much rarer because of how often people immediately throw them.

I love the randomness they bring to races...as long as I'm not in first. T_T
