Default Speed vs Acceleration

Hey guys , I was just trying to figure out what are your thoughts on Speed Vs Acceleration . Now obviously characters with more speed tend to have higher handling with lower weight and so on but lack the speed for those straight aways and Speed leans towards the heavier characters that have considerably less handling then the lighter characters but are much more effective on straights and get more push from mushroom power-ups ; the coins help to balance this out somewhat but there is still a noticeable difference between those who have higher accel vs speed. What are your thoughts / preferences?

I have a question. Does weight cancel out speed and acceleration? Like if I have high speed and acceleration but also high weight does it make me slower than if I had low weight and high acceleration?

Maybe you could change the thread to a general thread about kart stats? I have a lot of questions.

In real races I usually go more for acceleration because I know I'll need it after getting hit by items.

In Time Trials it's speed all the way.

I like to have a 3 in speed and 4 in acceleration but sometimes I even go for a 4/4 combination (even though it ends with a 2 in weight).

So weight does slow you down?

Weight does NOT slow you down. Weight affects who wins in a collision, as well as gliding time. The more important point is that weight and acceleration tend to be mutually exclusive - You don't have many combinations which score highly in both.

Purely speaking in terms of stats, I'd say Speed. Speed is what allows a player to gain a lead, speed lets you get to the coins and item boxes first, and speed has the most effect on the race as a whole.

Acceleration completely depends on which mode you're playing. For Time Trials, it's worse than useless. For standard racing, it's a viable stat as it means you don't get item wrecked quite so much, but I usually wouldn't go for acceleration at the cost of speed.

Characters that have higher weight tend to have lower acceleration , acceleration does have its strong points and I prefer more accel over speed because of much faster movement ex: getting hit by a blue shell or green shell how fast you will move after the hit / recovery period. Also characters with higher weight tend to have lower handling , this matters because of how tight you can hug the corner and come out efficiently and quickly. In my experience bowsers drift is second to toads cornering/drifting abilities. Characters that have less weight have better cornering overall and i would have to say the number of "straight tracks" most definitely does not out weight the number of tracks with bends and corners.

and out of turns ,

Speed is the magnitude of velocity.

Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes with time.

So higher weight characters have alot/near maximum velocity will go faster
Lighter Characters with lower velocity but higher acceleration will recover faster.

Racing = Acceleration

Time Trial = Speed

Battle Mode = Acceleration + Handling

Speed is how fast you go.
Accel is how fast you reach your top speed.
Weight determines who gets knocked back in a collision; the player with lower weight. Also, the more the weight, the shorter the gliding time.

I usually go for acceleration because a lot of good characters have that as their best stat and there are good kart combos for them as well

Speed in time trials of course.

For any other kind of racing, acceleration. I always tend to think that anything above 3 speed is excessive, but having loads of acceleration works wonders, especially if you get Spiny'd on the last lap. Though, fortunately, the wooden wheels are there to save the day. You get great speed underwater plus amazing handling and acceleration.

Yes it does slow you down
Whoever dais that weight dont affect speed?
If it was only to affect the collision thing, then id get the heaviest kart and not think about its speed and acceleration!

Weight and speed are two completely separate stats. Speed is how fast you travel through a given medium - Land speed affects speed over land, Sea Speed affects speed through water, and sky speed affects speed in the air.

Weight does not affect any of the above three stats. What weight DOES affect is who has higher priority in a collision of equal speed, how far someone can get pushed/knocked back, gliding length and (possibly) fall speed. Weight DOES NOT affect your land speed in any way whatsoever, it's just that Heavy Characters are given high weight and speed stats, meaning the two usually go together. They are, however, completely independent.

I always prefer to use speed over acceleration. I've never believed that slow and steady wins the race. In a race, I believe that you should go Sonic the Hedgehog speeds or go home.

Well speed is good if you want to win
but also when you get hit by an item you need good acceration if you want to contine to be in the lead
I think about 50/50 for each would be a winning kart

I personally try to find a balance between speed and acceleration. For example, my current kart's stats are:
Character: Shy Guy
Speed: 3.75
Acceleration: 3.5
Weight: 1.5
Handling: 4.5
Off Road: 2.5
With the balance between speed and acceleration, I can quickly recover from items while not being extremely slow at the same time. I can see where the weight would be a weakness, but I personally haven't ever gotten knocked off by anyone because I'm aware of my weakness and try to avoid other racers as much as possible. However, I have great flying speed and time because of this. That's how I try to balance out my speed and acceleration.

I like to balance things out with Acceleration, Speed, and Handling (Egg 1 + Mushroom Wheels + Parafoil = FTW). I would say acceleration, because if you're hit by something, you can recover your speed. But without good speed, acceleration is worthless. Which makes them equally useful.

Off topic: But handling is by far the best. It makes drifting and sharp turning easy.

Here's a kart try out:
Bumble-V
Roller wheels
Swooper Glider

With a certain character I can never be beaten unless I get hit continuusly and drive recklessly.

For the most part, higher acceleration is superior to speed, usually I try to get a bit more acceleration then speed since I can drift well.

Well, I firmly believe that the driver makes the kart, not vice versa. Use what is most comfortable with you.
