Default Nintendo 3DS Video Preview Review

YouTube - Nintendo 3DS Preview Review

So I was at Makuhari Messe for the event and I got a chance to play the 3DS. The following link is my 9 minute review on the 3DS so far. It's not in too too much detail but I thought I'd share it anyways. If you guys have any questions, feel free to post and I'll try to answer it as best I can.

PS: I already asked if you could choose the 3DS's language upon start up and they said they don't know yet.
PPS: I also am left handed and asked if there would be an option for lefthanded players regarding Kid Icarus (where you use the right hand and the stylus to aim)... they said "you're kinda screwed". lol

Thanks for the video preview, man. However, I beleive the 3DS will be $250 here in NA, so is it worthit now?

Also, I'm a little disappointed for what you said about Kid Icarus... I guess I'll adapt.

Lol, I know, I didn't want to believe it at first and I wanted to purchase it for the 25,000 yen since I live in Japan, but after playing with it, I have to be honest, right?

Just to reiterate. Buying the 3DS is totally worth it, but to me, it's not worth purchasing at the Launch Price. When the price drops, to at least 250 dollars, then I would have no hesitations buying it. ^^; I agree, I think it will end up being $250 dollars (or $249.99 technically) in North America. The reason they say it's $300 dollars in Japan is because of the really poor exchange rate right now.

With regards to the DSiXL being $270 dollars. The CURRENT price of a DSiXL in North America is roughly $180 after tax. I don't know why it costs $270 where you live.

For the record:
DSi XL (LL) Launch Price was $190 in NA, 20,000 Yen in Japan (Currently about 18,000 Yen in Japan).
DSi Launch Price was $170 in NA, 18,900 Yen in Japan (Currently about 15,000 Yen in Japan).
DSlite Launch Price was $130 in the US, $150 in Canada and 16,800 Yen in Japan.
The original DS phat Launch Price was $150 in North America.

If you consider that perspective and you add in what the 3DS has offered for this generation (based on what I experienced so far at Nintendo World). I can understand $250 dollars at most, then work backwards with eventual price reductions, but $300 dollars is a bit too much for a handheld device.

The 3D is not too much of a gimmick. Personally, I find that the 3D camera and augmented reality to be more a gimmick in comparison.

PS: Kid Icarus was kind of odd to control, but that's mainly because I was left handed (probably). It kind of felt like Bayonetta or some flashy hack and slash game if it was played from a "to the side" 3rd person shooter perspective. You use L to attack. The attack pattern was basically, if you are too far from the monster, you shot the gun and if you were close enough, the same button would be a melee attack. The slide pad allowed Pit to side step in all directions. If you jerk the slide pad in a direction, he will dash (like in Smash Bros). Your right hand is used on the touch screen to move Pit's aim on the screen (there is a 3D crosshair on the upper screen). Parts of it like the flying sequences felt like rail shooters with Pit. It was enjoyable but I was kind of expecting more freedom in terms of movement and such. Actually, a good comparison of the flying aspect is a little bit like Star Fox 64.

Out of curisoity, how does the slider feel? It looks a bit high up on the system...maybe too high for those with big hands.

Also, how do the games compare from online screens to in-person? :3

The 3D slider was really awkward at first because I would usually move my head around while playing. For example, while playing Street Fighter I got really into the fighting so naturally I brought the 3DS closer to my face. This caused the 3D to cross and I sort started to lose the effect so I quickly used my right pointer finger to change the 3D-ness. It felt a little awkward because I couldn't find the "sweet spot" right away and I was trying to button mash (lol) at the same time. I think if you just maintain your position things will be alright, it was just kinda hard learning that part at first.

When I was playing Kid Icarus, they provided chairs so I got to sit down and that one felt a bit more alright cause I was sitting instead of standing. You have to use a stylus for that one so the slider was a bit more accessible to change and felt a bit less awkward.

To sum it up, the hard part about the slider is finding the "sweet spot". If your head is too close to the screen you have to lower the 3D-ness and if it's too far you have to increase it.

And seeing the game live is SOOOO much more different than the screen shots.. except for maybe street fighter 4. That one didn't look super 3D. Ocarina of Time, Star Fox, Animal Crossing, Res Evil, and the Miis in particular were amazing. MGS's jungle setting reminded me of James Cameron's Avatar a little bit.

The closest youtube video that reminds me of this kind of 3D is that old school "this is probably what the 3D in 3DS is gonna be" video.

it's actually kind of similar but not as detailed as that game.

Thank you Jonnysee.

Well at least I won't use it by accident -- so it's fine by me.

That's also good to hear. Even the miis look good? I'm impressed.

haha, I own that game. (imported DSi) It's hard to set up initially though. :<

It's more of a depth 3D, but it CAN pop out like 3D movies, developers just don't do it as often because it's bad for your eyes. Notice how in any 3D movie, pop outs aren't that abundant, there's usually only 9 or so pop outs the whole movie because the movie devs know its bad for your eyes to have alot.
