Default Official 3DS Forums Book Club : What are you reading right now?

Welcome to the official 3DS Forums book club!

Here you can discuss and recommend different books of any genre for other members to read.
Also, depending on how active this thread becomes, we may even have reading events!
I'll start this thread off simple and if it becomes popular, I'll add more events and information.

I'll start off by asking if any member here has read The Last Oracle by James Rollins?

Talking

If you are into heroic adventure with gladiators, monsters and fantasy then David Gemmell has a great series of books that are fast paced with witty dialog and good fight sequences.

Here is an example of a line from one of his books LOLOLOLOL :

"I would rather slap the nuts of a hungry lion than kiss your sister"

Harry Potter Series.
Eragon Series.
All of Gary Paulson's books. (The Hatchet, Wood Song)
Percy Jackson Series. Not the movie. If you want to see crap, the movie is perfect for you.

I liked the dragonriders of pern and eragon books, and now I'm reading some of carol bergs books. I really liked the lighthouse duet, as it portayed the concept of magic in way I've never seen. Rather than potray it as a happy simple force, its portayed as a hard drug type substance. IE: the character needs a plant to use it, and without the plant he goes through withdrawls. Now I'm reading The Bridge of D'Arnath series, I would really recommend carol berg if your into fantasy and looking for something new.

On top of these, I'll add the Hunger Games series, which is like Battle Royale.
I also like the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson, which is a very relaxed style and is sorta anime written. Not for everyone, though

And yes, the Percy Jackson movie was crap. I regret seeing it.

Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club, Snuff and Invisible Monsters, among others

Irvine Welsh, Trainspotting (the movie is awesome too, as well as Fight Club, highly recommended) Acid House, Filth

And for the begginers of dirty realism, Charles Bukowski

Does anybody read about history or US history specifically?
I'm a US History major, so if I could discuss any books or articles on the matter, I'd by very happy.

Is it based on true events or is it fiction?
Because if we're talking about fiction, The Red Badge of Courage is an amazing story.

You sound like you'd enjoy Tales of the Otori. There are five books, but there are three main books that form a trilogy. Read those. They're brilliant.

And I'd like to recommend The Hunger Games too. Fantastic.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is another good one, as well as the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

My dear friend Danger got me hooked on the A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones). I ran out and bought the boxed set and it's just... amazing. I guess I could attempt to compare it to Lord of the Rings for people who have no idea what it's about... or just go watch the first season of the show. That's the whole first book right there, for those that are incredibly lazy. lol kidding, I watched the show first too

Other than that, I read an unhealthy amount of comics. More recently, Locke and Key has become my favourite series of anything ever. It's about these kids whose father is murdered and they move into his childhood home, where they discover a bunch of keys that all do different and cool things. And there's evil and swearing and lots of blood. Good stuff!

Me and FeartheJo have similar likes so I will definately try out what you suggested.

Also if I could add to these lists the City of Ember series is great (even if it is for a slightly younger audience)

Now, this doesn't seem like it would fit in with other books recommended here, but Shanghai Girls was a great read. I picked it up at an airport bookstore and got drawn into it very quickly.

Lisa See is a great author, in general. I'd recommend any of her books.

Edit I forgot to mention, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers by Loung Ung was another great book. It was a required read some years ago for a class, but it really was amazing.

Alright guys. First let me say, thank god this thread was started. Second let me ask are there any English Majors up in here?

Third let me suggest to anyone that is into "good" thought provoking literature: Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Most notably his famous One Hundred Years Of Solitude.

He is an amazing writer, my favorite, and my personal inspiration to become a published author.

And finally,

Has anyone here ever read The Skeleton Man by Jay Bennet? It is a phenomenal book. However, it's been out of print for quite some time if I'm not mistaken, so it may be kinda hard to find.

I'm reading the Dexter series right now. I'm on book six of six. In order they are:
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Dearly devoted Dexter
Dexter in the Dark
Dexter by Design
Dexter is Delicious
Double Dexter

These are the books that inspired the showtime series, but it doesn't follow the books at all, except for much of the first season, but that is all.

I have many more book recommendations, but I can only view this site on my kindle fire and using the virtual keyboard for a long post is too annoying.

As far as classic literature goes, Bram Stokers Dracula, The Jungle, and The Grapes of Wrath are my favorites.

I'm enjoying the Lincoln Rhyme series by Jeffrey Deaver atm.. am 6 books into the series, and there really good if you like psycological thriller type books.. forensic analysis and crime work.

He also wrote the new James Bond which is.. slightly above average i guess.

Default Favorite Book?

(If there's already a post like this somewhere else around here, then please direct me there but if not...)

Do any of you folks have a favorite book or favorite book in a series? Ever since the new year started and I finished reading a book in my English class I've been addicted to books (that probably therefore makes me a nerd, XD).

Lately, I've finished reading the 'Hunger Games' series by Suzanne Collins who is a phenomenal author. At the end of each chapter is suspense that makes you want to read more and MORE everytime!!

That being said, what is you favorite book, or favorite book in a series?

I've been reading 11:22:63 my Stephen King.

I've never been a big fan of his work until I picked up this book. I suppose it's because I'm genuinely interested in the kind of subject the plot deploys.

I won't post a description but you should read a plot summary and see for yourself. Well worth the read.

Only the first one, in my opinion. The second one is boringly unoriginal, and the third one.... meh. It's different than the first one in terms of story, but not great.

I have read the first book in the "Hunger Games" and got half way through the second but I put it down when I started Stephen King.

I should probably finish the trilogy off because I was really enjoying it.

I bought this book yesterday on my school book fair called "The Red Pyramid" by Rick Riordan. I love it so far, is fantasy/adventure (the kind of books I always read).

I also recommend this book by Michael Scott if someone likes fantasy/adventure stuff, is my fave.

I loved Percy Jackson but just couldn't get into "The Red Pyramid." It's still lying under my bed.

As for The Alchemist, I forgot about these! I think I read the first 3 and stopped, this is a nice reminder to start back

You should give them a try! They're very interesting and fun to read

Yesterday I bought another 3 books on my school book fair. They were cheap and since I don't have any library around (since Border's closed) I took advantage.

Hey guys, I've been looking to get into Cyberpunk for a while now. I've narrowed down my first experience to Neuromancer or Snow Crash.

I know Neuromancer is considered the "daddy" of the genre, but I hear it's slow and kinda wordy. On the other hand, Snow Crash is faster and more fun, but the plot apparently doesn't hold up as well.

If any of you guys have read both of those, which would you recommend?

Bump

I've finally started reading again and I managed to finish Powers by Ursula K. LeGuin:

It was all right, I guess. I felt like not much was going on for the first half of the novel which is why I sort of lost interest in it for a long time. It probably should have been much shorter and the "powers" mentioned in the title didn't have much to do with the overall plot.

It's the last book in the "Annals of the Western Shore" trilogy and I'd say that Powers is the weakest one. Gifts was probably the best one out of the three and I definitely recommend it.

Started working through the game of thrones audiobooks. Pretty good so far, and I am liking how long they are. Great series.

I got The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck in the mail today. They are both by Brain Selznick.

Spoiler!

I actually read both of them today. They look thick but they can be read quickly because they both have a TON of illustrations in them. Nice, feel-good stories.

If you like Graphic Novels, Check out the Scott Pilgrim Series. The Movie, IMO, wasn't the best they could do, really.

I love Chuck Palahniuk. I have read a couple of his books. My Boyfriend owns all his books. Eventually I will read them all. I'm reading Dean Koontz Fear Nothing now.

I'm reading one of the Redwall books right now. It's called The Sable Quean. I only have to finish this one and The Rogue Crew and I'll have read all of the Redwall Series. inb4furry

By the way, you Hunger Games fans might want to read Suzanne Collins' other series, The Underland Chronicles. Here's the first one:

I read some of the redwall books like 5 years ago. I remember this one was really good.

Yeah, that one is good.

As far as Redwall books go, the earlier books are the best. As the series went on, the stories stopped feeling as "fresh". The Sable Quean just felt like more of the same.

I just got done reading the Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld.

I thought it was really entertaining and one of the few trilogies that I've read that didn't take a huge dip in quality by the third book.

It's a steampunk novel based upon an alternate history of WWI.

The illustrations are by Keith Thompson and he did a great job with them:

This is simple, and I don't believe I have seen a thread like this. What are you currently reading or planning to read.

Right now I am finishing off the series "The Secrets of Nicholas Flamel"

I am on book 3 (of 6) called "The Sorcerress"

If you have never heard of Nicholas Flamel, well he was mentioned in Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (or Philospher's stone as it is called in some places). He is a man that found a way to live forever.

I plan to start reading Pokemon Adventures after that. It'll be something new to me, I have never read manga.

Then I hope to start the Hunger Games series. It sounds interesting.

Bought Ms. Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs yesterday, and it was so exciting and addicting that I finished it today. Just finished it an hour ago actually. It's amazing. <3

That series is very good, in my opinion. I really like it. I'm waiting for book 6 to be released in Dutch (once I start reading a series, I want to finish it in the language I'm reading it in or it'll confuse me).

The Hunger Games series is okay, I think. I found the first book very good, the second mediocre and the third one okay.

This is what I'm reading now:

After a bit of research, I have learned the Final Fantasy IV: The After Years had a novel printing.
Again, I must find a copy. O.O If anybody has any information on it, I'd gladly appreciate you sharing.

I read that. Twice actually. Neither was of my own choice. I read that my freshman year of high school. Then I moved to another town and I had to read it my junior year. Same thing happened with Of Mice and Men. I do like both books though.

Thanks to my new iPad, I've started reading again. No more trashy magazines for me.

Re-reading:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
Adrian Mole Diaries (8 books) - Sue Townsend
The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold

I'd thoroughly recommend all the above. They're all v different, but I've been solidly reading for 25 years so my tastes are 'flexible'

Enjoy whatever you're reading guys, and thanks for the tips, I've already taken note of a few that look interesting.

I should watch the series sometime, soon, but I'm afraid I don't have the time for that.

It's very good. This is coming from someone who is a very picky reader, and refuses to read anything that isn't top of its genre.

Low Fantasy Genre; expect a lot of political intrigue. Violence is found in the series regularly, but it is often done with precision, like that of a surgeon, not a street thug.

Gratuitous slaying is not the order of the day, but rather a cautious and surreptitiously planned elimination of foes.

Last of all, read the books before you watch the TV series. Don't get me wrong, the TV series is pretty well done, but it does not come close to matching the brilliance of the books.

I'm really liking it, but they can be a bit long. I'm on book 4 atm,but I'm listening to them on audiobook so I have something to do on my 30 min commute or when playing games. Each audiobook is about 30-40 hours O.o

Actually that's a little low. Wikipedia clocks them at:

Book 2: 37:17
Book 3: 47:37
Book 4: 31:10
Book 5: 48:56

And even though they are so long they are almost impossible to put down. It's a very dangerous series for your social life/grades.

The Hunger Games series is okay, I think. I found the first book very good, the second mediocre and the third one okay.

This is what I'm reading now:
So you are reading the secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel too? Yay! I read that they are making the first book into a movie.

Rachel: I guess I've read Little Women more than once, but that's a classic. What's so great about The Shining?

Joey: The question is what's not so great about The Shining? And the answer to that is nothing!

'nuff said.

I'll start off by asking if any member here has read The Last Oracle by James Rollins?
No, I haven't read that book... Or even heard of it... I guess I'm kind of in the dark when it comes to books.

Right now, I'm reading Final Fantasy III Square Enix 公式攻略本 by V Jump Books. I got it for 105 yen used at the BookOff. It's a strategy guide. Basically I read the relevant pages, then do the relevant part in FF3 DS. I'm trying to read the whole book cover-to-cover.

Why am I doing this? To improve my Japanese. FF3 is fun. The strategy guide has taught me many new words and even a few new kanji, and it has nice design/lay-out that is very friendly on the eyes and fun to read. There are also furigana above the words so I can look them up easily in the dictionary.

Read this last night. A quick funny read, especially if you've lived in Texas. (Because you'll get why they make fun of some of the locations.) And it's only 3.50$ on amazon.

Cool thread. I was reading Shadow Prowler by Alexey Pehov and The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss up until a couple days ago but none of those really captured my attention as much as I thought it would. Next on my list are:

As you can see, I read lots of epic fantasy. Used to read lots of teen fiction but I outgrew that stuff when I graduated high school (22 now).

I'm a fantasy man. I'm reading: The Warlock
It's by Michael Scott, the fifth book in The Secrets of the Immortals Nicholas Flammel series. My favorite is the second book, The Magician.
Here's a cover of the Warlock.

Sorry for the late response, but...

what

I don't like movie adaptations
I didn't like Harry Potter that much (though it wasn't bad, but the books were waaayy better) and the Percy Jackson adaptation was TERRIBLE. LIKE REALLY BAAAD.

I'm afraid because they'll have to make 6 movies or something to make it work. I hate it when movies deviate from the storyline of the book just to close the story.

I was excited for the movie at first, but then I saw the movie trailer... Blech! The movie better be better than the trailer.

I just finished Nights by Elie Wiesel today for my AP English class in the Fall. If you haven't heard of it, it's a memoir of a Jewish teen's life in concentration camps and well... it can get very depressing.
Currently looking on iBooks for some whimsical fantasy book to lift my spirits.

I really recommend the A Song of Ice and Fire series, but the way it jumps character perspective can be off putting to alot of people, but stick with it, it's worth it

im not reading one right now, but I am writing one. I'm not very good at story telling yet, but once I get a chance to revise I think I will be able to fill in plot holes and what not. I have done a lot of writing the past few year, but this is the first time I am bringing what I learned to make something. So I am pretty excited to learn, grow, and work hard. Perhaps with hard work and a little luck I will be able to make a career out of it. Not likely/easy but working hard is doing my part. A guy can dream.

I just started reading Brandon Mull's new book series, "Beyonders". So far, I am enjoying it immensely. I'm normally not a fan of combining pop-culture and High Fantasy (see what happened to Percy Jackson?), but this does things better than I could have hoped for. I will be checking out the second one once I finish this one today (I'm a speed-reader).

I just finished reading The Hobbit. It was fun to see what was different from the movie and remembering how the chapter names were used, and now I'm looking forward to seeing how the second movie will be.

....But now I don't know what to read. I have Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" next on my list (reading through all of my sister's old books), but I kind of want to try the LOTR trilogy instead. I never could finish Fellowship of the Ring when I was younger, but now I feel like I could make it through.

Starting to read Catching Fire. The movie theater where I work at put up a poster for the movie, so that was kind of my wake-up call to get started on the book. I hate seeing the movie before reading the book.

Well done with Atonement since two months ago. I have a few that I want to read but just have there in my room. Janet Jackson True You and Ricky Martin Me. Currently reading Extra Lives by Tom Bissel and the Perks of being a Wallflower for the second time. Haven't read it since high school (want to refinish reading before watching the film, that's why I am reading it again.).

Reading two.
Well, one is a webcomic which you can buy as a book.

1.Twokinds which I'm really gripped with, I can't wait to see next week's update, although it's a webcomic, it's been converted into a book... so I guess it kinda counts :|

2.Judge Dredd, punk.

I am currently reading Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil and gonna finish the latter half of The Hobbit. Dynasty of Evil is the third book in the Darth Bane trilogy, but I know the general gist of what happened. The Hobbit is a book report book that I think I got behind on. Not too interested in it. I don't care for elves and hobbits and Orks.

The last one I read was Native Son by Richard Wright (highly recommend!)

I love Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett the most! It's a short play. Nonsensical. So funny!

Bump:

Reading Platypus: The Extrodinary Story of How a Curious Creature Baffled the World

I've already read it but I decided to give it a second read-through since it's only about 200 pages. It's more about the history of the scientific study of the platypus than the biology of the animal.

Well, I've been read quite a few books recently so I'll just name them now:
Legend by Marie Lu
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, which is one of the best novels I've ever read.
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Prodigy by Marie Lu
and the Everlost Trilogy.

I read Deception Point about a year ago. It's a great book indeed. It's definitely worth a read. Dan Brown's other books are a bit better though. The only one of his I haven't read is Digital Fortress. I need to check if any of my local bookstores have it...

Its a brilliant read but I do agree there MG, after reading all his released books the others are better, but that doesn't mean this is a bad book Digital Fortress is a really good book, not quite on par with Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons but still worth a read. His new book is looking really good so really looking forward to reading that!

The Alchemist. Someone came up to me at work and gave it to me, but only if I'd read it. It was such an unusually delightful circumstance, that I can't help but read it!

I have a summer reading list, so I need to either finish RoTK (the book is so long, I may need to pick another classic) or start Xenocide.

Would any of you count Speaker For the Dead by Orson Scott Card a "classic"?

It's been a long time since I actually finished a book but I was finally able to sit down and read this one. The Diviners is the first of what is supposed to be a 4 book series and because of that it seems like several characters and points are introduced yet their significance to the overarching plot has yet to come to fruition. This is the main fault but otherwise this has been one of my favorite YA novels in recent years.

Brief synopsis: Set in 1926 New York City, Evie O'Neil must use her supernatural powers in order to bring down a serial killer that has been dead for almost half a century.

(FYI: Be prepared for some gore/violence and some other mature themes.)

Started Insurgent a few days ago. A couple of my friends read the series and really loved it, so I decided to try it out as well. Flew through Divergent really fast, but haven't had much time for this one yet.

The last books I bought was: Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road - Neil Pert, 11/22/63 - Stephen King, and Dragon Tears - Dean Koontz

I have read Dragon Tears before, its my favorite Koontz book.

Ghost Rider is a book written by Neil Pert (Drummer of RUSH) about the time after his Wife died that he decided to travel for awhile on his motorcycle

11/22/63 is a Time Travel story about the JFK assassination, I believe.

I havent read any books in awhile, but I think I will read Ghost Rider first.

I work in a library so I read SO MUCH books in a year, it would be long to make a list. But recently, I really liked Divergent. Read also Insurgent, but it didn't catch me as much as the first did...Will read the third one when it comes out in french.

I recently finished reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It was a great read and it can really change your perspective if you let it. Its meaning is indeed the phrase "If you want something a lot, the whole universe will conspire for you to achieve". It's light and imo, a nice way to pass a boring afternoon.

Now, I'm reading Divergent and I've been loving it so far. I have finished about 3/4 of it and I feel the last bit will be the best out of the book. I'll probably buy the next one, Insurgent, right after I finish Divergent.

I'm currently nearing the end of the second book of the Survivalist Series by A. American.
Survival / Apocalypse books never have been my style, but I'm really digging this series.
Book two is called Surviving Home.

Finished reading The Rogue Crew by Brian Jacques. The last book he was working on before he died. :/

Starting on Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

Creepy but humorous. I'm already a third of the way through it.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was a nice read which is good since I already had the sequel, Hollow City, on hand:

It reminds me a lot of psychonauts? If that makes sense. The sequel was a lot less humorous than the first and ended on a sad note. Not sure how many books the author plans to write but I am looking forward to the next one.

id say it was pretty good, ending seemed kinda rushed but idk what id add to make it any better,
probably more battle and more on how silver and butterfly's life turned out after everything happened
8/10

Emma, start reading Divergent now! It's awesome! I'm about 2/3 into the second book(Insurgent) and so far the story and setting are both great.

Just finished The Devil In the White City. An absolutely marvelous account of the 1893 Columbian world fair. I recommend it to all.

Now starting Henderson the rain king.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson is very lengthy but good if you enjoy military and code breaking stories

I just finished Cry, The Beloved Country. It's heralded as a great novel on South African Apartheid but I honestly felt it was flawed with good points.

Now reading a quaint little book called the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.

I've been doing a bit of reading the past couple months or so.

I finished The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy; a fun book. I kinda liked the silly humor of the author, though I wouldn't exactly call it the masterpiece some people seem to think it is. A very fun read though, I'll finish the rest of the series at some point since I bought a single-book collection of the series.

Next, I read Sharp Objects. The story is about a young journalist who returns to her home town in order to cover the story of a serial murder who kills little girls for her paper in Chicago. The story is very interesting, but not for everyone, since it's sick from start to finish to say the list. A good read for psychological thriller/horror fans though.

Currently, I'm reading The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, the first book in his The First Law trilogy. The book tells the story of three men, Logen Ninefingers(aka Bloody-Nine), a northern warrior on the run from his former master; Jezal dan Luthar, a captain in the king's army and of San dan Glokta, an Inquisitor. The story and the world Abecrombie set for it is interesting, but the writing kinda lacks throughout(I've read more than 2/3 of the book). Still, he manages to give good descriptions and to write believable characters, there are no heroes in this one.

After finishing the 4th book in the Jumper Series I have kind of stagnated on reading at the moment. I think I may try actually finishing Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson for my next book. Hopefully it actually picks up, as I stopped reading it back when I first grabbed it because it was boring.
