Questions:

* Solo League:
- 7 questions per season.- Each question made up of 2 to 3 separate parts.
- 2 Points for correct answer,
- 1 Point for a close answer.

Answers:

Solo League:
- Please submit answers via the reply button above the question
- Reply only to me. Make sure to deselect everyone else
- Answers will be sent to you as soon as I receive your reply.
- Answers are only sent to those who attempt to answer the question(s)
- All answers, for any question, are valid so long as I receive them
before the end of the current season.

Achievement Badges

- Players receive achievement badges for fulfilling certain criteria.
- Some are permanent, others require players/Teams to maintain performance to retain them.
- A letter will be sent to any player(s) who receives an achievement notifying them of their success.
- Achievements carry a Score which helps determine ranking when players Total Score is tied

What Happens When the Scores are Tied?

* If the Total Score is tied then ranking is determined by:

1) Achievement Score (Ach.) - The sum of the total value of a players combined achievement badges.
2) Responder Score (Res.) - The total number of questions answered on the day the question was sent.
3) H.R.T Score (Hrt.) - The players highest running total over 3 consecutive questions.
4) Tie-Break Score (Tbs.) - The players total from the end-of-season tie-break question.
5) Stalemate: If the scores are still tied, then both players will be given equal position.

Sorry I misread your earlier question. The points aren't for anything in particular. It's just a bit of friendly competition and another reason to check your Swapnote/Letter Box everyday and participate with others.

I agree that perhaps it would be amazing to have some prizes to give out as an incentive but that would be rather expensive for me, although if I do win the Lottery...oh man, i'd give out games and eShop cards etc to the winners. It'd be awesome =)

Hi Dex,

The Trivia will be purely gaming related and will be comprised of written questions, picture clues and sound clips. A good portion of it will be Nintendo focused but questions may be about anything gaming related, from any period/era.

Questions may also have multiple-parts to them sometimes or they could be trick-questions etc. I will try to keep it open ended and as fresh as possible.

Hi there,

I will be keeping track of everyone's points in a database on my computer. On Tuesday, I will tally up everyone's scores, enter them into the database and send a message to everyone in that particular League. The message will contain the current standings, showing the participants names and current points.

I will also include a shortened link to the first post in this thread, allowing people to view a clearer, more detailed league table online.

Hi Bella,

The deadline for all answers is Tuesday, February 21st

Only the people who have sent in their answers will receive the real answers back so if you haven't replied to a question then you won't get the answer for it.

This way, players can take up to 3 weeks to send in their answers and people who join up during the season, are also able to have a go at all the questions so long as they get their answers in by Tuesday, February 21st

League 1 and League 2 get different questions although they are usually based on the same theme. e.g - both got a sound clip question on Pokemon for question 1, but those in League 1 were given a more obscure Pokemon to identify.

Should you perhaps revise your system for sending out answers...

What if 2 people are friends, and one tells the other the right answers before the 2nd person has submitted their answers to you? (if that makes sense). This scenario could encourage cheating.

The current system encourages increased participation through more immediate rewards and an acceptance of new players during the season, who may otherwise be deterred by having to wait a few weeks before being allowed to play.

My main focus for this season was to increase the number of players and to refine the rules and overall structure of the league to ensure a dedicated user base and to decide upon a system that worked.

Getting input from players is an important part of this and Bella makes a good point. One avenue of cheating, researching answers on the internet, is almost impossible to stamp out (sure i've tried by putting anagrams, hidden pictures and sound clips into the questions) but other things, such as when to release 'answers' is something I can control.

As Gamerfan says, it's just for fun, and not being a wealthy man =) there is no prize involved so I wonder whether even players are serious and invested players enough to consider trading answers with one another.

It's a balancing act between openness and minimising fraudulent activity. I'm really at a quandary as to what to do here. =(

An Achievement System is to be added to the League. A Swapnote message will be sent out tomorrow. Here is a list of six achievements i've drawn up so far:

... and here's at look one of the Achievement Badges that I will also be sending out to deserving players tomorrow. (some of you are halfway to achieving a Six-Shot)

Don't worry about the Values assigned to each achievement, they are just used to determine positions when the Total scores are the same. Full details are on page one for those of you who want to read further.

Yeah it is 'just for fun' but some people love win. And some people are very competitive.

We are on a video games forum, the emphasis is on fun.

Mario Kart 7 is all for fun but that doesn't stop people using glitches to advance their stats and how many people have posted theories regarding hacking and cheating whilst playing MK7 online? And I reckon most of the people who do this, are not young kids.

Just adding some credibility to my query.
May I be so bold as to suggest that you send the answers universally after specified deadlines. It would ensure fairness, and like you said something within your control.

You have put a lot of thought and effort into the SLT and so far it has been brilliant. I would hate to see it demise because of unfair gameplay. If I caught wind of cheating, I wouldn't want to play anymore, it would take the 'fun' out of it.

What if the right/correct answers would just be sent out after the deadline?
That way, sending the right/correct answers within the competitors will be avoided. Just to make it fair to those who give their answers immediately.

Thanks for your continued support and intelligent suggestions with regards to the issue of improving fairness within the S.T.L. The more I read the arguments 'for' a return to 'Answer Deadlines' (as there was in Season One) the more I am convinced that perhaps maybe this new 'Immediate Response' system is flawed.

I still don't have any evidence or a particularly strong belief that people are manipulating the system this way, but if even one individual was doing so, then that would be to the detriment of the league and would serve to discourage other players.

If I were to adopt the system you're proposing, when would be the optimum time to re-introduce it? Here, I think, is the case for each:

At the end of the current season: I have already tampered with the League System quite a bit already this season. Answer delivery times and methods were changed (to instant delivery and only to those who answer) the value of points was changed (from 1 and 0.5 to 2 and 1) and now achievements are being added. Players may already be bewildered as it is and need time to acclimatise to all the changes, altering it further may disillusion and discourage them.
Re-introduce them immediately: To ensure fairness for the remainder of the season, Answer Deadlines should be brought back from the next question onwards. Since the system has been tinkered with already, players are used to there being changes and any confusion can be dispelled by sending out a letter to everyone notifying them of the change and explaining that the current season is about refining the workings of the League to determine the best system possible.

I think you should reiterate deadlines and inform all players that you will now send answers to all respondents after the deadline, effective immediately. For the remainder of the season, all players who have yet to submit Q1,2,3 will now receive their answers after the deadline.
I don't think you should worry about having too many changes in a short space of time, people will understand your effort to sustain fairness.

Whilst deliberating on the arguments put forth by myself, you and others, one thing occurred to me that perhaps needs to be discussed:

Whilst I do see that cheating through sharing answers is plausible under the current system, the motivation to do so is less clear. The motivation of the person seeking the answers from someone else is obvious, but what of the person who willingly shares the answers? If, as you have stated before, some people like to win and the league is competitive by definition, why would another player share the answers with another to the possible detriment of their own position in the league?

Thanks for your opinion on the 'anchor' achievement. I thought i'd reply with a few points on the achievements in general. Nobody has any points added or any points taken away by getting an achievement.

The purpose of the achievements are:

a) To give players something to aim for
b) To encourage players to answer more of the questions, particularly those at the bottom who for whatever reason, may only have answered 1 question of the 4 submitted.
c) As a way for me to determine league position when two players share the same points.

You are correct when you say that the 'anchor' isn't especially fair when you consider that there are people who haven't answered any questions and thus it seems like i'm unfairly bestowing a demerit on those who have at least replied to one question.

However, the way I see it, until you at least attempt to answer a single question then you aren't technically participating in the league. That is why in the current table (both on the thread and sent out via Swapnote) those with 0 points do not appear.

In-fact, should those on 0 points fail to answer a single question by the end of the season, then I will take it to mean that they aren't interested in playing and no more questions will be sent to them.

...keep working on those achievement ideas if you feel up to it and thanks for trying =)

You make a good point. I don't mean to sound cynical in respect of others, nor do I wish to accuse anyone of un-sportsman like behaviour. I try to be a sunny, positive person. But a strive for fairness in all eventualities should take precedent over assuming all possible outcomes and motivations of gameplay. IMO.

I'm not sure why there was a problem but i've re-sent Question 1 to you both. Please delete any invalid notes that came through and keep me updated. Also, if the letter is taking its sweet time getting to you, try forcing it to come through by tapping on the arrow in the bottom right corner and selecting send/receive. If you've already tried this then disregard this instruction.

Hi Rose,

To get into League 1 (Advanced) you will need to come in the Top 10 in League 2.

Originally, it was going to be much harder, like only the top 2 players would get promoted, but because about half of League 1's players from last season have dropped out then I need to get more players into the upper league to balance the numbers a bit. League 1 only has 15 players at the moment whereas League 2 has 30+

Hi Mike,

I've just checked the recipient list for the answers to Question 4 and i definitely sent it to you. If you mean that you haven't been told what your score is then perhaps i'd best clarify.

Providing personalised score summaries for every player would prove too much work, so the best system I could come up with was to a letter that gave the answers to the relevant question along with how many points it was worth. Players were then meant to check them against the answers they'd submitted or to check the league tables on this thread to ascertain their score.

I have checked using two different browsers (Firefox and Internet Explorer) and the images load perfectly fine. Have you tried using a different browser? Yesterday 3DS Forums wouldn't load in Firefox for me at all (temporarily) but loaded just fine in I.E, weird.

Hi Players,

Here are the latest S.T.L updates:

Tables for League 1 and League 2 have been sent to all players via Swapnote.
The most recent, up to the minute tables for League 1 and League 2 are now available to view on the first page.
The Final Question will be sent out in less than 24hrs time
If players are still tied after the final round of scoring then those in Important Positions (e.g - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Promotion Slots, Relegation Slots etc) will be sent a special Tie-break question to determine the victor.
New Achievements: Suggestions so far include the following:

- 'Drawing' your answers
- Finishing in 2nd or 3rd place
- Unique Champion badges for each League
- Gold, Silver and Bronze badges for the top 3
- Current badges to be replaced by Mario related badges

I quite like the last suggestion. Perhaps a 'Star Coin' could replace the Champion badge and a 'Bullet Bill' could replace the Responder badge. Just an idea.

Let me know if you think of any =)

Thanks Rose & Dcv for your suggestions. I really like the idea of different achievements for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and using something fast, like a Kart, as an icon for the Responder badge. Here are some of my own submissions:

and God knows i don't look at any answer that are mistakenly sent also to me

Glad you are in for next season =) That's actually something i'll be asking all players once the season finishes on Tuesday. I suspect some will say they no longer want to play and others won't answer but we'll see.

Currently, only the top 10 players in League 2 will be promoted but this could change depending on how many people decide to opt out. My decision isn't final, final yet but I wouldn't count on it being changed unless the circumstances left me with no choice =)

Hey Mike,

League 2 was always going to be tough this year. The people at the very top were so good, I was having a hard time coming up with questions to stump them.

Even the person currently in 10th place has scored 29 Points, out of a possible 36. Astonishing. It'll be interesting to see how up on their gaming trivia the new members are, but with a similar performance I think you'll get a little closer next season. =)

Update: There's about 8hrs of the season still to go, after that i'll start drawing up the Final League Tables and will send you out a copy via Swapnote.

Thank you both for your continued support, enthusiasm and valuable input. I thought i'd made a big mistake by posting this thread in the 'Matchmaking' section rather than on the Main Page, but it's been anything but lonely and your continued correspondence has provided the motivation required to maintain the thread.

@Sean: You are gracious in defeat, although 2nd place is hardly a defeat, particularly when the caliber of your opponents was near perfect. Coming up with those Tie-Break questions was tough, I sort of wish now i'd just made Champions of all 3 of you. =)

@Bella: In answer to your question, all scores revert back to 0 i'm afraid. Although, I keep excellent records, so if S.T.L is successful enough to make it through a few seasons, i'll publish a Super Table that collates scores across every season.

I thought i'd covered up too much of the picture but frankly by that point I was desperate to fool one of you so I could declare a Champion before the season ended. =)

The useful aspect of it was that if ever I need to issue another tie-break question to determine position, i've got at least 6 I can re-use.

Hi Players:

- The first of two Questionnaire's/Survey's will be sent to Season 2 players via Swapnote later today, at around 5pm (GMT)

- They represent an attempt to get some constructive feedback from players and improve how the League operates. I would be very thankful if you could contribute and send me a reply. =)

- An Opt-Out letter will also be sent at around the same time to those players who only answered 1 or 2 questions last season and will ask them whether or not they want to participate anymore.

- Depending on how many say no, as well as how many New Players get added between now and the beginning of Season 3 I may decide to create a 3rd league to accommodate everybody.

- Main Page: The Latest News section will be updated soon and the Final Standings for Season 2 will be taken down this weekend to make way for the Season 3 Roster of players.

P.S: Taken down is perhaps a poor description, Season 2 results will still be viewable via a link just like the Season 1 results are, and important information like who was Champion, promoted etc will continue to be shown on the main page.

Hey Alvin,

Nobody likes the 'Anchor' it seems =) That said, players who usually receive the 'Anchor' are ones that only answer about 1 or 2 of the 6 questions in a season, so as long as you answer as many questions as you can then you're unlikely to finish bottom and receive the anchor achievement.

The caliber of player in League 1 this season is very high indeed, so if they are true to form then finishing in the Top 10 may prove difficult. That said, you are currently two points ahead of a previous champion and look on course to securing your goal of avoiding relegation. =)

Hi Binky,

Thanks for your question, it actually helped me realise that I hadn't updated that portion of the table correctly. In future, the columns will look like this:

Total A-Score R-Score HRT-Score

The A-Score, R-Score etc are a way of determining ranking when the Total Score is tied. So if two players have the same Total Score, then I would decide their ranking based on the following scores:

1) A-Score: Achievement Score: The sum of the total value of a players combined achievements.
2) R. Score: Responder Score: The total number of times a player answered questions on the day they were sent out.
3) H.R.T Score: Highest Running Total of 3: The players highest running total over 3 consecutive questions.
4) Tie-Breaker: A tie-break question will be sent out to try to finally separate the players. This will only be done at the end of a Season, as a last resort
5) Stalemate: If the scores are still tied, then both players will be given equal position.

It's mostly for my own benefit but players could use their knowledge of it to try to improve their overall position. For instance, one of the brand-new achievements is really obvious, yet nobody seems to have taken advantage of it thus far.

Hope this helps explain it a little better =)

To be honest, the achievement didn't exist originally. It was only after you sent me the letter about the mistake in Question 3 that it occurred to me that I could base an achievement off it, thus increasing the number of badges but also as a special reward for people like yourself who really helped me out by drawing attention to potential errors in the questions.

I've just double checked League 2 Question 3 on Swapnote and I haven't received an answer from you. You did very well on Q1 and Q2 so I did think it strange when I didn't get any answers from you on Q3.

I have re-sent (a fresh, newly created ) Question 3 to you, and have also sent you Question 4 (yesterday) so leave your 3DS on stand-by and make sure it is connected to the internet. Check to see if you've received any questions from me in a few hours and then write me back on the thread to let me know they've arrived.

If they have arrived, answer them both and i'll check Swapnote to see if they've come in. If it still doesn't work I have a fix we could try.

However, today is different. Here are the latest updates:

New Idea!

I've been thinking about ways I can increase player choice/control, and one of the ideas I came up with
was to give players the ability to earn Topic Tokens. These could be exchanged at any point during the
season and allow players to decide the topic for one of the next questions.

I haven't decided how Topic Tokens would be earned but here are a few possibilities:

Awarded for every season you complete
Awarded for answering a special Star Question correctly
5 Responder Points would earn a Star Coin which can be used to
purchase a token. These Responder Points could be accumulated across
multiple seasons.

I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what you think of this idea, or if you have any ideas about
how Topic Tokens could be earned, or any other ideas, please let me know on the thread. =)

harder still just to stop the top players from getting a perfect score every time. If it helps, you're currently ahead

I really love the idea of Topic Tokens, that you could purchase with responder points, as it means anyone can buy Tokens if they have enough points and not just people who are top of the League. I hope this idea gets implemented, but may be best to do this at the beginning of next season.

@John: Apologies if I haven't promoted the thread all that much. I've included a link in my S.T.L letters
quite a few times but it's always phrased as "if you'd like to see full league tables, please visit..." which
doesn't really explain that there's a whole thread devoted to it. So i'll make that clearer in future letters.

Also, in answer to your question, the difference between League 1 and 2 is that the questions in League 1
are more difficult. Also, new players automatically start in League 2 and have to work their way up.

Here are the latest Updates:

Responses to Question 5 have been very slow indeed. With less than half the active players having
sent in their answers so far. Of course, players are free to answer whenever they wish.

I am also considering some New Ideas for the League:

Topic Tokens: Players could use these tokens to select the topic for a
future question.
Team Table: Teams made up of two players each add their scores together and try to win the
Team Table Title. Players will be able to pick their own team names and team emblem.
Prizes: Although strapped for crash, I am looking for ways to give out prizes to winners etc,
so stay tuned.

These are merely ideas at the moment, but I would like to add something that gives players some control
over questions as well as another feature like Team Table that provides further motivation and encourages
people to keep playing.

I've added little head shots of Players Mii's (well 10 so far) beside players names in the
League Table, just to personalize things a bit. Plus, it looks nicer than having a wall of text
and numerical data =)

If you'd like a Mii Head Shot beside your name instead of a black silhouette then just send
me an image of your Mii's Face. Here's how:

Hey Sean,

No need to apologies, I fully understand that we all have
lives and that business has to be taken care of before we
can do the things we want.

I apologise if I ever gave the impression that I was being
pushy in any way about people getting their answers in.

My intention is rather to issue reminders since I know that
sometimes Swapnote/Letter Box can fill up with letters
really fast and the ones you want to pay attention to can
get lost in the shuffle.

One more question to go this Season and then i'll be taking

Hi Players,

Here are the latest update, well update:

i) I've altered and refined the Achievements section on the first page.
Some of the scores for the Standard Achievements have been lowered
and the scores for League Specific Achievements have been removed.

Basically, I didn't think it fair that the top 3 players from each League
get to carry over an Achievement Score (between 1 - 3) to the next
Season, as firstly, these are top players, it's not as if they need any help,
and secondly I think Ach. Scores should reflect your achievements over
the course of the current season only, which ensures a 'fair fight' so to
speak.

League Specific Achievement Scores will be removed from Season 4
onwards and the badges themselves will be purely decorative.

ii) I'm a little dissatisfied with the image quality of the Badges and
League Tables you have received via Swapnote/ Letter Box. I'll
be improving them which should make reading them a little easier.

iii) League Tables on the main page are now a little bigger, which
makes viewing them a little easier on the eye. Don't forget, you can
always click the image for a larger, higher quality version.

iv) The Final Question of the Season is this Wednesday and it'll
feature a brand new style of question.

20 dollars seems a little much but e-shop gift cards would probably be the best idea since it get around having to ship the gifts.

@John: Thanks very much for the Mii Pic, it is now proudly displayed next to your name in the League 1
table on the Main Page. I also tried to transfer the image with the Shy Guy mask but alas you cannot.
Unfortunately there are no image repositories for the masks online either. =(

@Cheezy&John: The possibility of handing out Prizes is still in the planning phase. Mike (from League 2) has
generously offered to assist with the prizes for North American winners in any way that he can. At the moment we're
deliberating on:

* What prizes
* Who can win them
* How many prizes
* Budget
* Shipping costs
* Regional concerns

John's point about how gift cards negate any shipping costs is a good one and it's a prize we're considering.

However, the League as it stands makes sharing prize duties potentially one-sided, since it's perfectly possible that all
the winners in Season 4 could be American say, which would leave some possible prizes like (Wii Shop Gifts, Software
that only works in one region) unclaimed.

To that end, i'm considering splitting the player base into North American and European Leagues (maybe 4 leagues of 14)
with an easy and hard League each. I'm still keen on having a separate Team League as well but i won't take on that
much if I feel I can't handle it. Thankfully S.Bear (from League 1) has offered to manage one/two of the lower leagues if
that's what I choose to do.

So it's all just an idea at the moment. I'll keep you posted.

Hi Players,

Just a quick update:

Almost all of the 'Active Players' in League 2 have now sent in their answers to Question 7
and most people have now responded to the Vote on the additional question.

Players have until Saturday, March 24th to cast their vote, as if the result deems that the
majority support an additional question then i'd like to send it out quite soon considering the
end of season Deadline is on Tuesday, March 27th.

@Morgan: Giving out prizes retroactively unfortunately that would mean giving out at least
5 prizes (we're in our 3rd Season, the second with 2 Leagues) which wouldn't have much to
give out in Season 4.

S.T.L is simply a fun little game we can all play together on our 3DS's and the Prizes are just
something i'm doing for next Season as a Bonus really.
It would be great if I could give out prizes to the top 3 in each League but ultimately it'll be a
question of what's feasible considering the budget. It also depends on how the Leagues are
structured next season. At the moment it is likely that they will be reformed according to region:

League 1 (North America)
League 2 (North America)
League 1 (Europe)
League 2 (Europe)

A prize might be given to everyone who finishes in 1st Place in each League, and then if
possible, for all those who win their respective end of season Playoffs.

Possible Prizes: eShop Gift Cards, Club Nintendo Rewards, Wii Shop gifts (VC, Wiiware)
Kid Icarus AR Cards, Nintendo DS Games.

I've been thinking it'd be great to get a Gaming Magazine or Gaming Site interested in getting
involved with Swapnote Trivia League but the main problem is that I don't see how it would
benefit them. I've probably got my head in the clouds even considering such things, but whether
you think i'm daydreaming or might be on to something. Let me know in the comments.

Is it really a good idea to split the leagues? They're small enough as it is... Perhaps it would be better to simply award prizes to the top players from each region rather than splitting the user base, for the spirit of competition if nothing else.

Nintendo is already driving me crazy enough due to their obsession with regional segregation.

We shouldn't encourage them!

ball in the driveway, believe me, it's not meant that way ^-^ )

Great to see you here on the forums! With regards to the user base, it is something that's always been
fluid, I dare say there are no more than 5 left from Season 1, so I was always going to have to recruit
new players, especially since I suspect that at least 30-40% of the people in League 2 are no longer
'active players'

The reason behind setting up regional leagues was so that I would handle the European prizes and Mike
the North American ones. I didn't want to have a scenario where one was giving out more than the other.

Your idea about awarding prizes to the best player from respective regions is nevertheless a superb
alternative as the balance I hope to maintain will not be unsettled as we'd simply be rewarding the best
American player and the best European player in each league. I'll be giving it some serious thought once
this Season is over.

Despite setting myself the goal of avoiding relegation this season, i'm still disappointed Serpream and Youssef scored so highly in the end as I was hoping to hold on to 6th. =(

I like Tekka's idea but i think leagues should have equal numbers of players from each region so everyone has same number of people to compete against.

It would not be very fair if there were more Americans say as it would be harder to get American prize whereas European one would be easier because less competition.

Now that Season 3 is over, i'll be taking a short break from S.T.L
and then i'll be back to plan the next one.

I will formally announce it soon but Season 4 will now feature
Prizes as well as a Team League, amongst other minor additions.

I was half expecting a dramatic return from Binky right at the 11th hour as well. Well Done Tekka and Everyone else for making it interesting. I would also like to thank Paul for his efforts as well, as it requires so much work behind the scenes. Keep up the good work, and I can't wait for Season 4.

Hi Players,

Here are some small updates:

Player Roster for Season 4 is now on the 1st page. It shows a list
of the confirmed players for NTSC and PAL regions.
Team Leagues: Announced yesterday via Swapnote this will feature
10 teams made up of 4 players each (all from the Player Roster)
Players individual scores in their respective leagues will count toward
their Team Score. Teams will be made up of 2 players from each region
and each member from the Top Team will win a prize.
Team League Names: Since we are still in the planning stages, feel free
to reply with some possible Team Names you'd like to see.
e.g: Team Falcon, Team Yoshi etc...
