Default Was I the only one disappointed?

Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but with Mario I just expected more. The 3D Mario games have been fresh pretty much every time. Sunshine completely changed the gameplay, Galaxy introduced plenty of new gameplay mechanics and made the levels huge and different, Galaxy 2 refined everything to a point of near perfection, but 3D land... It just felt like a cash in.

The level design was nowhere near on the level of the Galaxy games, there was no theme per world, tanooki suit was really the only new thing they had and that was placed everywhere, the lives system is still pointless, the boss variety is pathetic, and the levels are way too linear.

With Mario I just expect something huge, and it feels like Nintendo just wanted to put out a Mario game so they rushed one out quickly for sales. With Galaxy, Nintendo felt like they were trying to surpass themselves and truly push the boundary of 3D platforming, but I don't think their hearts were in it this time. I also got bored with this one very quickly, the incredible level design in Mario games is what usually keeps me coming back.

Exactly the same here, but probably to a lesser extent. There were some levels that really had that "WOW!" effect on me (ex. Ship level where the spike things pop out at you in cheesy 3D xD) I wish it had more replayability.. such as those MINI-GAMES that were in New Super Mario Bros. DS and Super Mario Land DS.. this game would've been MUCH better >.<

There were some parts that felt similar to Galaxy but other parts were new and amazing. Overall I really liked the game.

Keep in mind that the game isn't trying to be an Exploratory Platformer like Galaxy, it's supposed to be Open but Linear. Shigeru said it was like this because he wanted to ease in those intimidated by full scale 3D platforming.

Also, if each world had a theme there would be no way as much variety between the levels, both in gameplay and scenery.

I see what you mean by boss variety, kind of lacking. Wouldn't of hurt to add the odd Tanooki Petty Piranha or Tanooki Kamela here and there. But the final boss was definitely the most epic Bowser fight ever.

I would have liked multi- player then it would have been great
i finished this game in the weekend i got it felt to easy and short for me
levels were way too short
so basically what you are saying is pure truth in my opinion

The main levels were too easy and the special worlds were (most of the time) the original levels with some cheap twist added to them (like reducing your timer to 30 seconds, adding a lot of enemies, etc)
I still like the game, but it wasn't as good as i thought it was going to be. Like someone already mentioned, it felt a little too linear.

I think the problem was that everybody was expecting SM3DL to be a direct descendent from SMG2 and be an amazing platformer. Unfortunately, this game was for the 3DS, which doesn't have the technical capabilities like the Wii to do any real mind-blowing stuff with it (other than the added 3D effects)

And I agree with the level design being too repetitive and the themes a tad redundant. I also hated the :30 second missions and Cosmic Clone levels because it's just the exact same level with those added twists. Maybe if they added a different part to the level when these obstacles came out, it would have been more enjoyable, but that was not the case.

I liked the game and i wasn't dissapointed (except for the bosses) it was fun fast those replayed levels are the easier ones with a harder twist it was fun and challenging and to be honest they could have never included the special worlds

Way too easy and short. Sure, you can try to go for the fastest time on some levels, but what the point? I was very disappointed this time. I was looking forward to this game from the moment it was announced, and got the biggest let down since the insane 3DS price drop. If they can make something as fresh, new and lengthy as Galaxy, I will be pleased.
Really Nintendo? I know you can do better than that.

I was dissapointed as well. I was planning on buying it, but a friend brought it over for me to try out. I played it for about 2 hours (On like World 4 or 5), But didn't find it to be very entertaining. So I never bought it (But I still got my awesome Zelda OoT, Star fox 64, Pilot wings, and Mario Kart 7 to play).

finished about 5 worlds and i am having trouble with the camera angles in certain situations. really puts you in a tough spot and makes your jumps really difficult to execute.

While I enjoy SM3DL, its linearity makes me appreciate Super Mario World more and more.

It was good while it lasted but it really wasn't long enough.
I still don't have all the stars on mario 64 (I dont play it anymore now but i used to play it for ages) whereas this game was really short and easy.
Left me wanting more...

Nope. I don't understand the complaints personally. As far as Mario platformers go, I think 3D Land is everything it was supposed to be.

I loved it and wasn't all that disappointed. I did think that it was a little on the easy side, though.

I thought the level design was incredible.

I just thought the bosses were rushed and cheap. I understand Mario doesn't have a punching ability so it's difficult to find a way to defeat bowser, but come on...

Mario Galaxy had some of the best video game bosses... ever. Same with Sunshine.

Nope. I like it. I like having an easy game sometimes when I'm stressed out. I wish some of the worlds were longer and i'm having a good time finding all the stars and some are really hard for me.

Default Is it Just Me, or Was This Game A Bit of a Let Down?

EDIT: I ORIGINALLY MADE THIS IN MY OWN THREAD, SO IF SOME PARTS SOUND A LITTLE WEIRD, THAT'S PROBABLY WHY.

Okay guys, let me just start by saying that I thought Super Mario 3D Land was a very creative, and entertaining game, but in my opinion this game was a bit of a let down.

I mean after playing Super Mario Galaxy 2, I constantly asked myself, "How are they going to top this?" and then I heard about the New Super Mario Game for the 3DS. At the press confrence in January (or whenever it was), Nintendo released 4 images from the game. The most notable had to be the small Mario without a hat. This was probably MY favorite image because it showed us that the classic mushroom would be back, and the dumb life gauge that have been around sense Super Mario 64.

By the time E3 hits, everyone is even more excited for the game, as we recieved all sorts of new trailers, footage and more information on the game. The tanooki suit is also confirmed. When we see all of the Super Mario Bros 3 elements, that only made me want the game more. I watched all sorts of off screen footage just to see what else the game had in store for us.

Well, the time comes when the game is released, and we all go and get it. Once I finally got my hands on it, and I can't even tell you how happy I was. After roughly 4 hours of play time total, I was already at world 8. I was slightly disapointed at this point. A while later, I went off to beat the Final Boss. The Boss fight was quite amazing, I will admit that. And then the special worlds appeared. I really was expecting this, because I new that Nintendo wouldn't make a Mario Game that only lasted 4 hours. I work my way through the Special worlds, and yeah, they were fun. They were were creative. And yeah, the ending was awesome.

...But after some thinking, it really didn't top Galaxy (or it's sequel) in any way. I mean, we had the same 4 bosses over and over again. And the music... I swear, they used the same track in over half of the levels. I still have that song drilled into my head. And the levels were just too short and too easy. No, I haven't found all of the star coins yet, but you don't have to look THAT hard to find them.

Despite all of that, I really did like the power-ups. The return of the Tanooki suit was probably one of the best things about the game. But why did Nintendo have to take away the flying ability?! Oh well. And the boomerang suit was pretty clever. I could finally get back at all of the Goombas and Koopas who had killed Mario in the past! These were some pretty awesome power-ups, and I'm actually impressed at how Nintendo keeps bringing new ones to our games instead of reusing old ones. Although sometimes I wish that they would bring some old ones back, like the Spring suit from Super Mario Galaxy...

Now this game, like every other Mario game I've played was amazing and I really did enjoy it. Yeah it was great, but in my opinion, it really didn't even come close to comparing with the Super Mario Galaxy games. Please keep in mind that this is only my opinion, and I only posted this to see if you guys agreed (or disagree) with me. Please feel free to post your responses below, although although I ask that you don't bash anyone for what they think.

.....But we kind of expected something better because it's the successor to Galaxy and Sunshine. Instead we got a game that would be easy to a 5 year old.

I'm not too sure what you are trying to say. But I don't think I agree.

And Mario Kart I agree with the multiplayer thing.

On this topic, I don't have a problem with the linear structure of the game...every game can't be the same as every other on the market or there wouldn't be any creativity.

I would have liked more of a challenge like the old Mario games of yore (1985 to 1993). I know Nintendo was going easy for younger audiences, but I'd like to point out that many of us were kids in those days playing those difficult levels.

I think he meant Super Mario 64 DS or somethin'. But for me, SM3DL was EPIC. On Cosmic Clone levels, I was all like, "crap i am SCREWED". Mega Clone levels? VERY difficult for me. S7-castle was almost IMPOSSIBLE for me. S8-crown? Every time I died:"FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" overall, Nintendo did a good job at impossible levels.

I think something people don't realize is that these Mario games aren't completely geared towards us. These games are geared more towards younger generations. We are just the people who want to continue playing it, and as we get better, the games seem to become easier.

That's just the thing, isn't it. All of Nintendo's franchise games are designed so that beginner gamers can have fun with them. Nintendo doesn't have to ruin things for younger players to sell games, they are good enough that most seasoned players enjoy them anyway. The handful of whiners that think "sequel" is supposed to mean "harder" aren't enough to matter.

The only thing I didn't like was Boom Boom and Pom Pom being the boss every time. Besides the occasional Bowser fight. I mean even NSMB2 has the Koopalings and Reznor as bosses, that's more variety, even though Reznor is the only tower boss.
