This game became a definite buy to me when they announced online play and ranking stuff, but I think I might wait a little while until I can buy it somewhere for $30 (might just buy it at $40 new though because the 3DS's line up is looking pretty dry around the time of its release...).
Nice OT by the way! Hold up..... There's Mii Customization? It's the little things guys.....

The Nintendo Network logo tells me that it may be unveiled before May, yet, you never know with Nintendo. . . Also, this is a must buy, but not at $40. One more thing: I'm surprised we're the first ones to get the game. o.O |

I hope "Skill Building" is similar to the Mario Tennis GBA's rpg elements. If I can level up my Mii, and use him in Singles, Doubles, and Online, I'll buy it day one.

I personally am very excited for this game. I have never played a previous Mario Tennis but I am willing to start afresh here.
I think though that the Demo Ninty put out will be the key factor about whether I buy it or not.

I'm actually kind of excited for this game now, at first I was a bit skeptical, but now, not really. It would be a definite buy if it was cheaper though, I don't think all of the features are still worth $40, I hope Nintendo does something like Tetris Axis and makes it $30 instead of $40.

Wanted to bump this thread to say I have already pre-ordered this game. I was a big fan of the Nintendo 64 one, and Mario Power Tennis was one of my most played GBA games, I loved it. So when I heard there was another handheld version coming out I was all over it. With the online play as well I'm really looking forward to this

I'm getting Mario Open Tennis 3DS regardless if it has DLC or not for me just an added bonus personally. & DLC in Mario Open Tennis - 3DS wouldn't be all that bad you want an extra court to play on DLC it lol. I'd rather spend the extra cash on a game I know I like as opposed to buying a game in the e-shop knowing I have a 50/50 chance of liking the game.  As long as they don't over price the DLC in the 3ds games it's cool with me. Happy Gaming! (^_^) |

DLC is not really extra content. It's stuff taken out from the game and sold separately for extra money. It's a roundabout way to get people to spend more than a normal price for a game. In other words, it's a trick, a scam. Most people are ignorant about this and don't realize they are getting screwed. It's really sickening.
Also, you don't even own the DLC. You are licensing it. This reduces the value of your game if you want to sell it, and also discourages people from playing old games because the DLC won't be available forever. This is all done to damage the used game market and retro gaming. It's really depressing hearing about gamers being tricked into supporting DLC. You are paying more for less. That's not something to celebrate. Please open your mind and start thinking for yourself. The world is full of bull****, and most people aren't even aware of it. |

The only thing I'm interested in is what characters are in this game. I'd like to see the Koopalings, but they'd take up too many spaces in the roster... I'd like to see some classic Super Mario Bros. 2 enemies/bosses, and Tatanga, but I have a feeling Nintendo has completely forgotten those guys.
I'd LIKE Nintendo to just surprise me, but after seeing Queen Bee in Mario Kart 7, I'm not so sure I want that, either... Other than that, I'm sure to get this game, as I've always liked the Mario Tennis series. |

★, I see where your going with this but for gamer's who have gamed all there lives like me & I'm sure a few other's on here there are very few games most of us haven't already tried by now. I respect the old school thing with gaming on the older consoles/handheld's because once in a while I'll bring out one of my older consoles to play sometimes the handhelds but I also like trying new stuff in games too as well. I'm not being tricked into supporting DLC I fully support it in games I know full well I like to play & if I have to pay a few more buck's than so be it. Happy Gaming! (^_^) |

i like virtua tennis, the simple tennis gameplay and even the mini-games are very enjoyable...
but i'm still not sure if i'll get this mario tennis open... features i liked so far are: mini games different types of shot for more in-depth gameplay download play + online play still not sure how gyroscope works, i hope its implementation will be fun just like aiming with gyro like RE:R and Mario 3D Land... |

I hate Miis, but the Mii customization in this makes it more fun and interesting to play as Miis. I still wouldn't use a Mii to play as anyway, especially since Diddy Kong is playable.

Turns out this game does not have worldwide netplay, only regional. I watched today's Japanese Nintendo Direct and Iwata said "zenkoku", which means Mario Tennis Open has regional netplay. I have a Japanese 3DS so that would mean I can't play with anyone outside of Japan.
I just canceled my preorder over this. I will probably pick this game up used for cheap a few years from now, but there is no way I'm spending $80 to get it at launch. I'd be tempted to get the USA version but the 3DS itself is region locked because Nintendo doesn't want my money. Oh well. |

i just watched the nintendo direct of europe and it seems that it supports the regional online play... they are saying, (paraphrase) you can play online with other players in your region.... and also... could you be the no.1 player in europe? (reference to regional online mode, instead of saying no.1 player in the world)

Each generation Mario Tennis uses it's own generations most popular or unique characters. That is why in Power tennis(GC) it had Petey P, Wiggler, Shy Guy, And Para trooper for nostalgic purposes. Expect characters from Mario galaxy and Mario galaxy 2. Oh, how i miss sunshine........

Pleasantly surprised to see TV advert for Mario Tennis last night for first time. Prime time evening spot as well.
The advert looked good, but for me, this is also very promising. Nintendo wouldn't spend the cash on TV advertising if they didn't have complete faith on the game right? Theory. Unless it's a case of more money than sense..... Also the UK release date, finally! May 25. I'd been checking the Game website every few days and again this morning and still no release date - strange. But at least there's something concrete now. And getting ready to preorder....and click!

6.5, thank god reviewers are telling it how it is. Lack of genuine content, mediocre online and stupid design choices all amount to the worst Mario Tennis in history. Well, as a long time Mario Tennis fan who has played every game in the series, I will not purchase this one new. Nintendo got lazy yet again. I will not support it. I will buy it used down the line, as I recommend that everyone does. Vote with your wallets people.

I see all what IGN means,but the character custimization is fine with just being the mii,I havn't got a 3DS game in a long time,so i'll probobly just get it.
Not saying it's that good,but can't wait to play multipler. It's still sad about the online multiplayer tho :/

The fact that the game will move for you in gyroscope mode combined with the color-coded touch screen controls really makes this game seem easy. Not sure if I really want it anymore...

Saw a commercial for this on TV today.
Quite a shame the game isn't as good as it could be. Maybe if it had them RPG elements...I'll probably get it when it's cheap. Wouldn't mind a demo on the eShop either.

This may sound stupid, but being able to play as my Mii holds a large factor in whether I get a game or not. I love being able to play as my Mii.
When it comes to game reviewers, I really only trust Nintendo Power. They're the only ones who don't judge a game by it's producer instead of the game itself. At least, not from what I can tell. |

Just got the game today. I love it so far. I have beat the first two cups and have been playing some online. There really are a lot of customization clothing and rackets for purchase and it definitely has that addictive Nintendo charm about it. This game is great. Haven't unlocked any characters yet.

The online so far is great. Not many people but only because it comes out tomorrow.
I thought I wouldn't like the Gyro Controls but they are actually really good. To me they are the best and most fluid Gyro Controls so far. And the game looks really nice from the on the court view as opposed to top down view. I only play with Gyro Controls now and I'm someone who really doesn't like that type of control scheme. The only thing about it is that the movement of your character becomes automatic and all you are doing at that point is aiming the system and pressing a button to make the shot. I can understand why they made the movement automatic though, it would be a little hard to move your character and move the system too just to get a perfect shot. You can move your character still though, all you have to do is move the Circle Pad and they will move. But once you stop it goes back to auto. |

So far all I run into is players using Boo just because he has the tricky stat. It's kind of annoying. I also feel like the character movement is sluggish compared to offline single player. I guess it's to compensate for lag, but it's kind of a pain.

How is the online for the game? I'll be honest, playing single player would bore me on day 1 so the main reason I'd pick the game up is for the online multiplayer. Is the lag tolerable and how is the ranking system? Also can you use the Mario characters online or are you forced to use Miis like in Dragon Quest & Mario: Itadaki Street Wii?

I have another question for those who have the game. Is there any punishment for rage quitting? All competitive online games should do something to handle this problem, but Nintendo usually drops the ball. *looks at Mario Kart 7 communities*
I have played many hundreds of hours of Mario Kart 7 in various communities, and most matches end with my opponent(s) rage quitting. I am not exaggerating. It's disgusting. |

Which controls are you all using - Gyro sensor on or off? I thought that Gyro made the gameplay easier, but now that I read more about it in the manual, it looks like it's just for changing player perspective. I had Gyro set to off because I thought I saw somewhere that it made gameplay easier. Need to test this out now that I've played it more.

I can't believe Nintendo actually had the guts to release such a shallow game...then again, people seem to be buying it in droves, so good for them, I guess. Fool the mindless sheep, take their money, repeat.
What sucks the most is that Camelot made this, and they were one of my favorite developers under Nintendo. I LOVED every past Mario Tennis, but this is just pathetic. They didn't even try. A handful of tournaments and mini-games, one of the most shallow online elements ever to disgrace gaming, and customization for Mii's only? I didn't pay a single penny for the game and I'm still sad I got it. I was hoping this would be the next big 3DS game, but it's just a farce. It's like they said, "Well, since we have sucked with online in the past, our crazy, rabid fans will probably buy a new Mario Tennis for an online component, so let's just throw in some other things and make it seem like a complete package. They'll buy it anyway, because they have no self control". Shame on you, Nintendo. Also, I can't stand Gyro camera view. Classic view is the only way I will ever play.

Added after 10 minutes: I won an extended game in online but I lost 6 from my rating, has this happened to anybody else. The game went into to tiebreak.

People are using too many boos... Boos are kinda like a cheat, easy to get aces and easy to get the ball past players... It's annoying to play against someone playing as boo

I'm a tennis player in real life and it is one of my favorite sports. This is my first Mario Tennis game. I pre-ordered it, and got it the morning it came out. It felt natural to me although it is my first MT game. I tried Power Tennis on the Wii, the day I pre-ordered it. Open is better. xD If you wanna challenge PM me and i'll send my FC.

The lag actually isn't all the bad. Usually 8/10 matches have no lag. It depends on the time of day. When I play at 2 am or so, then yes, its laggy. Most likely because it has to search further away for opponents.

Two things I have to complain about:
1) They added in so many Super Mario Galaxy references but didn't make Rosalina a playable character. 2) The online matches suffer from a severe lag, and they get canceled altogether if there is just one tiny little shift in the Wi-Fi signal. If this is what Nintendo Network is going to be like, you can pretty much give up on the 3DS being an "online gaming machine."
