Default Which Pokemon Game is Your Favorite Version?

For my future review, I'd like to see which Pokemon version people like the best.
If you had to choose one version only, which one would you choose?
Please explain your choice below!

Highly subjective, but here we go.

Pok?mon Ruby (and Sapphire) was the game that really brought the main series out of its monochrome monotony, and gave the games its fun, colourful soul, and built the framework of the modern Pok?mon formula on top of the solid foundations set by its predecessors.

At last the music was no longer a series of piercing wails, locations were detailed, features recognizable and distinguishable, the general aesthetic feel of the series was finally coming into line with its accompanying media.

While the laudable physical/special split had not yet occurred, the game gave us the basic framework of the modern Pok?mon; including abilities, natures, battle mechanics, and the modern effort value system.

Aside from the improvements to the graphics and the tightening up of the battle/stats systems, the game also benefited from the inclusion of several new novel features, such as the ribbon rewards and contest systems which still continue in the following games.

On a personal level, I always found the character designs in the third generation to be the most pleasing. Brendan, May, and Steven in particular are very nicely designed and look good in-game and in accompanying media.

The Pok?mon introduced in the third generation are also some of my favourites, including the Ralts line, Nincada line, Aron line, Skitty, Salamence, Milotic, Metagross, Blaziken, the list goes on. All of which are the kind of aesthetically pleasing designs that the first two generations really struggled to bring to life with their limited capability for detail.

That's all I can think of right now.

The originals, Red and Blue, are still my favourite. I know that they have aged and seem clunky and colourless and all the games since then have improved and added more stuff and are therefore better, however it's more for nostalgic reasons and thinking back to how hugely epic they were at the time and how I felt playing them and how often I played them. At the time Red and Blue were the greatest thing ever to me, and I don't think I've put as much time into any game as I did with them, so they remain my favourites despite being bettered and upgraded over the years.

Crystal was the first Pokemon game that I owned so it'll always be close. So I voted for that one.
But I have to agree with the first response. Even though 3rd gen is a little odd compared to the first two, I was very happy with the changes and definitely saw it as an upgrade to the series at the time.
B/W would probably be around there too but I honestly haven't beaten it so I can't say, but I saw nice improvements to it. Some ******ed Pokemon, perhaps more than D/P/P but on a whole the rest were far more aesthetically pleasing than D/P/P.

Pokemon Yellow all the way. That game was awesome because you got a Pikachu that followed you around and all 3 starters. Soulsilver is a close second though.

Silver and it's remake Superior Silver. Pokemon games of the forever. Why? Well, nostalgia mostly. Though I do think the GSC games with their "Go to a whole 'nother region" thing is pretty spiffy. We got that once and haven't seen anything like it since.

I hope I didn't bother anyone by not including remakes.

By the way, I picked R/S. My first two games were Crystal and Ruby, so it was a bit of a hard decision, but I always like Generation III the best.

It's a hard decision for me. Gens 1,2,3 and 5 were all very good, and the remakes in gen 4 were awesome.

Pokemon Emerald was the first game I really actively played. If I play it now, however, I find it to be the worst of all pokemon games (well, Ruby and Sapphire are worse). Annoying music compared to the others, Rayquaza came too early, the worst new pokemon, etc.

I'd say Red and Blue.

Iv played all the main pokemon games since blue and red and I can honestly say that Black and White have to be my favorite of the series so far. I love the gyms, elemental monkey pokemons, and the story I love it all. Before these too I have to say that my favorite was Emerald.

Pokemon Emerald is my favorite because of it's colorful and nice Pokemon and its story. I had real fun playing that game. A close second would be Leaf Green/Fire Red mainly because I played many battles with friends on that version.

For me it's a tie between GSC and BW.

GSC had 2 regions, Red, and awesome music. BW had an amazing story and soundtrack, and the visuals were phenomenal. It's like they thought of everything.

To me, BW is the Skyward Sword of Pokemon games. That shows long development times can lead to great finished products. Can't wait for BW2!

If black and white 2 fixes a lot of the things that were missing or just bad it could potentially be in 2nd place for me. emerald holds an almost permanent favorite spot because of the varied/different types of areas, water areas as well, pokemon, music, and Brendan. Right now HG is 2nd place

Atleast Black and White has more than three dang levels.

Where are the remakes?
HG/SS are easily the best.
Crystal is my vote since there is no option for those.'

Edit: There is a second thread, pretty stupid to do that if you ask me.

HG/SS are easily the best thus far thanks to the streamlining. It baffles me that stuff like Running Shoes switch and Gym Leader rebattling aren't standard yet.

edit: why are there seperate threads for remakes

Because I can only put up to ten options for each poll, so I had to make a separate thread for the remakes or exclude them (which I could never do, being a huge nostalgia-freak).

Can't decide yet, with the new games coming out. If there wasn't new games releasing, I would have chose Pokemon Black/White

pokemon gold/silver/crystal (cause you have all kanto and johto), ruby/sapphire/emerald (amazing pokemons and great areas and places to explore) these are the best

My favorite will forever be Sapphire. (First Pokemon game I played)
So many reasons why I love this game, I just can't list them all. (I could, but I'm just too lazy to)

My favorite things about the 3rd generation was the music, and the character/pokemon designs. The music is still my favorite in the series, hands down. (Black and White music came second)

And the game overall was just such a huge step forward for the series. Sure it didn't have 2 regions like most were expecting, but it introduced so many great things, and.... it's just awesome XD

I wouldve gone with hg/ss since they are basically s/g/c but better. but i went with silver since thats the game its based on. and ive played it, lots of fun. My second choice would be r/s since one of those was my first pokemon game. Ive forgotten which one it was since i eventually ended up owning the other.

I grew up with Sapphire, so that generation is closest to my heart. Second place is easily the first generation, I spent a LOT of time on that, too.

I've been planning on buying Black or White someday, to see what the games are like nowadays.

Being able to replay Pokemon games is one of the greatest advantages to having a "device". I should get one. I'd like to replay Pokemon Diamond Version.

Honestly, I can't pick a favorite out of the 3, but I do like R/S better than Emerald because I prefer 1 main group of villians, Wallace as a gym leader, and Steven as Champion, and didn't care for the Battle Frontier. As far as legendaries go, I love both Groudon and Kyogre and both Lati's equally. Just for the sheer fact that I got Ruby first and still own that copy to this day, I'm going to say Ruby.

For the most part, I feel the exact same way.
I would pick Pokemon Emerald Version if not for the fact that the plot in it feels slightly more convoluted than in R & S.

Pokemon Silver all the way. Basically I would say every pokemon game BEFORE diamond and pearl. I'm sorry for the new players to Pokemon; But they lost their touch when they went to the DS. I still play the games, but every year I like them less and less. it really is a shame to see a franchise I grew up with go to hell like this, but what can you do? Also, they ruined the secrets in everything! What ever happened to making the legendary Pokemon a secret? Now they have the damn things pasted on the box art all over! Completely ruins it! And, to top that off, I hear they are making a B/W 2. Which essentially follows the same plot as emerald and platinum in the series. Hopefully they will turn this around. I wanna see New Pokemon and Better character art instead of the old, lame graphics that we had since diamond........

Not to be rude, but you complain about them advertising the legendary after saying your favorite is Pokemon Silver Version, which is one of the first Pokemon games to sport a Legendary on the cover.

But I'm curious as to why you disliked the remakes of Generation II (Pokemon HeartGold Version and Soulsilver Version), when they are essentially everything that made Pokemon Gold Version and Pokemon Silver Version both so excellent plus what is good in Generation IV.

Sorry~I forgot about the remakes, It's been awhile! I did like them , But I didn't like the additions of the new gen pokemon. They just seem Weird to me now. Also, Pokemon Silver was packed with Secrets besides Luigia! I don't really like the idea of a Black and white 2, because I knew what they were doing as soon as I saw Kyranga(Might be wrong with the name). The legionaries are Ying and Yang, they keep eachother in balance, when they seperate, chaos let's loose, Hence Black and white 1. Black and white 2 might be a prequel before they split, atleast that's what I am getting at..

The legionaries are Ying and Yang, they keep eachother in balance, when they seperate, chaos let's loose, Hence Black and white 1. Black and white 2 might be a prequel before they split, atleast that's what I am getting at..
BW2 are sequels, not prequels, though a prequel would be preferable.
Now, I've got to buy a GB Memory Card because I'm worried my battery in Pokemon Crystal Version is going to die, but it's worth it, 'cause it's one of the best.

I've heard, I never got to play it though. I have 2 Purple gameboy's and a classic white one, but the white one turns on, then doesn't play; And my silver and gold, can't save for some reason anymore, so I have to tape the game in.(As long as I don't take them out, they won't lose data.) I really am surprised my yellow still works though, must be because I got it when I was so young and didn't play it as much....

So, as long as you leave the game in the game-slot, it doesn't lose it's data? If that's the case, I may have to get a Game Boy Light just for my Japanese copy of Pokemon Gold Version.

Yeah, it works for me, as long as I keep it in my purple color, it will keep the save, if you take it out, it erases it.

OK!
So, did you see the trailer for Black & White 2? I think it looks like it'll be a combination of everything that made Generations 2, 3, and 5 so great.

Regardless of what comes next, I'm sure it will be accompanied by a cacophony of indefensible whining, baseless assumptions, and faulty comparisons.

Speaking of Wooper, I'm getting super excited at the possibility of a Hoenn remake.

Nothing would make me happier! I do hope that it would be specifically for the 3DS though.

Yeah, I'm going to go with Gold/Silver - especially the remakes. I really like the gym leaders, the towns, and that generation of Pokemon.

Plus having your pokemon follow you is awesome and not a feature in any other game (aside from Pikachu in Yellow) - yay for novelty !

I voted Yellow

I had both Red and Yellow as a kid and sometimes I miss playing against the original Pokemon.

I had Pearl a while ago and recently brought Black. I do by far enjoy the newer games however sometimes I do miss being able to throw out a Pikachu or being able to have your Pokemon follow you around haha

I also miss Team Rocket, because who else is going to protect the world from devastation and unite all peoples within our nation?

Interacting with Pikachu was quite a unique experience in the Pokemon games. While I loved that they brought it back in the Johto remakes, I hope it doesn't become common in Pokemon games. I like that each game has unique features, and bringing back too many of these unique features could make the series feel unfresh.

You got a point Toby....Not to change the subject or anything, but one of the reasons I hate black and white is because I literally spent a Year breeding and catching emolga's and woopers to find a shiny. And guess what? I got my first shiny ever, but it's a damn Garbage bag! I mean, What the hell nintendo? Your new pokemon are turning into mutant global warming/radioactive catastrophes. I mean, we have a Icecream cone, a garbage bag, a candle!, A goth girl, who become's taller!? When did we start catching little girls! I hope to God, Pokemon starts getting off the LSD........

Pokemon Black Version *dodges incomming hate*
From the original games, i would have to pick Yellow just because of the Pikachu starter.

After BW2 my fave is still Sapphire. I just got bored with BW2 after beating it. Even with all the extra stuff added, I just can't see myself playing much of it anymore.

I'm actually surprised about how much I enjoy Pokemon White Version 2. It's not my favorite Pokemon games, but it is my favorite original entry (as opposed to HG & SS, which are remakes) on the DS.

Silver version overall, though it barely beats Red. Silver was pretty much a new game, then a direct sequel to Red at the second half.

Plus, the final boss IS Red, or to make it even more special, your character in the original games. Amazing music tops out what I think is the best final boss of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3t6Y7zh1LU

You don't &%$# with Red. To clarify, I mean strictly Silver's Red, not Soul Silver. Replacing Espeon? GTFO.

I have no idea why he is Gold/Silver.
would be nice if we had an explanation but its still pretty cool that he was in the game.

Red is the most overrated character in any of the games. His team isn't even that great, although slightly better with espeon, just over leveled. It was cool battling the main character in the first games, but he's not like a god. Over half of the champion battles are more tough.

Out of all of the Pokemon games I've played (Red, FireRed, Emerald, HeartGold, White), I can easily say that HG/SS takes the cake. It's not an option though, so I didn't vote. :/

I liked Pok?mon Heart Gold just for the pokewalker, it was a great idea and I used it alot at work. I would actually go into the back room at work and would check it way too much. But i no longer have one and really should pick up that game again for another pokewalker.

I did really enjoy playing through Soul Silver when it was first released, mostly because it included two separate regions and 16 badges to collect in total, which was completely new to me since I never played Silver or Gold as a child. I also really liked having my Pok?mon follow behind my character, which is a feature I wish they'd use more often.

Though I feel like the inclusion of a second region actually had a negative effect as well. I felt like the level progression was excruciatingly slow and I didn't actually get the last form of my starter until around the 6th badge (which seems really late when compared to other Pok?mon games). I also found that my team was barley on the verge of becoming level-50 by the time came to challenge the Elite 4.

I haven't played B2W2 yet, but gen 5 is my favorite so far. Pretty much completely outclasses games from the older gens, and this is coming from someone who started playing Pokemon in 1998.

It's tough, but I have to say Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire. They were the first games that i really understood when I was playing, I played previous generations, but only on my older brother's account. When Ruby and Sapphire came out, I was in like 1st or 2nd grade, and I could actually read the story lines... for the 1st time I was able to learn what the moves were called!

While I have played/replayed just about every game in the series, I think I'll always consider Hoenn my home, and that is why Ruby and Sapphire are my favorite.

My top 5 would need to be:

Pokemon Red and Blue
Pokemon Yellow
Pokemon Crystal
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
Pokemon White 2.

I have a feeling this may change come October...

Gold and Silver. I pretty much liked how you could travel in two regions which made the game longer, plus nostalgia.

its between generations 3 and 6 for me, i havent played gen 5 (bw1/2) yet though
but from what i remember 3 was so fun with dens you could find, and talent shows, the music was good too, also one of my favourite pokemon were introduced in gen 3 (absol)
then 6 has pokemon amie and mega evolutions, and france/paris is a pretty cool place i want to visit eventually

after ive played all regions ill have another think about my favourite, but atm its between those 2

Well people are opinionated beings for one.

Logically, the best Pokemon games are Black and White 2 and X/Y the prior being the most refined, with the latter being the latest ones. However, people may like other aspects. For story, one may look to black and white, for content heart gold and soul silver. Perhaps one likes the music of red the best, or just really likes the art design of emerald.

The best experiences of Pokemon may have come from finding rare glitches in red, in comparison to playing a more polished X. The problem doesn't stem from that, it comes from bashing other Pokemon games and acting as if the one you like is the only answer.

Just my 2 cents.

You pick the game that you personally enjoyed the most. There's nothing else to it.

Because if a game can create nostalgic feelings, its a good game.

It's a toss up between Platinum and Black 2 for me.

I definitely put in more time in Platinum than any other Pokemon game and I loved the soundtrack for the game. Unfortunately it was still way too slow paced.

Well this is about your favorite game, not which game is the best

If I'm strictly picking from the voting choices and not including remakes like FireRed/LeafGreen or SoulSilver/HeartGold, then I'd have to pick Gold/Silver because of how much it got me into Pokemon to begin with despite starting with Blue when it came out. Gen 2 felt more balanced out and added more to the game like going back to Kanto after the Elite 4 and had a soundtrack that I enjoyed the most. I would've said Crystal, but I didn't play that until the past year.

The original Red & Blue will always hold a place in my heart, but for me it would have to be Gold & Silver. This was at a time when Pok?mania was at its peak and I was roughly 10 years old. No matter how much I love the series and continue to be excited about future releases, nothing can compare to the excitement I felt as a 10 year old having my first go in Johto. My first starter was Totodile, and the first 2nd gen character I caught was Hoothoot. I still own both versions, but the internal battery has died in both of them, along with my childhood memories... Now I've gone and depressed myself lol

Nostalgia adds to the reasons why its their favourite game. If nostalgia played no part in decision then arguably the best games are always going to be the new ones as nintendo are constantly adding features. How can you compare red and blue to X and Y if were merely talking features, graphics and gameplay? Of course X and Y will win that argument. Its all about what games shaped your love for the series.

ok after playing every generation from 3 (1 and 2 i played the remakes), im going to rate them in order, and ill be rating them on my playthrough in the past year

XY/SS tied first, X was the game that got me back into pokemon since i stopped around generation 4, probably my favourite part being you can pet your pokemon and give them cakes, then SS had the nostalgia of crystal on the GBC with updated graphics and music, also the pokemon 1st in your party follows you, oh and one of my favourite pokemon was introduced in generation 2 (umbreon)
LG second, mostly the same reason as SS
sapphire third, because it was still pretty fun, but it kinda lost most of the nostalgia i had when i 1st played it
platinum fourth, it was okay, kinda slow... the reverse world got me confused
white 1 is fifth (i havent played 2), i just wasnt really motivated to beat it idk why, but i had to so i could transfer my pokemon from SS to X
