Default What is the best character in Mario Tennis Open

So far I have been using Lugi but now he is sucking really bad with the harder characters. Are there any characters that are really good to use and why?

I use Bowser Jr. He has the perfect mix of spin, speed, and power for my style of play. He's a "tricky" type, but he's more "all around" with extra spin than "tricky". That's just me though. Boo is hard to control, but once you understand how to play him, online should be simple for you.

Luma and Boo are my favourites, they're pretty floaty/slidey and feel a lot different to the other characters, but they're good once you get used to it. I normally use my Mii however, because I can get the exact stats I like to play with.

Why do people make threads like this? It's just like Mario Kart 7. There is no best character. You can win with anybody. It's all about your style. That and just practice more. Just play whoever is your favorite. Luigi was the first character i ever played and i beat all the cups right off the bat. So yeah, just practice practice practice!!

I use my mii, but don't understand the crappy stat pie charts.

The more filled in the pie chart is with color, the more power/spin/move your mii has. So if you have a pie chart half full of color, you have half as much power a full pie chart has. I hope what I typed makes grammatical sense... It's 1 am...

Pie chart broken down.

Power is broken up into 3 categories
Serve (Red)
Stroke (Blue)
Volley (Yellow)

The more each of those colours fills up the power pie = more speed behind those types of shots (stroke being baseline hits and volley being net hits) i.e 1/4 filled Red 1/8 filled blue, 1/8 filled yellow means you're going to have a killer serve in comparison to your strokes and volleys. But your strokes and volleys will have equal amount of 'power'/speed behind them. And obviously the more you fill up your pie in this area the greater your overall power will be.

Spin:
Side (Red)
Topspin (Blue)
Yellow (Slice)

This one is a little confusing. From what I gather the more Blue and yellow you have = the stronger those types of hits will be i.e more blue means a faster topspin shot and more yellow means a faster slice shot. This also means (and I'm guessing here) that faster topspin also means that the ball will dip/arc more and slice will stay low/skid more. More side spin = more curve (like those crazy white yoshi/boo serves and hits).

Speed:

Top Speed (red)
Acceleration (blue)
Mobility (yellow)

Firstly speed has to do with how you move around the court and has no bearing on your shot speed. So with that being said red and blue are obvious. Yellow means how movable your character is when you're charging a shot (I'm guessing since luma costume has high mobility and luma moves around like crazy when you charge her shots).

Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But that's how I interpret the pie chart (you can also press X on the 3ds to pull up the break down of each pie).

also by curve for side spin I mean left and right curve for both topspin and slice shots

Added after 4 minutes:

OH and another thing in case you haven't noticed these stats also affect your chance shots.

More side spin = more curve on your lob, slice, topspin, dropshot chance shots.
More slice = stronger slice chance shot (spins out characters more/more chance of them screwing up the return)
More topspin = stronger topspin chance shot (pushes characters further back) and forces a weaker return.
More stroke = Stronger/faster smash chance shot and (I'm guessing here) more power behind your slice and topspin chance shots, but I can't confirm that.

Added after 7 minutes:

AND yes I agree there is no such thing as a best character. However there are better match ups against certain types. I haven't decided what is best against what yet but basic tennis principles would tell me that against someone like luigi any character that can force him to stay at the baseline (i.e power or tricky) will more than likely win. However in saying that skill/strategy will always play a big role as well.

Also beating the cups (singles) means nothing really in terms of skill, the AI is really easy. Doubles on the other hand is a whole other thing... I haven't bothered trying to beat doubles with everyone, once I unlocked the costume I left it at that cos your partner sucks

The best is Luma, has power and speed. Best in game and multiplayer.
