Default Mario Tennis Open's IP Lock: Japanese 3DS Players Screwed

Recently, I have been playing Mario Tennis Open. After I have gotten my Mii good gear, I decided to play online. Once I selected what mode and character I wanted to use, I waited for 20 minutes, and was unable to find an opponent. Upon further research, I realized that it was an IP lock that causes this. Dumb move, Nintendo, what if people are on vacation? People can solve this by changing they're region on the System Settings. However, Japanese players cannot fix this problem, as Nintendo FORCES Japanese 3DS owners (like me) to pick a Japanese area. So Japanese players are screwed out of playing Mario Tennis Open online, do to awful IP Lock, and the fact that Japanese people can only pick Japanese areas.

I really don't know. I guess Nintendo hates immigrants. :P
Well, I guess I'm not the only one. Yamihoshi.nl posted a topic about this annoying problem.

I live in the USA but I understand Japanese so I buy Japanese consoles and games since they are usually the superior versions. I was originally planning on buying Mario Tennis Open but changed my mind when I heard that the online play was restricted by region. Since my 3DS is Japanese, I wouldn't be able to play with people in the USA or Europe.

Well, now I'm really glad I didn't buy the game. I would have been so pissed to spend $80, only to find out it was a complete waste due to an online play block via IP.

And since the 3DS is region locked, I can't buy the USA version.

Dumb move, Nintendo. You don't want my money, so you won't get it. I hope you are happy.

It all depends on wether or not you have a Japanese 3DS. If you own an American/International one, it's just a minor annoyance to go and change your region whenever you go on vacation and want to play, and change it back for an accurate Streetpass profile. However, for a Japanese one, you really shouldn't buy it.

Good thing you didn't buy it. On the bright side, the offline mode and Streetpass mode work fine and is very fun, and reminds me of a portable Wii Sports Tennis with extra modes. However, with the lack of online for other countries, it's not reccomended for purchase.

The 3DS is doing better in Japan, so shouldn't there be more copies? Also, I am sure the reason for the region lock for online is because of lag, even with players in my own region it can lag a ton.

I did not say anything about how much copies it sold. I just said that there was an IP lock removing players who live in a different country than the 3DS' specified country from online play. Yes, even though the game might lag, there is no reason for Nintendo/Camelot to do this, as this is preventing people from playing the game online.

Additionally; the local multiplayer is also region locked as it is in MK7, and the European StreetPass function is incompatible with other regions as it is in SM3DL.

Why Nintendo persists with this belief that people from different countries should never meet, is beyond comprehension.

No I think region locking is the dumbest idea ever, it just make's companies more money, and who ever MADE the idea should be punished. It's stupid and greedy. But wait I forgot NINTENDO ONLY CARES ABOUT THERE $$$$$$$$. The japan head quarters had the balls to say the west sales aren't good enough. BECAUSE WE DON'T GET THE SAME GAMES -.-.

Dude. Your on a site that is for a Nintendo system, and you have the balls to complain? If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's that simple.

She was complaining about Region Lock, which, this topic is kind of about.

I know, right? The sheer gall of people who think purchasing a product gives them the right to be vocal about its problems and the poor decisions made during its creation!

Hell, if it makes them feel that bad then they should just un-buy the game right away, and keep their mouths shut so the things that Nintendo creates never get any criticism and their products never evolve, because we don't like change.

As if they would even need criticism , these entitled whiners should just suck it up and accept whatever they're given, because we all know that Nintendo never makes design choices that hurt itself or its consumers.

Nintendo knows what's best for us, because after all, they are infallible.

If your confused about my above post, it was a (failed) attempt to avoid an argument with her. I just hope it ends quickly so tnis won't get locked.

Well, dragged into another conflict. Alright, I'm sticking with PikMan and Tekka on this. Yes, you may have an opinion to dislike the game, but it is completely useless, and annoying to whine about it. If you dislike the 3DS, sell it. Sure, you won't get back all the money used to buy it, but hey, you still have something. Or, like Tekka said, suck it up.

No. Sarcasm detection failure. I'm taking the opposite view to PikMan, and I fully support the right to complain.

Sorry. It's really hard to tell when your serious or sarcastic. I just think she complained a little TOO much, and it seemed like it wasn't hating on just region lock but Nintendo too. But we all see things differently.

I thought calling Nintendo infallible would have been the clincher! Oh well... I will have to try harder in the future.
