Super Mario 3D Land Sequel?

Default Super Mario 3D Land Sequel?

Super Mario 3D Land was an amazing game. It saved the 3DS from it's launch drought, it utilized 3D better than any other game, and the level design was solid. But it wasn't perfect; the boss fights lacked diversity, the first 5 worlds were a cakewalk, and it lacked any multi-player features. I believe that Nintendo should make a sequel to Mario's first stereoscopic 3D adventure to improve upon it's flaws and make a better game. These are what the sequel should have:

#1. New game mechanics. In addition to challenges like 30-second time limits and Cosmic Mario, there should be newer mechanics used to give players a tougher experience. How about wind that pushes you in a certain direction? Maybe a level that is upside down, or other gravity mechanics (simple stuff, nothing too much like galaxy). Perhaps slippery ice platforms? These would make the game more interesting, with more level design potential.

#2. New power ups. The power ups in Super Mario 3D Land were great and well-balanced. There just weren't enough of them. Maybe a hammer flower to complement the boomerang flower? Perhaps an ice flower from NSMBW? Or maybe even a Yoshi Egg? Stuff like this would allow developers to add new challenges that require certain items.

#3. Multi-player. SM3D sorely lacked any cooperative/competitive gameplay. If a sequel were to be made, Nintendo should definitely include a co-op feature. It would probably be less chaotic than in NSMBW, since it is in 3D space and therefore less crammed. Maybe even optional side levels specifically designed for co-op. Speaking of side levels...

#4. A less linear adventure. No, I'm not talking about optional missions like in Zelda. But how about some side levels? Levels that appear off the main overworld map route, only unlockable by reaching a hidden flagpole. Kinda like in New Super Mario Brothers. It would be nice to have levels you could go back to later, that you aren't required to beat to progress. It would make the game's pacing a lot better.

#5. Better "special world" incorporation. I loved the special worlds in the original game, they added much needed challenge to the game without giving younger, less skilled players any issues. But I didn't like the way you only accessed them at the end of the game. It would have been nicer if they could be played before beating the game. In fact, Nintendo could have them appear off the main route, just like the secret worlds I mentioned before.

#6. Better boss fights. Not only were they not challenging enough, but they were all basically the same. Even though some had varying conditions (like spikes or fire coming from the floor), stomping on Boom Boom and Pom Pom gets really boring after a while. There should be different bosses. How about a Cheep Cheep that freezes you with it's breath? Why not let us fight a giant mummified Koopa? Or classics like Bowser Junior and King Bob-om? As fun as the castles/airships are, it's hard to find myself looking forward to the boss at the end of the level.

That about sums up my suggestions for now. If you have any feedback to these ideas or ideas of your own, feel free to post them here. Would you like to speed run against somebody else's ghost Mario via streetpass? Want more characters to play as, like Wario or Toad? Or do you even think there needs to be a sequel, and that the original game is perfect? Let me know what you think.

I pretty much agree with all you have said. I still haven't gotten 3D Land yet, but I'm waiting for a price drop because I have games that are higher on my priority list. I also think that the game could have lengthier levels. I know the short levels thing was a throwback to the original series, but a few lengthier levels (a level that takes 4 minutes minimum) might be better. I also think they should include a few more throwbacks like the Zelda-themed level.

That would be cool. Though there should be more subtle references. There needs to be more easter eggs. Like the UFO in the sky, or the ghost at in the graveyard.

Also, the levels could be just a little more open. Not on a Zelda standard, but more often than never I find myself seeing an area on a world and thinking, "I wish I could go there!" (i.e. the cliffs on the island levels, the graveyard in the Haunted House, certain areas of the desert worlds, etc.). Not necessarily out of bounds, but more areas to explore for hidden secrets (star coins, secret flagpoles, etc.).

If a 3D Land sequel were to happen, I'd want it more like Galaxy 2 and in the system's last year or two of life. Like Galaxy 2 as in, not totally a different game, but some new stuff. Although a 3D Land 2 would be nice, I'd gladly buy DLC worlds.

DLC wouldn't fix the problem of the repetitive bosses or linearity, but they could incorporate new gameplay mechanics, power ups, and characters through downloadable special-world packs. Maybe even a downloadable multiplayer. Probably not gonna happen though.

Personally I think they should just make a sequel, they have more room for new ideas and features. DLC has too many limits.

Oh dear god no. Not another Linear-Mario-with-fixed-camera fest. I'd rather have another Mario Galaxy, Sunshine or even another New Super Mario. (NOTE: I'm not saying your ideas are bad, but it being related to the horrible Linear Mario 3D makes it a no-no in my book)

I agree with DarkK.
SM3DL was alright, but I'd much prefer a sequel with different style of gameplay.

And I said his ideas are not bad. the problem is the "Super Mario 3D Land Sequel" part. The gameplay style of it was ripped straight from the Galaxy games minus the gravity changes and some of Mario's moves, the level design was linear as hell and I don't wanna see another Linear Mario 3D. He mentions "not a so linear adventure" in #4, but that's regarding the world map and not the levels themselves, which are more linear than New Super Mario Bros 2's levels.

I agree with most of the ideas on this thread. I've played this game a little since I got it yesterday and I love the setup of the different levels. One major thing like everyone has said is I don't want the sequel to be so linear either. I loved Mario Land 2:6 Golden Coins when I was a kid and I wish the levels were more setup that way to allow for more exploring of the world map and different themes.

Six Golden Coins and Galaxy 2 are both perfect examples of how sequels can be just as good (or better in G2's case) as the original. I'm sure a sequel to 3D Land would be fun, but all I ask for is 2-player co-op through Download Play.

If they go with the same route as the first one (Linear levels in 3D) then I'll pass, and I almost never say that regarding a Mario game.

If they made it different, it would only really be a sequel by name and not gameplay.

Which is why I said my problem is the "Mario 3D Land Sequel" part. You can make a whole different (and way better) 3D Mario game with the OP's ideas, why even link it to crappy Linear Mario 3D?

imo they seriously need to get rid of that invincibility leaf. sure, you could always not pick it up, but the temptation's there and the same game will have been experienced both as a challenge and a walk in the park by different people.

i understand why they included it, but they didn't make these kinds of concessions for younger players when i was a kid. and that made me a better gamer. will children of today be worse gamers than my generation?
i secretly hope so. lol

I'd just be happy with a second game with co-op/comp play. The only problem would come when they forced the same screen mechanic as they did in NSMB2.

That was a real blow for me.

I am of the opinion that I want a proper 3D Mario game, not a psuedo love child of 2D and 3D Mario games.

I want a game more akin to Super Mario 64. I want EXPLORATION in my game, a controllable camera, a fleshed out Mushroom Kindom rather than a bunch of "levels."

I'd like to see that as well.

No more Galaxy, 2D or linear 3D Mario. Just a full 3D Mushroom Kingdom exploration.

I've never played SM3DL, but I have watched a walk-through for it. I believe there should be a sequel because of how good it seemed, but not with the same style of positioning there was for the camera.

Galaxy was such a well-received Mario formula, I don't understand why Nintendo would want to stray Mario away from that path. While I loved SM3DL, (in the same way you love a younger sibling when they try really hard to impress you, and it's not all that great, but you still act impressed to make them feel good for trying) I would much rather prefer they use the same graphics in a different, non-linear type of Mario adventure.

I can understand the comments wanting for a less linear, more open world adventure, and to an extent that is what I would like as well, however I feel like that would be better suited for a home console. After all, the Wii U desperately needs some 3D marios.

However, portable gaming is different, it is meant to be played in shorter spurts. It's the kind of gaming where you are on the subway and you whip out your 3DS, complete a few levels, and after a few stages, put it away so you can get on with your routine. If I wanted a console-mario experience, I would buy a console and play that at home.

We can dream, but it'll probably be called "Super Mario 3D Land 2".
