Default The Official Manga Thread | Backwards Books for All

I know that there have been several anime threads on here but I thought I'd make a thread for manga.

Here some questions to get us started, I'll go first:

What was the first manga you read and/or bought?
+Anima

Favorite series?
Fullmetal Alchemist, Pluto, 20th Century Boys, Black Jack, Twin Spica (and lots more)

Do you have a manga collection? Post it!

First manga read: Dragon ball vol(idr)
First manga bought: Comic Party vol1
My favorite series is Naruto or Buso renkin
I have a collection at home, not my college dorm, and I'll proly post it later. I don't have nearly as much as OP (but it'd be cool to have that many.)
Notable favorites: Spiral, Fruits basket (thougtht it was weak for looking girly but fell in love with it), Detective conan, Guardian getten, any .hack//

I actually started to draw some of my own manga pages in the past. I haven't finished because of low motivation and being busy. I hope one day I can at least publish my own american manga some way.

I can't remember the first manga I read. I was a comicbook geek since nine years old. American stuff mostly but Japanese titles would occasionally cross my path. Being 29 this was back when it was hard to get your hands on manga and anime, trades were expensive and rare. You couldn't find the stuff in normal bookstores like you can today, even specialty comicbook shops wouldn't have a reliable supply.

Fist of the North Star, Appleseed, Akira, those were the most widespread back in the day. I read them all at some point before manga in the States as a separate thing really started to take off. Also I didn't really view them as a separate thing. They were like The Watchmen or other books you'd typically pick up in trades, they were just Japanese.

Today I'll still pick one up and read it if it has been recommended to me, but even if I have to flip them backwards (back in the 90s pretty much everyone was mirrored to read like a Western book) I still just think of them as comics. What trades I have are in storage with my old longboxes. I don't really collect or read comics must these days.

I think Naruto was the first manga I ever read, and the Ace Attorney Official Case Book Vol. 1 was the first manga I bought.

My favorite two series is One Piece and Toriko.

I can't really remember this, lol. I think it's Kungfu Boy (Chinmi).

Favorite series?
Now this is hard. I have so many! Well, basically everything written by Mitsuru Adachi and Naoki Urasawa, and then there's also Slamdunk, City Hunter, Rainbow (Anchan... ;_; ), and Boy Action. H2 in particular is my most favorite.

Do you have a manga collection? Post it!
It's in my folks' place.

I started reading with FMA and Shaman King about 10 years ago. I wanted to see how the manga differed from the anime but both were really disappointing. I wholly prefer the first anime of FMA to the manga and the SK manga was just nonsense.

Actually, I can't think of any manga I've read/finished that wasn't disappointing (which is why I stopped reading them): D.Gray-man, Pandora Hearts, Reborn, Tsubasa, 07 Ghost, Claymore, The Black Butler, etc.

But if I had to pick my favorites, it'd probably be the bolded ones. I like the dark fantasy slant of the first two, all of their stories were interesting before they became a mess, and they each have likable characters.

If you like Uzumaki, you should try reading GYO. It has sharks with mechanical legs powered by farts.

I've never heard of anyone preferring the anime over the manga. I find the original manga to be far superior since the anime got silly towards the end.

And lol Shaman King

They tried to introduce depth by placing the story on an international scale routed in political corruption. This just brought in a number of characters and locations that: A) they couldn't flesh out well and B) felt impersonal and disconnected to the story. The first anime kept its scope small, focusing mainly on a handful of people, and I think its better because of it.

I found the homunculi more interesting in the anime as well: most of the important ones shared a personal connection with the main characters and their origins were more interesting than just being the manifested emotions of some old guy who only looks like he'd be an interesting villain.

And then there was the whole gate, moon, god thing that just felt tacked on. Not saying the explanations for Dante's motives or what the gate is felt any less random but I preferred them. And the ending of the movie felt more satisfying than the one in the manga.

Fair enough. I suppose I should give the first anime another chance. I've only seen bits and pieces of it.

I prefer to watch the first twenty episodes of 2003 FMA and then watch from 8 onward in FMA: Brotherhood.

Ruroni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho started me off. I never really bought manga, except for the shonun jump magazine. All my friends had the full series so I would just borrow them from them.

First Manga: Pokemon Special/Adventures
Favorite Series: Fullmetal Alchemist, Pokemon Special/Adventures, Sgt Frog (Keroro Gunso)

You could say I have a collection. I've got all the Pokemon Manga box sets, the first nine volumes of FMA (in the form of three compilation books, each containing three volumes), Sgt Frog 1-2, and 5-12 (yes, I lack volumes 3 and 4, but I read them online), some of the Zelda manga, the Asch the Bloody manga for Tales of the Abyss, and a few Kingdom Hearts. (I'll see if I can get a picture later.)

All of the manga I own was purchased after already being familiar with the series. For FMA and Sgt Frog, I saw the animes first. For Pokemon, KH, Tales of the Abyss, and Zelda, I was familiar with the games.

Wow, that is an awesome collection! . You should create a library . I only have read one manga and that is the Dragonball Z series. I have most of them. I haven't read any others thus far, but I have always wanted to get into some of the others as I do like a few different Anime shows.

I already have a pretty impressive library of manga and novels. I <3 books.

Well, if you've read Dragonball Z then you should definitely read Dragonball.

Bump. Bump.

New manga of the month. Twin Spica. It's SO GOOD. Read it or die.

I've recently finished 20th Century Boys. It was quite a journey. I'm kinda disappointed that it's all over. D:

Urasawa's other work better get localized or I will punch.... something.

Good news is that Viz finally released Volume 15 of Pokemon Adventures over here. I've heard that Ruby and Sapphire are supposed to have the best story arc so I have high expectations.

I honestly can't remember the first manga I read but I do read quite a lot of manga up on mangareader and other such sites.

Fave mangas are:

One Piece
Berserk
Claymore
Gantz
Hunter x Hunter
Beezlebub
HSDK

I can't remember the first manga I read, but I know that the first two series I started to buy were One Piece and Inuyasha. I didn't really know what they were about at the time, but they looked interesting enough.

My father and I used to always drop my grandmother off at the airport every few months when she left to visit Puerto Rico, and that airport happened to have a little bookstore with a fairly extensive manga section. We made a hobby out of stopping by that store and buying one of each One Piece and Inuyasha every time we dropped her off at the airport. I got to about six or seven issues of both before discovering a nearby Borders and decided to start buying there instead.

Unfortunately, that Borders closed down a while ago, like most other book stores around my area, and I don't buy manga nearly as often now. I've been much more interested in watching anime lately.

Man, that stinks.

There's only one book store in my town that sells manga now. They have a pretty decent selection but unless they have a sale I usually just order from Amazon since it's almost always cheaper.

Cross Game (Don't be put off by the baseball theme. The characterization is well done and very down-to-earth unlike a lot of manga.)

Kitchen Princess (Cutesy story of a girl who dreams of becoming a chef and finding her "flan prince")

Pluto (Thriller about the hunt for a serial killer who is targeting the most highly advanced robots in the world.)

Gunslinger Girl (A tragic series about young girls who are turned into cyborg assassins by the government.)

Death Note is a great one as well. It's the story of Yagami Light, a highschool student who finds the Death Note, a notebook used to kill, and how he uses it to change the world to the better. It's a great read and is kind of sinister, dark. What I love about it is that it's not black or white, good and evil. It really shows how thin the difference between these is.
There's also an anime, which is better than the manga imo. It follows the exact same plot, no changes whatsoever.

I always thought Deathnote was pretty well done but I found Light to be a really unlikable character for obvious reasons. Didn't like the ending very much either so I've never bothered to reread it.

Death Note is a masterpiece! I've watched the anime twice and read the whole manga in the past 3 years. I loved the development of Light and even though he's not a likable character I found it exciting to see how his mind and way of thinking changed.
Spoiler!

eh, I don't really view it as a masterpiece. It's really good but it's not at that level in my opinion. I'm a huge snob about manga though haha.

About the ending:

I don't read manga at all. I prefer anime. I've read Death Note but the anime is definitely better. I think I'll start reading Bleach sometime though since the anime ended rather soon.

Yeah, if it's not japanese techinically it's not manga. But that artstyle is virtually the same as any manga, at least from the looks of the cover. I think the terms will be broadened to depict only the artstyle, not country of origin. Especially considering popular anime sites are listing Avatar: The Last Airbender and I think another one or two American shows as anime.

Finally managed to read through Honey and Clover.

I got to the end and I finally understood the title of the series I… my heart. THE EMOTIONS.

I loved how the Umino was able to convey how strongly the characters felt for one another without resorting to the old cliches that you usually see in romance.

And I was actually surprised by the ending. Usually I can predict what’s going to happen, but with Honey and Clover I really didn’t know how everything was going to be resolved.

Wonderful.

My current favorite Anime and Manga:

Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan / 進撃の巨人

Summary:
"The story centers around the life of Eren Jaeger and his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman, who live in a world where the remnants of the human population live inside cities surrounded by enormous walls due to the sudden appearance of the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures who devour humans seemingly without reason. Their lives are changed forever after the appearance of a colossal Titan brings about the destruction of their home and the death of their mother, spurring them to enter the army to battle the Titans themselves."

I've only watched the anime and Shingeki no Kyojin seems to be a masterpiece so far. Well thought characters and story, amazing action and the animation and art is the best I've seen so far.

Attack on Titan is on my to-read list but those titans freak me out.

I stopped reading manga. Every series I liked either didn't get finished or was super long. Plus, there isn't enough josei here in the US. Most are all one-shots. I like manga to be 3-10 volumes long. Anything more is a killer for me.

Tons. I haven't read any in a long time. I have several boxes full. I think I may not read manga anymore.

I liked Skip Beat but it got to be too drawn out.
Nana
A lot from the shojo beat line from Viz.
When TokyoPop fell, I gave up on manga.
I like josei more because it has more adult themes.

Yeah, they are a bit creepy but the story is pretty good, you should give it a try. I watched lots of anime and read lots of manga and I can easily say that Attack on Titan / Shingeki no Kyojin is the best anime & manga in the past 2 years.

I bought Shingeki no Kyojin / 進撃の巨人 / Attack on Titan Vol. 2 - Vol. 9 from Kinokuniya yesterday.

Volume 1 and 10 were out of stock. Anyway, I already read this manga up to vol. 11 online but volume 11 will be out in August (In Japan). The anime is currently up to eps 13 and it's really good so far plus the music & soundtrack are awesome.

The English volumes are coming out at a steady pace.

I wouldn't mind picking up this series now that several of the ones that I've been following for quite some time now have concluded.

Picked up the first 5 volumes of Attack on Titan.

It's pretty interesting so far.

Nearly every character is psychotic in some way but considering the world they live in... I can't say I'm surprised.

Truth is yeah, most characters, especially those with experience fighting titans, are psychotic in one way or another XD I've been following the anime for some time now and the plot is very interesting, though it gets a bit too slow at some points.

The best thing about Attack on Titan is that it's not just mindless actions. It focuses on politics and other interactions quite a bit and to me that makes it more interesting.

I was able to pick up the first few volumes of Tegami Bachi on sale and I ended buying the rest of the series.

It follows the typical shonen tropes along with some shota/loli but the setting, characters, and art are unique enough that I was interested enough to keep reading.

I also like its straight-forward approach to violence and death. Characters die very suddenly and unpleasantly which is reflective of genuine warfare despite it involving giant man-eating titans. Also, the characters react appropriately to trauma considering their experience and age.

Bakuman is a pretty interesting series. (not the cartoon tie-in, but the manga from Death Note fame) I'd recommend it if you're looking for a fresh series. However, I am wondering if they have made an anime yet? It also seems like I should read/watch Attack on Titan.

Actually, there are three anime series. (one series is equivalent to an American broadcast season) I think some of it was licensed and even dubbed, but the rest hasn't been distributed outside of Japan.

A friend recommended Sankarea to me:

It's.... different.

A paranormal romantic comedy. Its particular interpretation of the undead/zombies is something I haven't seen before. It has some kinky pics of young girls and a middle-aged man so that might be a plus.

I recently picked up a TON of new manga CardCaptor Sakura 1-4, Magic Knights Rayearth 1-2, Doubt 1-2, and Judge 1.

I'll give my thoughts on those later.

All right. Magic Knights Rayearth. A classic magical girl manga by CLAMP which was recently republished by Dark Horse.

It was a pretty entertaining read what's kind of jarring though is that the first half of the series differs a lot in tone from the second half. Most of the first half is "we're going to become magical girls and save the princess!" then there's a dark TWIST at the end. Second half is "everything is terrible. what are we going to do?"

Picked up Doubt as kind of an impulse buy. Similar to 999, it's a story about a group of strangers thrust into a twisted game where they have to find the "wolf" among them before they are all murdered. I guessed the true mastermind early on but there were a few twists that got me. It's completely available in english in 2 omnibus volumes.

The sequel, Judge, also seems promising and is currently in-progess. Similar premise but it has the "contestants" judging each other based on their sins.

I finished reading Card Captor Sakura a couple weeks ago.

Definitely a classic and a must-read for anyone who loves magical girls and similar themes. It has a good deal of romance but it's all approached very innocently. It's also one of the few manga I've read that approaches same-sex relationships well.

Nice collection, Kinvara.

If you like Naoki Urasawa's works (since you have both 20th Century Boys and Pluto) then you should try "Monster".

Aaaah. Yes, I want to pick up Monster but it's out of print and that makes certain volumes expensive and it tends to be ridiculously priced on ebay, amazon, etc.

Now, I'm just hoping for a reprint or something. :/

I just finished reading Children of the Sea (5 volumes total).

The art is gorgeous and since I loved the ocean I felt obligated to pick it up but it's so freaking weird.

Grabbed the first volume a week or so ago at Barnes & Noble after remembering this post. I just received the second volume in the mail today and finished it. I enjoyed it quite a bit, it was definitely one of the most suspenseful things I've read. Not quite sure how I feel about the ending, though... It almost felt like there was too much revealed too quickly. Might just be because I read it in one sitting, I suppose.

Glad you liked it! Judge is by the same author so definitely look that up some time.

Also, there's a manga that is basically a re-imagining of the console wars between Sega and Nintendo during the 1990s and it is now being published in North America by Seven Seas.

Segua Kingdom vs the Ninteldo Empire. Very subtle.

Mahouka Kouko no Rettousei Anime was announced at Dengeki Bunko Fall Festival 2013 last month.

Thanks to Dengeki Bunko, I will be able to watch Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei in action next year >__>

Some of you might have known that it's my favorite light novel at the moment so I am pretty happy to see that the anime was announced. The manga is currently ongoing.

I feel this is a good a place as any to put this.

So Masashi Kishimoto has officially announced that Naruto has entered the final phase of its story. For those of us who follow the manga, this fact has been fairly obvious for a while now. Still, it's nice to have confirmation. Young me may have been saddened by this news, but older me understands that it'll be good to have some closure on the series. Still, a few manly tears will be shed once the story does finish.

Picked up a couple more series:

A Centaur's Life is pretty much a slice-of-life high school manga with monsters instead of humans. The author goes into some detail about the history between the monster races and how their body types affect their daily life which is interesting. It's rated Older Teen because there is one part where the characters have a "What's happening to my body?" puberty discussion but other than that it's completely tame.

Wandering Son chronicles the lives of two transsexual children- Nitori who was born a boy but wishes to be a girl and Yoshino, a girl who would rather be a boy. It's rare to have any kind of media tackle transsexualism at all but this manga does it quite well.

Well, I'm trying my best to read all the manga I've bought but I ended up buying yet another series.

No. 6 is a sci-fi novel series that has been adapted into an anime and also a manga. As far as I know, there are minimal differences between the versions. No. 6 is a utopian city surrounded by walls. The main character, Shion, stumbles upon one of the city's dark secrets and is forced to flee to the surrounding slums with the help of escaped convict, Nezumi. It may not be the most unique concept but the cast are all likeable so I'm enjoying it. Also contains violence and gay romance.

The Another manga is actually an adaptation of the novel of the same name. Koichi transfers to a middle school out in the country but after talking to a girl no one else claims to see- he realizes that Class 3 has been afflicted with a dark, horrific curse.

It's all available in one volume so I got to sit down and read the story in full. It didn't have a dumb cliffhanger ending plus the supernatural elements weren't overdone either. Very solid. I'm now interested in the anime adaptation.

ooo ooo ooo

AAAHHHHHH

Naoki Urasawa's Monster is getting a reprint!!!!

I will never stop posting in this freaking thread.

Kodansha published a new translation of the Sailor Moon series so I read it all (including Codename Sailor V and the Short Story Collections). Some arcs were better than others but all-in-all it was a solid read. Sailor Uranus was my favorite. Also, the new Sailor Moon anime will be coming out so there's that.

I bought Natsume's Book of Friends awhile back because there was a sale and a friend recommended it to me.

Natsume is an orphan who has been alienated from the rest of society because of his ability to see yokai (Japanese monsters). He eventually moves in with distant relatives and finds a book owned by his grandmother that contains the names of hundreds of yokai, which granted power over them. Natsume vows to return all the names in the book to make up for her grandmother's cruelty.

Venus Versus Virus is a relatively short series at only 8 volumes long. It's sort of a magical girl series with demon hunting and lesbians. If you enjoyed Puella Magi Madoka Magica, then you'll like this.

Another short series, Mixed Vegetables, is a cutesy shoujo manga about the daughter of a pastry chef who wants to work with sushi and the son of a sushi chef that wants to be a patisserie. Romance plus food. For fans of Kitchen Princess.

I've mentioned Gunslinger Girl before but now that it's completed I've read through it again. It's a rather depressing series where young girls that have suffered terrible physical injury have their memories wiped and are given a second chance at life as cyborg assassins by a secret government agency in Italy. The series ends on a bittersweet, poignant note. (15 volumes)

oohooh. I've been meaning to pick that up. The artist is the same person who did the designs for Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Also, interview with Takehiko Inoue:

Author behind Slam Dunk and Vagabond. I think he's one of the best artists in the manga industry today. Very distinct style.

It's pretty good and relaxing, and so is the anime. It's a wonderful show to chill out to

And some more again. Madoka Volume 1 and also Kurenai Volume 2 which is most likely somehow rare.

Found it in a random bookstore.

P.S. The finnish Madoka translation is garbage as expected.

I didn't even bother with the Madoka manga.

It just looked like a watered down version of the anime.

I ended up putting up some of my manga on ebay. Not sure if I'll be able to sell them but it would be nice to have some extra cash.

And that it is. The pacing is ****, it moves way too fast, the art is garbage (why didn't they hire Ume-sensei to do it? It was her character designs anyways).

The only good thing in Volume 1 was that

Spoiler!

I had almost given up hope of ever reading this but I found a reasonable ebay listing for the complete series. Hurray!

After School Nightmare follows Mashiro Ichijo who presents themselves as a boy but is actually neither male or female. To add to Mashiro's problems, they must attend a strange class in order to graduate from prep school. Every Thursday, Mashiro enters a nightmare world where they must compete with other students and the victor is allowed to graduate.

Considering its subject matter, the series gets surreal but never to the point that it's incoherent. It also has an interesting twist at the end that you probably won't see coming unless you're familiar with certain Japanese colloquialisms.

(As a forewarning, several characters must deal with the aftermath of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse so I wouldn't recommend this series to young readers or those who are triggered by those subjects.)

The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito is a short, creepy read.

A classic. I love Junji Ito's work. I wish more of his stories would get localized.

It contains some body horror in it. So don't say I didn't warn you.

Gosh, I've been so behind on my manga reading lately because of school but now I finally have the time to read again.

In other news, the first arc of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is getting localized:

Would have preferred original volume cover for the west since Araki can't draw his old characters at all but w/e

Just take my word when I say that Jonathan in the real manga won't look anything like what he looks in that picture

I actually picked up all of the Dawn of the Arcana a long time ago but I didn't have the time to read it until now. If I had to describe it, I guess I would say it's a Diet shoujo version Game of Thrones. The ending felt a little stilted but it was still an entertaining read.

The Ancient Magus's Bride

Chise is bought as a slave by the inhuman mage, Elias, but instead of becoming his servant- Elias tells her that she is now his apprentice... and will eventually become his bride.

I've read all the chapters that are out currently. It deals heavily into European folklore so if you're a fan of that it's definitely one to check out.

Finally caught up with One Piece after being away for a bit and I'm so ****ing happy we're almost done with Dressrosa. I'm ready for another adventure already. Give it to me now, Oda. Also, I always enjoy the Strawhat escapes. They're just so fun.

I'm interested to see if he does anything special for chapter 800.
A few chapters near the end of Dressrosa felt like he was deliberately padding out the arc to hit that number.

One Piece chapter this week lol. Everyone was strawhat.dolan Looks like Luffy might finally get the fleet he deserves. Though I wonder if he'll actually let them join. I can't think of any real reason why Luffy wouldn't let them but I dunno how Oda feels about having to work that many people into the story. Too bad we have to wait 2 weeks to find out. Oda takes more breaks than a chain smoker at an office. Oh well.

Hahah. They damn well better. I'm not gonna let Oda keep slacking just because he has to write all that. Now the question is: how many childhood friends died from falling down the stairs?

I've been rereading Yokohama Shopping Log and it's still the nicest, most mellow thing I've ever read, and I totally recommend it to all of you guys if you're up for a quiet countryside slice of life.

There's unfortunately no formal English release of it but there's an older scanlation that still holds up decently and a HQ rescan project going on right now if you'd like to take a look at it.

Hope you enjoy it.
It's not my favorite comic of all time but it's definitely somewhere in my top 5.

Nausicaa is probably my favorite manga. It's definitely influenced my taste and personal work the most, at the very least.
One Piece, Dragon Ball, Yokohama, Akira and Battle Angel Alita all fall somewhere after it, but don't ask me to list them in any order.

Finally caught up to One Piece after a short hiatus on my part. **** is getting good, y'all! So many different plot threads moving at once. And I love that Oda can still manage to amaze us with his world building after all these years. The sense of wonder and awe I felt when I saw that giant elephant carrying an island is classic Oda. Just like the first time I saw Water 7. We're not even on the freaking island yet and i'm already amazed. Can't wait to see what adventures are waiting for the Straw Hats on Zou.

PS: Robin being totally in love with the badly drawn dragon is just so adorbs I can't stand it. Best waifu.

I'm going to pick up the One Punch Man manga soon. It's gotten some great reviews on both the story and art.

Are you going to read the physical tanks? They have lots of fixed art but they also removed all the parts with the famous "animation pages".

Physical tanks? Tell me more.

If the us published editions removed stuff, then I'm not getting them.

Haven't read it but I've read Kaori Yuki's other work such as Godchild and Angel Sanctuary. Her stuff is gothic-shoujo and she tends to deal with a lot of controversial themes such as religion, incest, familial abuse, and suicide.

If that doesn't appeal to you, then you probably won't like any of her series including Alice in Murderland.

I don't mind that stuff at all. How's the other stuff from her? Is it decent levels of it or is it just going out the way for the sake of edginess

eh, it's not a "edgy" thing- more about the tragedy ala Victorian melodrama.

I'd recommend picking up the first volume or two of Godchild (which is one of her most well-received series) before getting Alice in Murderland- just to see if you like her style.

Godchild has similar themes to Alice, it has concluded, plus the manga itself is cheaper.

Might as well post a picture of my current physical collection since I stopped updating my purchases at some point

Spoiler!

Hunter x Hunter v1-v31
Madoka v1
Ace Attorney Investigations v1-v4
Tonari no Seki-Kun v1-v3
D-Frag v1-v5
Yotsubato v12 (in finnish)
GTO Shonan 14 Days v8 & v9
Gintama v1 & v2
Hidamari Sketch v1-v7
Toriko v1-v2
Nichijou v1-v2 (in finnish)
Basilisk v2 & v4
Ginga v1 & v16 (finnish)
Weed v1 (finnish) & v2 (japanese wut)
Chi's Sweet Home v3 (finnish)
Ganmu v2 (finnish)
Orange Planet v2 (finnish)
Not pictured: One Punch Man v1

The last books are a complete mess because my sister randomly found manga from a flea market, bought them and just dumped them to me. I usually never buy finnish translations since they're super corny.

Currently got Basilisk v1 & v3 arriving in mail, also Hidamari Sketch v8.

All I own is the Nausicaa hardcover collection, Der Mond: The Art of Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and all six volumes of Akira. Looking to pick up the hardcover Uzumaki book soon.
I can't afford to get 10+ volume series'.

Basilisk v1 and v3 arrived. Only then I realized the ones my sister got were in finnish. I figured, oh god, switching between finnish and english every other volume, this gun b confusing.

Then I realized... EVERY SINGLE ONE IS IN FINNISH

I'm going to pick up Planetes first (by the same author) because it's only 2 volumes plus it's finished.

(I've read the first 2 arcs which makes up the first fourth of the series. haha)

One Piece is not a serious adventure. The main reason I read it is because of how weird and comedic the whole adventure is.

The main negative is that the series is LONG (80 volumes currently) and still going. It has a lot of the typical shounen tropes but it's so quirky that it tends to avoid predictability.

I figured it was quirky and comedic, because I think that's probably what attracted me to it, besides it being THE most popular manga currently lol. But I think the fact that I'm starting late (but not really considering the creator's plan for the series), was a little intimidating considering the volume count.

I see what Kin means now about the English OPM manga not having the panels that animate. For example the scene where Sonic jumps around in the forest is like one big art splash instead of the cool panel by panel thing the Japanese version does.

That's not an issue with the english version, the edits are present in all of the tankobos in all languages. The animation pages are only in the webcomic.
You might notice that the anime also adapts the volume versions of the scenes instead of the webcomic ones (f.e. Saitama vs. Genos)

Good to know.

The physical releases still have tons of improved art in many scenes that weren't fixed in the webcomic. It's your call, really.

Selling some manga on ebay to free up more shelf space.

I recently got into Shigeru Mizuki's work.

I finished his "History of the Showa Era" series and it was a pretty good intro to Japanese history if dry at times.

The personal anecdotes were what kept me interested.
