I just lost it when he sat on the bench. Like, wut? And it was great to finally see Gogoat in action. This game is looking amazing so far, and I'm diggin' that box art.

I hope you can ride any Pokemon like that.

Imagine an eerie shadow emerging from the sunset... A man, riding his faitful Jigglypuff.

Added after 2 minutes:

And why do I love that Fletchling so much?

I wouldn't think that you'd be able to ride any Pok?mon, but I certainly hope there will be more options than only Gogoat. His design is cool and all, but I've never been a fan of Grass-type Pok?mon and I wouldn't want everybody to be using Gogoat in their team because they can ride him.

I like how such a trivial thing like free movement in the overworld instead of 4-way D-pad controls totally sold me on this game. I was sure that they'd botch it up just for the nostalgia.

Pokemon Y version for me. :3

ive never been more excited for a pokemon game than this. based on the earlier videos, it looked like you could only walk using the grid. but alas, I see gamefreak rustled our jimmies and we can indeed walk freely. WE ARE FREE FROM OUR GRIDDED MOVEMENTS!

I can't wait to see what kind of costumes we can get. This will be an anxious 5 months indeed. Sapphire version might have a run for its money for me, but we'll see.

Free movements!? Ok this could be one of the greatest Pokemon games ever. There's so much new stuff that so many people have probably hoped right from the beginning, and the graphics are pretty amazing, and so far it seems that they've succeeded in stuff.

Except bottle-opener-Mewtwo.

The new Pokemon look horrible. Why can't they just give up already?

This game needs more innovation, they need to show more about streetpass/spotpass, NN, etc.. As far as now, none of the new Pokemon are cool IMO such as Sazandora and Reuniclus where then, and also, this game needs more Salamence!

Wait wait, has it been confirmed we're off of a grid? Because the times in the video where it appears they're walking diagonally may just be a rotating camera -- Sort of like Skyarrow Bridge in Black and White.

Also Colosseum and XD. Poor games. Nobody ever thinks of them. :'(

I'm pretty sure it's not completely grid-free. Go back and watch the first trailer. Either only the city is grid-free or they did a good job with the camera angles to make it look like it is. Gamefreak would have blatantly shown off free movement in the trailer if it existed, but there's only one part where the male character moves diagonally from what I saw.

There are two instances in the video where the characters slightly change the angle in which they're walking, 0:16 and 0:18.

There is also a screenshot of our male hero looking in a diagonal direction.

Even if it isn't completely grid-free, it's pretty obvious that you can move diagonally from one space to the next.

Could be during an animation of the character turning. The obviously grid-based plants, sharply cornered paths, and him being parallel with the girl on the left make me think it's still grid-locked.

Why do you think this would be the case? This has been standard fare in 3D games for years upon years, it's not the kind of thing you'd show off as new and innovative even if it's never been in a main series Pok?mon game before.

The trailers for Black and White heavily emphasized the 3D environments and cutscenes, which were new for Pokemon.

Because this is still pokemon and it's the main series. It's going 3d, but they are still using the same over view camera style the majority of the time, and every shot shown has the character going, right, left, up, and down...except one going diagonal. the screen shot of the guy standing diagonal probably is just him facing the diagonal direction to the southwest while standing still. There is nothing to indicate that it is full free movement like colosseum. The clip of the city part clearly makes it similar to how castelia was in terms of walking in a lot of angles at one time to give it a 3d illusion.

So your reasoning is, "movement is a notable feature because Pok?mon". Got it.

Also this isn't the same way Castelia city was handled. In Castelia the city is moved around the sprite. At 0:16 you can clearly see the main character shift direction while the orientation of the city remains static.

Has it been confirmed to have free movement? I was thinking that it looked like it was still based on a grid. I watched the video multiple times and tried to pay attention to 0:16, as you said, but it still doesn't seem like that was a "turn" that the player made. I felt like the grid just turned diagonal for that section to avoid you walking directing into the wall.

I mean, it's possible that it could have free movement and it would be pretty neat if it were, but it just doesn't look like it (in my opinion, anyway). I also just thought it was something to do with the big city's layout, similar to Castelia City.

Of course it's not confirmed, we would all know if it was. However, we have no definitive evidence to prove either. Other than grid based fauna, which has been a mainstay of the Pok?mon series since its inception, we have only seen characters run in straight lines, except for these two very brief instances when the character slightly adjusts their direction.

Also, what wall? The only thing he was approaching was the sidewalk.

Yeah, these screens indicates free movement pretty well:

Also, as far as accessories and gear go, all I need is a skullcap/beanie and some shades on my face and I'm good.

It doesn't move it's whole body in another direction though, just turning to look around. it can just be an animation without you actually being able to move literally every single angle with the slide pad. My reason also has to do with evidence seen.

ya I think it's still on a grid, but moves like the 3ds mystery dungeon game. that had diagonal movement.

The shadows are the exact same, while he is facing excact opposite diagonal directions. If you move move in every single direction, then they wouldn't have am extremely convenient shot of the MC moving in exact opposite directions.

The angle of the run shifts, that is moving the whole body and not the camera. The evidence is right there. Briefly, but it exists.

@Rentaline Thank you for the diagonal running shots, I had missed them.

The shadow should stay pretty much the same. The sun isn't going to revolve 180 degrees around the earth every time he turns.

Why are we using science to explain Pokemon anyway, lol.

Plus you can see that the shadows are the same for all characters, no matter which direction they're facing.

I guess it could solely be diagonal movement. In most of the footage, the trainers turn pretty sharp, so that may indicate there's a grid there. Thinking about it more, why would there be a tile for each patch of grass if there weren't a grid?

Anywho, as far as other features go, I'm thinking we'll get a screen capture feature. TPCI made a statement a while back similar to "feeling more connected to other players" or something, so maybe we'll be able to share some photos and whatnot. Oh yeah, and remember in the first trailer when it looked like someone could have been following the pc? Maybe that was another player with different accessories in some sort of multiplayer mode.

Regardless of the shadows, the MC is clearly going in only one set diagonal plane. And going to that shot int he video again. You can clearly see right when the character turns, it happens right along the curve of road, which would make it just like how it was in castelia. The difference is the 3d graphics, which are enhanced to enough to give the illusion that the character himself turns. Not to mention that he turns sharply on a dime, and then is going exactly one direction again. If it was free movement, I'm almost positive you would see the character move slightly in a few minor other directions because with the slide pad it easily turns even with only lightly touching it.

I don't know how many different ways I can say it. It's not an illusion, *he* turns. If it were an illusion, like Castelia, the city would turn around him.

[ strikeout ]Also, after he does turn, he starts running at slight angle away from the sidewalk. Meaning he's now running across the road at this angle.[ /asdf ] <- Scrub that bit, I'm wrong there. D'oh. Or am I? It looks like he's turning to that angle, but it's so short I can't tell.

At 0:22, similarly to what I mentioned above, our heroine is slowly getting closer to the road, and not following the curve of the street on a rail.

I realize that it's too early to lay any kind of claim to omni directional movement, but I also don't want to discount the possibility yet.

Honestly, I'd be pretty happy with just being able to walk diagonally (similar to the Mystery Dungeon games). Free roaming would be pretty cool, but I just feel like the grid works really well for the handheld Pok?mon titles. And with the nature of the Circle Pad in mind, being able to walk diagonally might be rather beneficial. Using the Circle Pad for White 2 was a bit of a pain at times and I often found myself switching back to the D-pad.

However, this title is looking amazing from what we've seen so far and I'm sure I'll love it regardless. I couldn't care less whether it was free roam or grid.

Using the Circle Pad for White 2 was a bit of a pain at times and I often found myself switching back to the D-pad.

However, this title is looking amazing from what we've seen so far and I'm sure I'll love it regardless. I couldn't care less whether it was free roam or grid.
I completely agree, but it's fun to have these debates. Or am I just alone in that sentiment? X3 Haha.

I'm gonna get my character a fedora and become euphoric.

Not at all! Debates are always fun and it's certainly interesting to see things from other perspectives. Like, I never even thought about the possibility of this game being free roam until I saw people talking about it in this thread. I just figured the in-city turns as being something similar to Castelia City and never gave it another thought.

And I'm not sure how I would want to change my character. I honestly like the default look of the male trainer, but that's boring. If there's customization options, I'll definitely have to take it.

I'm gonna guess that you can get clothes from characters from previous games like Red's Hat or something

I just hope they make us look like the actual hero trainer to other players. I always hated having to choose between random trainer classes (like Ace Trainer, Hiker, etc). And that leads to my second point; I also hope there are multiple versions of the same trainer class, outside of just male or female. It's not nearly as fun when you go through a cave and see 6 of the same exact male hiker. I don't mind seeing doubles occasionally (because that's unavoidable), but some variety would be nice.

Come on, 3DSForums. Somebody out there, please.

Anyway, the more I look at this, the more it looks like the movement was a player action rather than a scripted movement.

i can see that one little nudge as he slightly turns. That doesn't seem like it's part of a script.

Eh, whatever, I don't believe in any Way that there is full range movement at all, And just diagonally. If there is, I'll eat my words. If not, then touche.

I'm cool with just diagonal. I just want to be able to use my circle pad without feeling awkward.

The game is made for the 3ds, so I'm positive they will impliement the slide pad perfectly.

I was a little on the ropes with this game but now looking at the great progress in the game my fears are settled.

Though, it irks me watching them walk on those short stubby legs.

The two other options instead of a dragonal movement is that you can switch the camera angle (which I see more realistic since why the heck would you be looking at the boy's face while you're walking?! The other is that when you are on the street and the street changes direction you change direction too, as it had happened in many past games (one of them being PB2) so you can make your conclusions

So I just noticed:

The girl in the top right looks to be the female protag with a different hairstyle, so we'll probably be able to customize that as well! Either that, or our protags just start off wearing clothes that other trainers wear.

And the girl standing above the male protag is the same one that was following him in the first trailer.

I was thinking that too. The clothes remind me of the Beauty class from the other games.

Yea, I just noticed that too. I wonder if both the girl above and the one to the top left are both also other people playing in a multiplayer thing, or if they are just npc's.

All I want from the character customization is a top hat, monocle, a beret, a trucker cap, a lei, bright green shorts, neon pink socks, a three piece suit, a bowtie and red cowboy boots.

I wish you could wear those at the same time...

I'm not exactly 'psyched' but...I'd say I'm a bit stoked, pumped, ignited, riled, jimmyrustled, ecstatic, harmonized, pokecited, alskdfjals for this to come out!.....but yeah, just a little excited.

I totally lost it at jimmyrustled. xD

I also thought about being able to change the camera angle, since it would make no sense that the camera would be centered on the character's face while running through the town. I'd imagine that it'd be pretty difficult to travel around a large city if that was the case, and it'd be a huge pain in the butt. Could it be possible that they edited the camera's coding to make it have that angle for trailer purposes? Maybe they've used that angle at a certain part and they changed it shortly to make the trailer more dynamic? Just a thought.

And by the way, I'm really diggin' the way the speech bubbles look.

I certainly hope we have control over the camera. It'll be a lot more fun to be able to get a look at all the new locations at different angles. Plus it wouldn't be the first game where you could run toward the camera if you had control over it.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how I would feel about having complete control over the camera in a Pok?mon game. I'm sure I would enjoy it, but I feel like I would end up getting myself totally confused when running through cities and routes. I normally have a terrible sense of direction and being able to spin an entire cave might really throw me off. It would definitely take some getting used to and I'm not sure how often I would actually use it, outside of just admiring the looks of an area.

It could result in some interesting placements for hidden items. Like, maybe they could hide a Pok?ball behind a tree and you couldn't tell it was there unless you rotated the camera (or ran into it by accident)? I think I'm just throwing stuff out there at this point.

I think if they did add camera control, they would limit it. In the trailer there are a few instances where it seems like the character controls the camera, but then in other scenes (like the forest and routes) it looked like a fixed camera. So maybe they either added limited camera control, full control where you can make the camera top down traditionally or free which ever way you like, or no control and the camera dynamically moves like in castelia.

You're right, of course, it does seem likely that it would be mixed. Even free camera games can have fixed camera segments when necessary.

So judging from the footage shown on Pok?mon Smash, it appears it is on a grid after all. So much for my dreams of a free camera.

Pok?mon is serious business.

Though it might surprise you to learn that of all the game features I care about, how we can walk is close to the bottom of the pile.

If questing and hours of in-depth story driven content are what you're looking for... You should switch to another game.

Well, I spent about 80 hours playing through the main story and extra content for White 2 and I have almost 130 hours clocked now that I finally feel "done". If you ask me, that's pretty incredible for a portable game. I've never been concerned about length when it came to a main Pok?mon game.

I've paid full retail price for console titles before and had them be over in less than 10 hours, and that's disappointing.

25 hours tops to play through the main game. After that it's all about the grind.

Well, I believe it took me around 35 hours to actually collect the 8 badges and defeat the Elite 4 in White 2, but there was plenty of other things to do afterwards. A large portion of Unova was still unexplored at that point. The White Treehollow alone took me two hours or so once the later floors started to get more complicated, and I never even bothered to mess around with the PWT or the Pok?Cinema stuff.

I also switched the difficulty to Hard right after beating the Elite 4 and I'll admit that some of the initial battles were a bit difficult and had me running to the Center often, so that could've contributed to adding another two hours.

I think it might have took me like 40ish to beat the game. But then again i was playing a nuzlocke and catching one of each pokemon to fill up my dex. I played a bunch of the PWT, but didn't really like the pokestar stuff. I spent over 250 hours so far on this game, though a lot of it is breeding, training, and dexing.

The gameplay hours might be skewed this gen because we don't know how long cut scenes will be for one. Like imagine the team plasma ones and the kyurem fusion one from bw2...but bow like way more. I'm expecting it every two seconds, but even having 5-10 more of those adds time.

Wouldn't it be weird if I say that if Game Freak predict that none of us would choose a certain Pokemon then created a super-cool final evolution stage where everyone will have to start over again just because they made a wrong choice. It could happen... Frog lovers any one? That aside, I think Pokemon is totally not gonna ditch the Grid System because it would kinda ruin a lot of things in the game. Roller Skates might replace the Running Shoes and Gogoat's ability to give you a ride seems like a gimmick to me. I hope they'll make new kinds of Pokemon instead of slapping a few new then just add a whole lot of oldies. A revamped Pokemon battle scene, now that's what I call a good change of pace. Hopefully, Online features will be greatly improved here. Poke Plaza Online seems to be a great way to interact with different people. Online Battle Frontier seems to be a great addition here too. Trading Pokemon would be a lot better if you would actually can interact with player though. I'm just hoping and might be dissatisfied with the outcome.

I originally thought the roller skates would replace the typical Running Shoes, but the player seems to run in the latest trailer, so I don't think that's the case. Also, the roller skates don't seem any faster than the Running Shoes, in my opinion, so I was thinking that you might get a choice between running and skating. I guess that could be interesting.

However, the character seems to walk pretty quickly anyway, so who knows? I'm glad we'll be able to ride Gogoat, even if it does end up being limited to certain areas. Just the concept of being able to finally ride a Pok?mon makes my inner child very happy.

because of the circle pad, the running could be pressure sensitive. altho it'd be weird on the grid

Has anyone noticed the differences between the announcement trailer and gameplay trailer?

Differences:

-Grass on the space occupied by a Pokemon during each battle is now reduced and a new inclined plain is added in the background.
-Noticeable frame rate drop during attack animations.

Hmmm... I'm so excited

Edit:

I love how they ditched the realistic look in the Pokedex 3D app and made it more like in the anime due to the addition of outlines. I feel like I'm watching Pokemon instead of playing it.

Yea, I'm so glad they decided to go with cel shaded rather the pokedex or battle revolution style. This style is so much for fitting to be able have the transition from the moving sprites in BW.

I heard that it was confirmed that customization of the trainer is now available in the new X and Y.

It would feel a lot more fun that mostly when playing online. I just hate seeing me like I was battling a mirror.

For Starter Pokemon, I'd like to make that panda-like Poke as my Starter. I made Herdier my Starter since I love using him. I didn't want to evolve him further for obvious reasons. I wanted to know what are the evolutionary course for each Starter.

I'm earning cash just to buy both games and I'm kinda planning to buy an XL just for this title. Will they sell bundles?

No word yet on an X/Y bundle but I'd venture to guess that they will. If they do end up selling a bundle I'll probably end up buying one myself :P

Honestly, anything can happen at this point.

We did have some of the Elite 4 trainers use a Dark type team.

Remember Karen from the Gold and Silver series?

I believe there was a Elite 4 trainer from the B/W series that used a Dark Type team

Don't forget Sidney from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald! I always thought a Dark Type gym would be cool, so I hope they make it happen this time. I won't complain if they don't though.

Or it might not be a light type and there won't be a light type ever.

OR they change every type to either light or fairy. both are weak to each other. and every move becomes a 100% OHKO. Then they release gen 7 next year with all the regions. only for vita.
my worst nightmare

Every time i look at sylveon I go back and forth between normal, flying, bug, or new type. But I'll be pretty disappointed if it's just a boring normal type. They shouldn't have to keep it a secret this long for that. But it's starting to not matter much right now. I'm much more interested in other things about the game. I really wanted there to be another eeveelution. There's still hope that there is another one, and that it goes with the gender theme where the other one is male type and looks more masculine.

Overall im glad they are keeping a lot of things under the hood. makes me even more excited. I actually hope they don't release a ton of info at E3. maybe just some types, starter evos, and first couple towns gameplay.

They're making her type unknown maybe because of the unreleased Genesect Extremespeed: Mewtwo's Awakening

I think it'd be cool if they included streetpass into a safari zone. different types of pokemon and items appear for different passes.

Its either if they make another safari zone or a pokemon transfer building to put in the game.

I am guessing it will be Normal. Think about it, what types can Eevee not evolve into?
Ghost
Normal
Fight
Poison
Flying
Bug
Steel
Ground
Rock

Most of them are clear choices for it to NOT be. The only one that really seems to fit would be normal. Bet we'll see another form as well, Eevee forms have a history of coming in pairs.

Well, Smash has already attempted to hint towards Sylveon's type and from what they've showed, it appears that she could be a new type.

Sylveon was first forced into a drum by a muscular man, which implies that Sylveon might be weak against Fighting-type. Next, Sylveon was able to break a block of ice, which implies that Sylveon is probably strong against Ice-type. With those things in mind, they thought that Sylveon might be a Steel-type and they tested that theory by checking if she had an immunity to Poison. It's not obvious if Sylveon is weak to Poison or not, but she was definitely affected by Poison, and that strikes out a Steel-type possibility.

Here's the video, if you're curious. The section that I'm talking about starts around the 44:00 point:

Spoiler!

I'm not saying that there will be a new type, but none of the current types follows all three of those descriptions, so it's definitely possible. Either way, speculating about her type is getting old at this point and I really hope they reveal it soon.

Added after 23 minutes:

few more days until we get over an hour of x y. the suspense is killing me, although im going to try to stay away from viewing the whole thing. I just want to see if they show the typing of sylveon and legendaries. I also want them to show the starter evos but that's doubtful.
