Default Tanning Question

As an African-American player of this game I have been desperately trying to get a tan in game and I have not tanned AT ALL despite playing the game a lot everyday. Is it because I'm wearing a Mii Mask most of the time?

I have the same problem, but opposite, lol. Totally white IRL, but my character has a tan that's about as dark as your Mii's skin that I can't get rid of. I've had this tan for 3 days now.

I'm not really sure how the tan occurred. I often carry a parasol with me during the day and I play more at night.

XD I read online somewhere that if you keep carrying an umbrella it will eventually go away. Ugh lucky I want a tan though! To experiment I'm going to now wear my Mii Mask when I play and see if my skin tone changes lol

Please Nintendo, just make skin color an option in the next AC ;-;

Sounds like the Mii Mask is masking out the sunlight, but I dunno for sure if that really is the case.

I've carried a parasol around for 3 days now, I try not to play much during the day and I sometimes leave my character standing in buildings/houses for a few hours. I don't wanna have to time travel to get rid of this tan. xD

Yep, apparently the Mii Mask and all other hats prevent tanning...

Guess who feels like a dope ;-;

On a brighter note, I think if YOU wear a hat (even something like a Halo lol) you won't get a tan, so try that maybe?

I usually wear hats/masks like, cat cap, frog cap, pink zap helmet, King Tut mask and Majora's Mask. I noticed the tan happening when I started wearing the tiny princess crown, but that still counts as covering your head, so... who knows? lol.

I've been wearing the Fi mask a lot since it completely covers the head.

Hmm, agh all these tanning requirements are confusing ;-; I'm just gonna assume that since the Mii Mask covers the whole head, it prevents tanning. It sounds possible... Right?

1. when you start your town, the character has a random tan from the start. It then acts on that as a tanning preference. For instance, a person who starts with a tan will tan much easier then a pale person. However, if you manage to gain/lose a tan, then the preference changes.

2. Glasses do not count to preventing tans. Hats and umbrellas/parasols help, but Masks are the most effective. Playing only during the night helps to rid it somewhat, while day playing allows tanning. I think your problems are from your starting tan.

Mii mask is glasses. So it doesn't help.

Care to find a source for that?

July 16 to September 15 - Tanning Season
Your player can tan while playing outside at least 15 minutes between 10am and 5pm, if it is not raining (and your player is not carrying an umbrella or wearing an item that prevents tanning). There are seven stages to the tanning.
The following items prevent tanning:
1-Up Cap Fi Mask Outback Hat Stagehand Hat
Alpinist Hat Fireman's Hat Paperboy Cap Star Cap
Baby's Hat Floppy Hat Pilot's Hat Straw Boater
Balloon Hat Football Helmet Pink-Zap Helmet Straw Hat
Batter's Helmet Ghost Mask Plain Black Cap Straw Umbrella Hat
Big Bro's Hat Grandpa Hat Police Cap Student Cap
Birthday Hat Green Cap Puffy Hat Top Hat
Black Veil Green New Year's Hat Pumpkin Head Tulip Hat
Blue Cap Green-Pumpkin Head Purple Cap Wario Hat
Blue New Year's Hat Green-Zap Helmet Purple-Pumpkin Head White Cap
Blue Ogre Mask Hero's Cap Racing Helmet White Team Hat
Blue Plaid Fedora Hunter's Cap Red Cap Witch's Hat
Blue-Zap Helmet Jockey's Helmet Red New Year's Hat Wrestling Mask
Bug Mask King Tut Mask Red Ogre Mask Y. New Year's Hat
Captain's Hat Knight's Helmet Red Team Hat Yellow Cap
Catcher's Mask Light-Blue Cap Red-Pumpkin Head Yellow-Pumpkin Head
Cavalier Hat Li'l Bro's Hat Red-Zap Helmet Cucumber Pack
Cloche Hat Lion-Dance Mask Retro Helmet Facial Mask
Conical Straw Hat Mailman's Hat Roman Helmet Gas Mask
Dandy Hat Majora's Mask Safety Helmet Hockey Mask
Detective Hat Makar's Mask Samus Mask Jester's Mask
Diving Mask Midna's Mask School Hat Lemon Pack
Elegant Hat Monster Mask Ski Mask Masquerade Mask
Explorer's Hat Motocross Helmet Sombrero All 36 Umbrellas
Fencing Mask Mummy Mask Space Helmet

List is too long so I copied the list. Just use CTRL+F and check if your item is in the list. If it isn't, you can tan with it.

NO .

There really needs to be a skin colour change option at Shampoodles. Like, why not?

I play quite a bit during the day and haven't tanned a bit. :/ I thought you only tanned from spending a lot of time on the island. Interesting information - thanks guys!

I wore the pink zap helmet and carried an parasol all the time yesterday and today my tan is starting to finally show some fading. It's still on the dark side, but now it looks more like a dark'ish tan than having black skin.

lol yea, don't wear a hat if you want to get tan. My gf is whiter than white and some random on club tortimer asked her if she was black she was so tan lol.

Needless to say, she wears a hat now.

You tan lots at the island without wearing hats or holding an umbrella....just head to the island and do the usual (Pick fruit, catch bugs, etc.) and playing for longer periods of time in your regular town without the protection of hats and umbrellas, the next day i think you become a shade darker...or at least thats how i got a tan :P
