Default SteamWorld Dig

To quote the description on Nintendo eShop:

"SteamWorld Dig is a platform mining adventure. Take the role as Rusty, a lone mining steambot, as he arrive to an old mining town in great need. Dig your way through the old earth, gaining riches while uncovering the ancient threat that lurks below...

Carve a path through the earth, and explore a deep underground world full of secrets, treasure, and terrors.

Uncover the remnants of Human civilization, a degenerate race of dynamite-wielding troglodytes.

Meet the weird and interesting townsfolk of Tumbleton and help the community get back on its feet.

Beautiful, high-res graphics with dynamic lights and multiple parallaxed background layers."

Okay, aside from some grammatical errors, that description sounds promising, and the trailer makes this game look pretty awesome! One comment on YouTube said it's like a better version of Terraria (thought he followed that up by saying Terraria was pretty terrible, so I don't know what to make of that...).

It currently costs $8.99 right now on the Nintendo eShop. I'm going to get it soon (it would be nice if I was informed about sales on this and the Wii U's eShop, if anyone can tell me how I can be informed about that kind of thing).

Aww man, I was gonna make a topic about this game. Lol.

Bought it yesterday and it's hard to put down. It's basically like a mix between Minecraft and Metroid, digging with upgradeable equipment and a randomly generating world. Addicting as heck.

Controls are very tight and wall-jumping through caverns you've dug out is fun. It looks gorgeous too and the animations are very smooth. almost feels like it's 60 FPS but I don't think it is.. (?). Only thing that's kinda bleh is the music, it's pretty generic and the same 2 songs have been playing for the whole 2 hours I've played of it so far. But that's only a minor complaint.

Basically if you're desperate for a Metroid game on 3DS like I am, get this one while you wait.

BTW, here's the Facebook fan page:

https://www.facebook.com/steamworlddig

And an interview with Brjann Sigurgeirsson, the CEO of Image & Form (who made this game):

Image & Form Teases More SteamWorld Projects for the Future - News - Nintendo World Report

Edit: Oh, BTW, just bought the game, like Joba said, it's hard to put down! I'm tempted to say it's probably one of the best games on the 3DS eShop!

I have been excited for this ever since I've first heard of it. I love this type of game. I just purchased it, which is quite an accomplishment for the developer because it is only my second eShop game. I usually wait for sales but this seems too good for that.

Awesome game. I have put a couple hours in so far. Once you get some upgrades, it really gets fun.

I would buy this game but... The price is kinda high for an Eshop game. I'm also worried that I'll beat it in just a few hours.

This could be the case. The devs are quoted as saying you'll get 6 or 8 hours out of it, but I am near the bottom (digging) of the exploration. There are plenty of areas I have not explored, but I am getting close to the end. That's with 3 and a half hours of play time.

Edit: Then again...that trailer shows a world I have not uncovered. Maybe I am farther away than I thought...

Just beat the game. I am kind of sad it was so short. The developer said first playthrough would be like 10 hours. I beat it in 4 hours and 22 minutes. It gave me a silver medal, so I am guessing under 4 hours is a gold. I got a gold in money earned and I think ores mined (I got them all I think), and a bronze in deaths (17). I think someday I will replay it. I bought it with $9 from the $30 credit, so it was technically free for me. Very fun though.

So the game is kind of like Metroid? It's like an open-world speed-running game?

By the way I added you on my 3DS. Check your profile for a message.

Kind of. You find new equipment in caves underground and you sell ore to upgrade your equipment. You keep digging and backtrack your way to the surface (you can buy teleporters to help). There are multiple areas too.

So, for those of you who've played the game, I have a question: at what point do you start getting ore... or this blue orbs that I assume is ore? I ask because I've reached the point where my upgrades are requiring them.

They aren't very far down in the first area. You probably should have some by now. They come in little metal capsules (think Dragon Ball Z space ships but gray).

Added after 2 Hours 22 minutes:

Just tried a speedrun. Managed to beat it in 1:54 with 2 deaths.

Now when you say "first area", do you mean the area where you get those speed boots or whatever?

That is the first cave. In the second cave you should be able to find some orbs.

The developer announced this yesterday on NeoGAF:

Quote:
You're asking for follow-up on SteamWorld Dig and I'm happy to tell you that as of yesterday, thanks to the overwhelming response and a relieved sense of having a potential big hit, we decided to forge ahead on the next project in the series. SteamWorld is here to stay, and we'll stay on the 3DS.
Looks like we're getting a sequel :3 I hope it's a platformer too, since there's been different kinds of SteamWorld games.

I really don't like it, got bored shortly after finding my dead grandpa or uncle or somebody. I like the looks though. I guess I need to just give it more time.

Is the second cave the one the red dot leads to, and has a number 2 next to it like how the first cave has a number 1 sign next to it? Because I found another cave that doesn't have any signs and couldn't do much there. Either way, thanks for the help.

Yeah, I saw that. While I think it's a little pretentious to go ahead and make several games as part of a series before seeing if the first one is even successful, I DO like the setting of SteamWorld, and look forward to seeing what they do with this concept.

No, the second cave will be one without an upgrade. The one that might not have been able to do much is probably it. There is an area near the top you can go for an ore and the orbs are even higher.

The area I'm talking about has a pool of water and a ledge I can't reach... Do I use ladders to get to it or something?

@above: I don't think you can use ladders in the "puzzle rooms".

I just got to the part with the laser beams and such and the game took a pretty big leap in difficulty o.o; I'm scared now xD But it got a lot more interesting.

I've been taking it slowly, 4:27 played after getting to the third area. I wish there were boss battles.

Btw, the game has reached #1 in recent best-sellers chart on the EU eShop, beating stuff like SMB2 which released the same week. Pretty nice when most people hadn't even heard about the game until a week ago.

Finished the game as well. I didnt look at the clock, but I believe I was around the 5 hour mark. I went back and collected orbs for a few more hours, though. Ended up with a couple bronze and a couple silver medals. Very fun game.

I do hope they keep the platformer type of game for the sequel. The first Steamworld was a tower defense game....not this gem.

i dont mean to be rude but this game turned out to not be worth it. i mean theres basically only like, i think 10 enemies in the entire game. also is your only option is dying in the end? i thought maybe after i get everything unlocked i would survive or something, but i didnt. and i barely got everything unlocked too. i didnt know there was a limit in the stuff you mine. money wasnt the issue it was those blue orbs.

Well you're officially the first person I've heard of that didn't like it.

If you buy too many teleporters which cost 3 orbs, you can't get all the upgrades btw. I think I had like 10-15 spare after unlocking everything.

Got it today and played it just a bit. I'm not fond of how it can become impossible to get back up if you like to mine everything, I wish I could search everything. But so far it seems well made.

PUT A SPOILER MARK HERE MAN!

Anyways, I was wrong about the game, I thought it sucked. But **** it was good. I liked the charming, steampunk artstyle, the controls were goddamn flawless (I mean, as a platformer it felt better in terms of controls than Mario Bros games), the concept is nice...
What else can I say? There are some flaws, like the absence of bosses and the short duration but the game was a 1st attempt, it's not like the devs had tons of experience. It also costs 9 Euros, which is a really good price.

I am not saying that the game is perfect, I would give it an 8/10, but in my opinion it is the best eShop game at the moment and it is worth the 9 euros price tag. I am really happy that it sells well because there is a chance they will make an even better sequel (like they did with Rolling Western).

Lol, I remember you saying the game looked bad on the chatbox. Good thing you gave it a try.

Zuperman, you can dig out everything you need if you just use the proper technique, i.e. mine out horizontal shafts and go down 3-4 blocks, then start digging horizontally again. Also keep in mind that you can dig "over" a block if you stand *right* at the edge of a gap. Don't forget ladders either. :P
You get some abilities which help you traverse later in the game, like

While I presently do not own the game, I am pleased to hear that the developer is pleased with the sales for the game on the eShop. (Image & Form Discuss How SteamWorld Dig Became Such A Success - 3DS eShop News @ Nintendo Life)

This is a great little game.

Its funny reading that some played the game for the story. Which is like playing The Sims for the story. Who cares? The gameplay is addictive/fun and the real star of the show.

I'm still not sure whether I should pull the trigger or not. The current price is great, I heard glowing things about the game and I love platformers, but something about this just does not look fun. It wouldn't be the first time something that doesn't look fun is actually fun to play though. I especially don't understand what is supposed to be fun about the simple act of digging?

I was wrong, I got it before it was too late (last day of the sale), and the game is just amazing. Very deserving of the praise it got. The controls are perfect; the upgrades are very cool; the exploration component, making your own path, is exhilarating; the pacing is just right; and perhaps most importantly, the concept of your light gradually dying, slowly making the environment darker, adds a subtle element of tension.

It's very fun and very good, one of the best platformers on the system. I recommend people on the fence to jump on it before the price goes back to normal.

my only complaint with this game was its lenght AND...
Spoiler!

the game doesn't change much until the end... there isn't much variety. It's very good at what it does but it is a really narrow experience.
I hope they expand the game with a next installment where we will see the same gameplay and mechanics but bigger variety.

Who knows, maybe they'll make a full length version with an actual cartridge? I beat the game in under 4 hours, and the fact that it doesn't have more than one boss is my only complaint. Yes, the controls are flawless, and the fact that the game doesn't say, "NOPE. DO THIS, NOW." Is simply rare. I encourage anyone to buy this while the sale is still going on today.

I have spent 9.5 hours on the game and I have completed it 3 times:
-my first run
-once to get as many minerals as I could and all the upgrades and stuff
-once for a speedrun

...yes it's short...

Planning on buying this once it hits PS4/Vita next week.

Would buy it on 3DS, but 3D effects on 2D-styled games do nothing for me, and the Vita version probably looks smoother due to the higher resolution. Also, I'm mildly addicted to trophies.

Mildly.

Did the sale end? I had no idea about it but I just looked it up and it said until today? It's showing as $8.99 in the eshop. I may dl it if it's still half price, does look like it could be fun and everyone has been raving about it.

I've had this game for awhile but I played through it all the other night.

It took about 6 and a half hours to beat.

The exploration element was really addicting and I was dying to know what I would find once I had dug as far as I could.
