Default Is the 3ds for me?

Hi there!

I'm a big gamer, haven't really touched my 360 much (not much of a shooter) but I love RPGs and strategy games. Loved the Mass Effect series, enjoy(ed|ing) Dragon Age, Dragon's Dogma, Skyrim, Borderlands, MMORPGs, Starcraft 2, KOTOR 1/2, etc.

I was excited about getting a 3ds yesterday, but after realizing I won't be able to for another month, I'm not sure if I should get one in the first place. The last gameboy I had was way back when pokemon red (and later yellow) were new, and I enjoyed those games, as well as silver/crystal. However, I never got one of the newer gameboys, so I haven't touched the last generations, and I never had a chance to get into the multiplayer pokemon scene.

X/Y obviously looks cool, Ocarina of Time looks awesome, also looking forward to Kid Icarus. Fire Emblem looks cool, and the Mario games look like they might be fun. If I get a 3ds, it'll be the 3ds XL, but I'm still not sure at this point! It'll be a month or so before I can get one, so I'm wondering what similar people have found with the 3ds. I'm not sure about getting a 3ds just for 3-4 games, or buying games in hopes that I'll like them.

Now for my onslaught of questions!:
Do you have much replay value for single player games? What's the community like for games with multiplayer, in general? What's the worse thing about the 3DS? What's the best thing about the 3DS? What's your favorite game? What makes you feel your 3DS was worth the price? Can you suggest some games for me?

Thanks, look forward to speaking with you all.

If you still need somebody to convince you when you want to buy something, then I sugest you to avoid or at least delay your purchase.

It just doesn't seem to be a very smart thing to do.

I would wait to purchase the 3DS since you seem to need convincing, but I shall answer you questions anyways.

1. It depends. Mario games are just like Mario has always been, and the added DLC for NSMB2 makes it more worthwhile, but it was a stale game for me. Streetpass has also been used to encourage you to beat other player's times. Fire Emblem allows you to purchase maps as DLC, while also giving away free items and maps every two weeks. (although I think they have stopped now) Streetpass allows you to purchase items from teams, recruit their tactician for money, or fight with them. The deep customization system also increases replay value. Kid Icarus encourages, and nearly requires you, to continually repeat the story mode, fuse weapons, and grind for cash.

These are some of the better examples, and the actual replay value differs from game to game. However, even if you pick up a game with little to no replay value, the 3DS has such a great library that you will probably pick up another game anyways.

2. There is no in-chat feature, other than a very restrictive Friend's List that includes 20 character messages to be submitted to everyone. Swapnote allows you to send letters to everyone, although it can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days for the notes to be received. The 3DS should be integrated with a altered version of Miiverse that should fix most of these problems.

The community itself is mostly nice and friendly. However, there is always the occasional rage quitter when he/she loses a race or match in Mario Tennis or Mario Kart. Most people use forums like these to meet up and set up times to play.

3. The 3DS does not have an account system, so if your 3DS is rendered unplayable, all of your data for physical games, your friends, and digital apps/games will be lost. However, Nintendo should be fixing this with an update that, as well as bringing Miiverse to the 3DS, should link your NNID to your 3DS and Wii U, successfully setting up an account system.

4. The games. There are bad games, of course, but you hear very little about them. For example, Heroes of Ruin was touted as WoW for the 3DS. It received negative reviews, and most people haven't heard a thing about it since. There's Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Mario spin-offs, an actual quality Resident Evil game, Animal Crossing, Metal Gear, Luigi's Mansion, Mario and Luigi, and so much more.

5. The onslaught of quality games. The 3D effect actually works nicely, although most people turn it off. Earlier games seem to have more intense versions of 3D, but also feature ghosting. Ocarina of Time looks beautiful in 3D, but the effect is so intense, especially compared to more recent games, that it will most likely give you a headache on 100% 3D.

6. In terms of RPGs, there are many games you should get:

Fire Emblem: Awakening
Pokemon X and Y
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivors
Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers
Etrain Odyssey 4
Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance

While Project X Zone is touted as a fun cross-over fighter, it is actually a strategy-RPG, (and not a good one at that) where attacks are made by mashing buttons in sessions akin to fighting games, except your enemy doesn't fight back. I have only played the demo, however, people who have played the game say the demo does not give it justice.

Please note that I have played most, but not all of the games I have recommended to you.

Hi there,

Yeah, those games look pretty cool. I've been watching videos on youtube about some of the games, they all look fun! I think I will end up getting one! More than anything else, I probably just overreacted when I realized I wouldn't be able to get myself one for another month or so, and tried to convince myself I didn't want it anyway. Guess that didn't quite work!

I'll quite likely keep looking around the forums. Thanks for your time!
