Unhappy The infamous L and R button problem...

Alas, my L and R buttons have stopped working. Evidently, this is due to a failure in the design process that causes the L and R buttons on the DSi and 3DS to become clogged with dust, and they in turn become unresponsive. I have tried most if not all of the home remedies: using an extremely thin object to try and clean out the inside, using compressed air to blow the dust away: but none of these worked (the compressed air worked unreliably for a couple minutes on just the R button, but now it doesn't work at all). I am considering either taking the system apart to manually clean the dust or trading it in at gamestop to upgrade to a 3ds xl (after transferring my data, of course) (I won't have the money for this for a long time). Nintendo was willing to fix it for $80, but that seems insanely overpriced (My warranty hasn't expired, but this is categorized as a user error rather than a manufacturing error, so it only covers shipping), so I'm left with little choice. Does anybody have any recommendations? I am desperate for help

If dust was the problem, I'd probably attempt to open up the 3DS and clean the insides myself. I wouldn't spend $80 on something as simple as that. If you weren't comfortable with doing that yourself, I'd try to call a few computer or electronic repairs places and see if they'd be able to help.

Here's one of my favorite sites, called iFixit, where they take apart electronics to their very core and have several guides for changing specific components. It seems they have specific guides for changing both L and R, so you might want give those a look:

I found a screwdriver small enough to use for the inner screws on an old pocket knife of mine, but it is unfortunately of low quality, and I'm afraid any further attempts will prevent me from being able to unscrew it at all due to wear on the screws. I'll try maybe when I have a bit of money to spare for that professional tiny screwdriver.

I recommend trading it in for the 3DS xl. Try avoiding taking it apart in case something goes wrong and can't be put back together again. Hope this helps

What I just do is scrub the cracks of the button with a toothbrush, blow some air into the crack (with your mouth or canned air, whichever) rinse and repeat for awhile.

Works most of the time for me.

What i did was rip the buttons off and put a tiny drop of bike oil in each button. They may not feel the same but they still do the job comfortably.

I'm certain it has everything to do with lubricant and not dust.

Nintendo really needs to address this L and R button issue in their next handheld
