We've been waiting for the YouTube app for a while now, so it's expected that everybody is excited. I think, however, we should all be disappointed.

A great man once said "The browser's awful, Swapnote was awful, and this will be awful." That great man was myself. I got responses like "NO WAY DUDE YOU HAVNT TRIED YET OMFG!!!" Of course, I could of been proven wrong. I mean, Nintendo had opportunity after opportunity to improve free applications and things to do with the browser, but they hadn't, and they didn't.

I didn't even get to enjoy that eye-popping animation that comes up before you open software, it was just a YouTube logo on a grey rectangle. That's very appealing.

Since the 3DS and 2DS are casual, "Fun for the whole family" devices, I naturally assumed an over-protective child lock would be put in place. What was the name of the first featured video? "Vaginal Knitting".

Now, it can play videos, if it actually loads and doesn't crash, but most videos are very lacklustre.

I wanted to watch one of my favourite matches - Eddie Guerrero vs. JBL at Judgement Day 2004. The thumbnail was at least 720p. A very high quality thumbnail, so I assumed a very high quality video. It made an ass out of me, the video seemed to be less than 240p, distorted, blurred, patchy and discoloured.

Maybe it was just the video and not the app? I watched the exact same video on my PC, and my experience was only similar to the app when I turned it down to 240p. Worst of all, I couldn't find the button to turn the quality up on the 3DS! After those 30 minutes, my verdict was: "The match was great, the app sucks!"

Now, I know what you're thinking. "OMFG! IT'S A FREE APP WHAT'D U EXPCT?! BE GRATEFUL OMFG!"

I know it's a free app, but I also got a free app pre-installed on my iPod four years ago, and also have the website bookmarked. If Nintendo want to make a YouTube app, they got to make it so good, that I would choose to watch shows, let's plays, unboxings, prank calls and people being put threw flaming tables on my 3DS, opposed to my PC or iPod.

Nintendo failed to deliver, and I'm really pissed off about that.

I agree mostly with your review. The app is mediocre at best.
It's not as bad as I expected it to be. Certainly not as slow.
But when I clicked the "HD" button to improve video quality it actualy went back to standard quality which is obviously sub-par.

There is a problem with switching accounts I haven't figured out yet. I have my Youtube account separate from my gmail account (because of reasons). Youtube on th e3DS seems to use my main account and offers no option to switch to my secondairy account.
And the latter has all my subscriptions and playlists.

All in all it's a failry decent app. It doensn't excel however and that makes it just another youtube app like we have on so many other devices that aren't really ment to play youtube videos (I'm looking at you blueray player).

I believe the Youtube app was made by Google not Nintendo. You cannot simply give them bad rep for a third party application. I'm sure it wasn't easy creating a youtube application specifically for the 3DS as youtube videos are HTML 5 or flash based and the hardware was most likely not designed to be used in this way. And, "a great man once said" seriously? get over yourself.

Yesterday the app crashed for about 5 times today for about 8 times. This app seriously needs update like the one for wii U because it is not stable app and the quality of video could be better. It looks unfinished.

I have one single question about the app.

Does it support 3D videos using the 3D screen?

Nope. At least not yet, hopefully.

Regardless on who made it, Nintendo must have tested it and added it to the eShop. If they didn't like it, they wouldn't add it... Or perhaps they had to release a BETA because they were pressed for time?

Anyway, it's a piece of crap, and I'm glad I uninstalled it.

I think its a good app mine runs well with no slow down at all. My only complaint is it did crash on me 3 times in the days I used it so it can use a update. I never expected it to play 3D videos I dont know how they would do that because doesn`t the 3DS have its own kind of 3D display. I just dont know how they can make random you tube videos display 3D on a 3DS. Be cool if it did though.

Comparing a 3DS to an iPod is just wrong. They're not the same, so don't expect same functions. Also, there's a difference between what Nintendo can find in who knows how many days of testing they did, than thousands of people(if that's how many tested it). Since everything is awful, why are we excited about Flipnote then? I think the use of the word "awful" is wrong, because you wouldn't even need a 3DS if it's only full of awful experiences. Also, I have no idea what you would expect of the intro ("Wow an amazing YouTube logo floating around with sparkles and majestic stuff" no). At least it's simple. No, I'm not saying it's great, or it's bad, just pointing out stuff.

I'm not surprised this app is a bit of a disappointment. Well, I guess it's not too bad, but I doubt I'll ever use it since my 3DS, computer, phone, TV, Wii and Wii U are all next to each other.

It's worth it because you can still use other sites through it and it's a faster browser than the actual one once you make your way out of the Youtube prison. So at least I can watch sexy videos form sites OTHER than Youtube, which is also another big fail for Google on this app.

No, iPods and 3DS' aren't the same. One is meant for music, the other is meant for games. One can play YouTube a lot better than the other, that's why I mentioned it.

I bought a 3DS because of the games mostly.

I was watching every detail Nintendo gave out, and I followed it's adventure from a rumoured device to it hitting the stores. I got mine before the browser came about, before Swapnote, and before YouTube.

The 3DS itself doesn't suck, but I think pretty much everything other than gaming is terrible (If you prefer that word).

If they want a good YouTube app, make a good one! Just get rid of this piece of stinking garbage.

I gave the Youtube app some more thought. I've used it a couple of times now (mostly when I'm on the toilet ^_^)
I think the Youtube app is a lot like other apps made for Nintendo consoles.
Like the browser on the (all) DS systems and the Wii (don't know about the WiiU).
It's just not it. It works, that's for sure, but most of the time is lacking in eighter speed, functionality or performance.

And it's not only on Nintendo systems. Also on the PS3 (my brother has one) and PSP.
Not to mention the browsers and youtube players on TVs and bluray players.
Those devices just aren't made for these purposes.

The way I see it the youtube app is just a novelty on the 3DS which provides some entertainment when I'm on the can.

I thought it was terrible. wen I tried to sighn in, they made me try to use my google name, and not my youtube username. the quality was terrible.

at least the quality is better than it would be if Microsoft tried to make a portable system and give it a youtube app *waggles tongue*

I wouldn't be so harsh if the app was actually good, but it's terrible, and it deserves the criticism I gave it.

It's probably the thing I hate the most about the 3DS. That, or having Mario slapped on everything.

Well, it's the first version and hopefully they'll listen to feedback.

3ds youtube app is the most crippled half assed crash–loving piece of **** app ever released.
why release a product years before its complete?
the level of ****tyness is beyond the understanding of human kind.
loading takes forever and crash is a common thing.
seems like whoever released it didnt have time to do it.
thats bull**** man, the most loved site on a successful console and they worked on it for maybe a week.
also 3d videos doesnt matter here. its not 3dtube, so who cares.
dont give me the "just get a tablet or pc for it” excuse. hell no.
they gave an app on the 3ds, i wanna use it.

The app isn't by Nintendo, it's by YouTube themselves, and they probably barely even care other than learning how to code for the 3DS and then getting it overwith.
Actually the 3DS resolution is around 240p so it shouldn't look that bad on a 3DS screen, the reason why it does is because when YouTube scales the video down to the lower size they're trying to make the video still look "smooth" and not pixelated, meaning they use a bunch of colour mixing tricks which just ends up making it more blurry than it would've been
At least, I found, the streaming quality was fast. There is also the option to turn on a hi-def mode, but then it couldn't load fast enough. The 3DS does not have very fast internet so *shrugs*
Could've been better but at least it does play videos.
