Default Grumpa - A Terminally Ill Adventure

As a school project, a team of about 15 people and myself made this game.

It's a running game with boss fights. Two gameplay mechanics are in in. We made it for Android for now, but a Windows version is also available below.

I was one of the game's main programmers.

Anyway, here's a trailer.

Now, let's talk a bit about the game.

Story

You are Grumpa, a grumpy old man who suffers from a deadly diseases, and who is about to end his life at the hospital. However, his life has been filled with unfortunate events, which made him grumpy. While being at the hospital, he ends up sleeping. While in his dreams, you gain control of the man himself, running through obstacle courses and ending up fighting against what he regrets the most about his life. Doing so will make sure he rests in peace afterwards.

Gameplay

The game has two distinct gameplay mechanics. First, you start playing a running game. It plays like games such as Temple Run, Agent Dash and Rayman Jungle Run. Grumpa automatically runs forwards. You can make him jump, slide and hook on specific objets by using the rope of his intravenous stand.

Once you reach the end of the running part, you get into the fighting one. The game becomes a vertical game, where Grumpa jumps into a pit. On the bottom of the pit, there's the boss you have to defeat. On your way to the boss, there are killable obstacles that are props from the boss. You reach the boss by killing at least most of those props while going down to reach him. The pit also has hook spots where you can get a grip to see anything before jumping on an enemy again.

That would be it for a stage. The game has one full stage, and an incomplete one. We had three months to make the game, so that would explain that fact.

That actually looks pretty good.
Looks a bit like Temple Run.
What part of the game did you make?

Thank you.

I've mostly done the programming in the running part of the game. I've coded the basic mechanics of that part at the end of last summer, which were tweaked during the rest of our time after that. I've also worked on integrating Grumpa's animations in the game, and I've worked in close collaboration with the character's animator to make sure he looks as alive as we could.

While I've done a lot in the running part, I've also contributed in the rest of the game, by helping our teammates and by fixing bugs everywhere. I've also done more noticeable stuff like coding the touch controls, the cutscenes integration and the "heart" reward system.

I'll also be the head of the new and improved Google Play edition that will come later in 2014 for free.
