As you might know, Zero Mission was the first game in the Metroid series where Nintendo really focused on Samus's sex appeal (if you haven't see the Japanese TVCM for the game yet, you should), and it was also the game introducing the zero suit. And, it was the first game to give us a blatant butt shot of Samus:



On the left, you see Samus from Super Metroid.

On the right, you see Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission.

Notice any differences in muscle mass and body?

Now, I really just want as many opinions as possible here... how many people think that Samus's butt looks fat in Zero Mission? I don't mean that as a negative thing. Fat isn't bad when it comes to the female butt, is it? :-)

The thing is... I think it looks fat in this image. Fat and sexy. Logically, Samus wouldn't have a fat butt, but logic doesn't always apply to videogames. And in this case, I think Nintendo went more with sex appeal, while in Super Metroid they went more with logic (she looks all buff in Super Metroid, while she looks all soft in Metroid: Zero Mission).

But the above is just my opinion. Do you agree that her butt looks fat in that image, or do you disagree with me?

Oh yeah, I should also explain why I think it looks fat (this is my subjective eloboration):

- First, her butt looks very big in comparison to her body.

- Second, her body doesn't look toned at all, it looks slim. So why should the size of her butt come from muscle when the rest of her body looks all soft?

- Third, if you look closely at her left butt cheek, you can actually tell that there's a faint line (the creasing that separates her buttock from her thigh) running all the way out to her hip, making it look like her buttocks are folding over her thighs quite a bit.

To me, she has a big, fat butt - which is very attractive and good looking. I think her body looks much better in Metroid: Zero Mission than in Super Metroid where it's all muscle.

Am I the only one of this opinion? I need to know! :-)

I understand your point, so please let me explain it from my perspective:

Most fictional characters are drawn to look good and/or sexy. We have extreme examples like the girls in DoA, but also characters like Samus, Link, Jill from Resident Evil, Miranda from Mass Effect etc. If this was an unusual thing to think, then why are there so many sexy characters in games (and movies)? Clearly, many people appreciate it.

Of course, you might think it's all weird. But I think that far from all people share that opinion. Frankly, sex sells - and I don't see the problem with that.

And BTW, DeviantArt is a HUGE site with maaaaany people appreciating that... ;-)

Kind of makes sense for her not to have a well-refined butt, with the Power Suit giving her superhuman powers and Zero Suit Samus being useless in that sneaking section of M:ZM. If she was muscular like in Super Metroid, it would be weird that she couldn't kill the pirates without the Power Suit.

And then again, all video game characters get revised in their modern days..

I buy your logic. Maybe they wanted intentionally to portray her as weaker in that last section in Zero Mission, to give the player a sense of "I can't fight, I have to avoid instead of shooting". Maybe her body and her butt were drawn with that in mind? Just to give us the image of a weaker Samus?

So it seems I've stumbled upon the butt thread that was spoken of in tales of old.

Honestly, I don't understand why people are so sensitive to this subject? It's Samus's butt. Is sexual related stuff still embarrassing to talk about 2014?

And I don't buy (the very common) argument that "it's not real". Fictional characters in Zelda and Final Fantasy are not real either, but just look how deeply people care about them - even though they don't exist for real.

Characters in long lasting franchises get redesigned all the time.

I'm not gonna lie, I like the 'sexier' designs more (shut up about my title!).
Also, her butt doesn't look fat.
I wouldn't mind if it were any bigger.
So I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Why is it pointless? According to that logic, wouldn't it be completely pointless to discuss about the new design of Link's face in SSBB4, or how Little Mac look in the same game? They're not real anyway...

Or imagine all Final Fantasy fans. Imagine all girls who loves yaoi between Cloud and Sephiroth, or boys who enjoys Tifa. They're not real, but it really doesn't matter, because it's about imagination. That's why the "they're just pixels" argument is so stupid IMO, because even pixels and artificial shapes triggers our imaginations very much.

The point with this thread was not just to listen to my opinion about her butt, but to everyone's! I already know I think it looks fat, but I wanted to know if more people did so, or if others had completely different takes on it.
