Default Oculus to get purchased by Facebook for 2 billion dollars

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/25/fa...for-2-billion/

...and then, Notch stopped his deal with Oculus that was about making an official Minecraft VR mode.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/03/25/no...creeps-me-out/

As someone who tried that thing and found it to have crazy potential, I'm now confused on where it's going with that Facebook stuff.

I mean, Facebook?! That's so ****ing random man!

Please, please, please 3DS Forums. Dont be stupid about Oculus being bought by Facebook like Reddit and the rest of the internet.

This is a good thing, and the terms that Luckey and the rest of Oculus recieved for the buyout is great. They get to stay separate and focus on everything they already have been doing, except now, they have the means to accelerate the process in getting the Consumer version done... I seriously am excited and cannot wait for more announcements!!!

They talked about how they could make the Rift a social thing, which is why I'm confused about the situation.

I don't know where it's actually going. Maybe they will walk on the same path they've walked so far, or maybe Facebook could deviate them from said path.

I haven't Kickstarted the thing in any way. I've only tried the device itself and I really liked it, so maybe I ain't as emotionally affected as the "rest of the Internet" is.

All this means, is that the Rift isnt ONLY going to be for gaming, so it can potentially reach many more consumers for other functionality. The Rift is still being made for gaming, that is the primary concern at this point, but the future holds future functionality. Zuckerberg wants to be at the forefront of that future.

If Zuckerberg holds his promise of not interfering with Oculus Rift at this point, allowing the team to focus on gaming then this will actually turn out well since with Facebook backing it, they have financial stability and a certain future. And maybe he will manage to do something good with it, he must have some plan in mind to pay that much for what seems to be a gaming accessory.

So much overreaction

In the end, this will be good for the Rift for two reasons.

1. Capital: With the backing of facebook and their large sums of capital, the Oculus Rift project is now not hindered by limited funds, thus being able to act with more freedom.

2. Notability: Unlike the Oculus Rift at the current moment, Facebook is used by millions of people, and known by a large portion of the world. The Oculus Rift may/will be able to capitalize on the prominence of facebook for better success and reach a larger market, thus ushering us into the age of VR much faster than if it was on its own.

I'm at least glad in this thread there aren't any kneejerk reactions. While I may not agree with Facebook on everything, I'll take a wait and see approach with how they handle Oculus Rift before I cast judgement.

The thing that bugs me about it is the media.

I Tried it at a convention, this guy backed it up financially and eventually got one for 400$.
So he brought it, and let me and other people try it with the Rollercaoster Demo.
Amazing, thats all I can tell.

Then, Facebook bought it, it made headlines, only to be compared to Google Glasses,
Which isn't even close, it's like comparing Apples and Oranges, and we all know thats different.
I mean come on...People don't know what their talking about and makes headlines.

But don't you remember that 2DEES headlines, which mentioned that the 2DS would have lower resolution Graphics than the 3DS? yeah you guys get the point
the media is clueless as sh-t.

Also, If Facebook isn't going to interfere with the development and nothing changes
and it will come a consumer available thing, playing FPS with it [for example]
is going to be awesome. I hope this will happen.

Facebook will only throw money on it [the 2 Billion] and let it happen.
I Wouldn't mind some social interaction, but none of that Facebook Homepage OS Bull****.

The 2 Billion was to BUY Oculus, all the money they throw at Oculus VR, isn't part of that 2 Billion.

There is a fan made mod bringing Minecraft to Occulus anyway. We'll get VR Minecraft one way or another.

I'm guessing Facebook is trying to counter Google Glass. I think we about to have a War of the Internets!

Except Google Glass has nothing to do with virtual reality gaming.
