Default How do you listen to music?

Before modern technology, music was usually the main event whenever it was played. Now that we can stream music instantly and store thousands of songs on a single device, we have many more options for how and when we listen to music.

Most of my time listening to music is while driving. I'll pick out a few CD's to bring with me and listen through whole albums. Volume can range from barely audible to deafening, depending on my mood. The rest of my time listening to music is while I'm playing it. That's when I'm really focused on the music itself.

So how do you listen to music? Do you multitask while listening or focus on the music? Do you listen to whole albums or shuffle through individual songs? Do you ever try changing the way you listen to music?

I used to keep headphones on when I was in my room to listen to music. Nowadays I just use my speakers and randomize a playlists I've made with the music I own.

If I'm studying I generally use classical music or jazz. Lyrics are generally too distracting if I want to focus.

On the road when I'm driving, I use CDs - Some of which I've made myself

When doing school, I listen with headphones.

I'll also listen to CD's when I'm in the car. Other than that, I play piano and then I really get into the feel.

I usually listen to my music on my iPod whenever I have to take the MTA. Makes the ride a lot more pleasant.

It's almost always set to a smooth jazz / instrumental hip hop playlist of mine.

I listen at home with headphones or in the car through speakers

Lately I have been trying to lower the usual volume I listen to in case I might get hearing damage (especially in the car)

I always use headphones, and I usually listen while I'm doing work or when I'm just using the internet. If I'm playing a game on my phone or something, I always listen to music.

Usually with my ears, but it's happened that I use my toes for variation.

I use headphones because why not, with my phone set to shuffle.

Because music files are hard to convert and because I'm lazy I usually get all my music on old MP3 devices and then listen to them.

I try and get my files as high-quality as possible. That means 320kbps MP3, or FLAC if it's available.

When I'm at home, foobar2000 is usually loaded up on my PC with a bunch of playlists. If I'm busy I'll put it on shuffle, but other times I'll choose each song to play as the previous one ends. (My mind is fickle and can be very specific in what music it wants.)
Usually I listen through speakers for ease of use, but if I'm in a real audiophile mood I grab my headphones.

The same goes when I'm outside, except it's through my iPhone and earphones.

I also try to grab FLACs and high-quality MP3s. If none of them are available, then I'll live with what else's out there.

At home, foobar2000. I shuffle my whole library, or I load up an album, an EP or a mix. Depends on what I'm doing. The sound goes through my ASUS Xonar U7 USB sound card (which I also use on my laptop) and then to my 2.1 speaker system most of the time. I also have Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones, but I almost never use them. I prefer speakers. Another thing I can do is stream some stuff from YouTube, Grooveshark, Rdio or 8tracks when I feel like discovering new music.

When I go out, I'm almost always in my own car. I've installed my own car radio, which can take almost anything when it comes to physical media. I have dedicated a 64 GB USB thumb drive to load it with my whole library, in MP3 (FLACs are converted into MP3 in that case). I connect it on my car radio and I let it shuffle. I can also come up with CDs (burned or retail).

That car radio is also connected to my big 12" subwoofer in the trunk. As you might have guessed, I like bass. That sub could cause mini-tsunamis of bass, but I'd rather have it adjusted to make sure I could hear the rest as well. However, the speakers are still my car's stock speakers. They sound decent enough.

I used to have like... 800 songs on my iPod that I'd shuffle through a bit of daily. And then iTunes screwed up somewhere and there went 700 of the songs. So. That had to change. Especially since most of the files weren't even on the computer anymore. Nowadays I mostly listen to Youtube, or one of the few albums I do have left.

I found something cool today. http://www.subsonic.org/

It streams your local music over the Internet into a browser! It's also free. I think I'll use it more.

Mine is almost exclusively in the car. I put a bunch of albums on an Mp3 cd. The only other time I usually listen to music is when I am in the gym.

Oh yeah, I also listen to music at the gym. I load my tiny Sansa Clip Zip with some albums, tracks and mixes I want to hear during that session. I use the Sennheiser CX 680 Sports earbuds.

What kind of music do you listen to for working out?

Also I wish I had a pair of wireless earbuds, it'd make listening to music while running so much easier.

Most of the time I listen at home from my laptop. I use my portable speakers as the bass and everything is so much better than my laptop's crappy speakers. If it's late at night, I use my headphones.
I sometimes listen in public, from my smartphone using either my earbuds, or again, my headphones. I find though that naturally, my earbuds have better noice cancellation so I tend to use them more.

When I'm doing the muscles, it could be anything I like, really. Mostly electronic stuff, but also some rock and other kinds of stuff.

Then, when I run on the treadmill, I mostly like putting some UK Hardcore, Gabber, Drum & Bass and Drumstep (and their variants) because gotta go fast.

Podcasts and DJ mixes do the trick too.

Either on my PC through Winamp, or from my super old mp3 player. HTC headphone jack busted so that's out of the picture now.

Another thing I like doing now is listening to web radios in the car.

LTE network -> Phone -> Car radio (via Bluetooth) -> Speaker system -> Happy Gab

Well, now I've only tried Digitally Imported (www.di.fm) using the mobile app. I could try more web music things (8tracks, Google Play, etc.) soon.
