Default Choosing the opposite sex

I've observed that many people (usually guys) like to choose the opposite sex when given the opportunity. And I'm not talking about games like Persona 3 Portable where there are obvious changes in story elements by choosing your character's sex, but games like Pokemon where there are no particular advantages aside from style and aesthetics. Why is this?

I've looked up a few of these reasons myself to get this started:
  1. Female characters aren't represented enough so I'm doing my part to change that
  2. Females get better customization options in terms of aesthetics
  3. I prefer to look at female characters than male characters
Anything missing?

Last time I gender-swapped was in Pokemon X/Y, and I must say, I was disappointed to learn the male character didn't have a lot of clothing options - Especially compared to the female trainer. Do any of the guys here really care about clothing options though? Can developers do better to improve options for male characters?

My rule of thumb seems to be that whenever I'm attaching my name to a character, I'll select a male. Honestly, I've never really given it any more thought than "well I'm a male so yeah." I don't really do it because I want to "connect" with the playable character more, as I rarely make characters actually intended to resemble me. It's just sorta what I do. In games where my character can be viewed by others, the decision is also influenced by how I want to be viewed, to some extent.

It's not like I never play as female characters, though. Obviously, if in, say, a fighting game, I like the way a female character plays best, then I'll go with them for that reason. There are even instances in games where the characters are all identical in playstyle, such as in something like Metal Slug, where I'll choose a female character because I like their design best. I guess this mentality doesn't extend to Pokemon for me because, despite the difference in design between the male and female trainers, I'm attaching a chosen name to them and will interact with others through them.

basically it's totally arbitrary for me

5. Playing as a female gives you an advantage in MMO's.

As long as your character is female and you play the part well, people will help you with anything.

Yeah I've seen this too though I couldn't really confirm it since I don't play MMOs. I guess it's not hard for guys to act like girls?

I don't particularly move away from playing as females in games, but usually I default as male because, well, I'm a male. I don't really care what my player character/avatar/whatever looks like most of the time I'm playing, as I'm focused on the game. However, as blues mentioned, clothing options are usually much more varied for females, an example being Pokemon. In such a case, I would prefer to play as the opposite sex. Another would be that many times in various rpgs, females tend to be agile/faster than the male classes, so in that case I choose them.

I just remembered Fire Emblem has the option too, but like Persona 3 Portable, there are actual real benefits to choosing female avatars

There's a benefit? Isn't FE just customization?

...Yeah. Females get Galeforce since Dark Pegasus is a female only class. When playing Min-Max playthroughs, Morgans generally have different options between sexes

In all honesty though, I'd have written almost the same thing as SRT. I'm quoting him instead.

It's kind of random sometimes. I usually just use my name regardless of gender because that's just how I roll.

But I tend to pick female characters if given the option because that's what I like.

I always plays females while i'm male. I don't understand how male players can play male characters to be honest, it makes no sense to me.

you want to stare at a male ass all day long? instead of a girl's ass? doesn't really make sense to me.

Besides that, in most mmo's you also get a **** ton of help when you even pretent to be a female or just never really tell them what you really are. Those games are stamped with insecure little male kids that do everything to talk with a girl it seems.

It's really all the same to me in the end. I usually role male the first time and usually will role female the second time to see if anything is changed and after that it could be either or. Sometimes in games when there is a class, skill, or something of the sort only usable by one sex (My best example is borderlands 2's Siren class) then gender has nothing to do with my decision of one or the other.

I basically never choose female characters, with the exception of the DH in Diablo, just because I don't like how the male version looks.

I prefer to play the "tough guy".

Back when I played Guild Wars, I noticed it was tons easier getting into pick up groups as a female character compared to a male character.

Depending on the game i would choose the gender. If i couldn't make the male character look like i pleased, i would just make a female character.

Good question . The only reason I ever choose a female character is purely boredom. If I have used all the male characters already, I may choose a female when starting over just for something different. However, when I do I generally make my name something like "Ima Dude" just to be funny. Especially if it is an online game, because I don't like other people thinking I am a chick... We all know those gamer guys out there who hit on someone just because they have a female character xD.

Other than that, I don't see the point either unless it's just really a hot animated chick or the choices of guys are horrible to look at.

I usually always tend to gravitate toward female characters in games, especially fighting games; however, for certain games, like Pok?mon, I choose the character's gender based upon my own.
