Default What makes pokemon great?

I know the value this franchise has to offer. But when people refer pokemon, its only recommended for kids. So I'd like to know if it also caters to adults as well (although I'm easily convinced that it does.)

So what is very special about pokemon to you guys in general and why aren't people sick of it regardless of it being nearly the same thing?

It's like asking "What is very special about Mario Kart to you guys in general and why aren't people sick of it regardless of it being nearly the same thing?"

Because "nearly the same thing" isn't bad. That's a thing that ensures a longer series stays relevant. You usually wouldn't expect a completely different game when you jump from game #1 to game #2, or even to game #10. You would expect to be familiar with the game. It's about keeping the core gameplay fans like, while they're allowed to change a few things about it each time (for example, in Pokemon, team battles, mega evolutions, etc.).

As someone who doesn't like RPGs, I find Pokemon to be, mechanically, my favorite RPG series ever. One of my key gripes with RPGs in general is how battles often feel like they're on autopilot, repeating the same tactics encounter after encounter. While Pokemon doesn't really stray from this in single player, the core of the gameplay is team creation, or what happens BEFORE the battles. There's just so much flexibility and so many options that building a brand new team from scratch is enough to keep me entertained game after game.

Plus, it's, bar none, the best competitive RPG series out there. Hell, nothing else even comes close.

Pokemon is very easy to pick up and play. Other RPGs like Final Fantasy can be very difficult to just jump right into with no experience where pokemon it is the complete opposite. Give a pokemon game to nearly anybody of any age and (assuming they have at least basic reading skills and a bit of common sense) and they will be able to play and enjoy the game.

Another reason I feel is that the turn based combat is extremely simply yet extremely advanced at the same time. There are some very complicated strategies people develop to battle and defeat everyone they encounter, yet all you need to really understand is the type advantages and you're able to complete the game. For those who want to play competitively and have bragging rights the complex strategy is there, for those who want to just kill some time here and there they are able to easily as well.

As for what draws in adults, it's just because they're good games. Think of many animated films that are made to target children. Some of the best "children" movies are the ones that entertain adults as well. The same goes for games, the best games (even if targeted at kids) will appeal to a greater audience than they originally targeted.

It's easy to play and it's fun.

Coincidentally, these are the same values that make Mario games just as good.

Yea, easy to pick up and play. Building your team just the way you want it, and the trading aspect too.

It has aspects of collection, battling, and social things like trading, so there is something for everyone.

It's got animals who only want to murder children until you enslave them, proving once again man wins.
Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong.
