Default My 160GB PS3 Won't Play Games

My used 160GB PS3 is refusing to play any of my physical retail game bluray discs.

I think it's the bluray drive/laser, but not 100% sure. Anyways, I was hoping someone here could help me solve the issue please?

Preferably without having to spend any money, I'll be broke until July 26th.

check around online on how to clean the laser eye on your PS3's BluRay drive. That might solve your issue. That involves opening its case so unless you've done something similar before I would advise against it

I've never opened up my PS3 before, or cleaned it's insides.

So I guess I should hire someone to fix it for me, or hope a relative/friend can fix it for free?

That'd be best. Also, if it's still under warranty check with Sony, opening it will definitely void its warranty unless it's from a certified service. This applies to all electronic products.

I had a RL friend take a look at my PS3, and it seems that it is indeed the bluray laser that's malfunctioning, not the bluray drive, DVD laser, or anything else.

I plan on having him repair it, as soon as I can save up $30 Amazon in August to buy the replacement bluray laser. I could buy it this weekend instead, but I would like to buy three more PS3 games before I have to start saving money.

Update: I had my friend look at my 160GB Slim PS3 again, and apparently it's either the Blu-Ray drive itself that's malfunctioning, which will cost me $80 New on eBay, or it's the HDD, in which case I'm hoping just formatting it and re-installing the PS3 OS will fix the problem.

If it is the HDD and formatting/reinstalling doesn't work, I have my eyes set on a 500GB Western Digital for only $50 New on Amazon.

I just hope they're not both malfunctioning, I can't afford to spend $130 all at once.

if your PS3 turns ON and it just wont play disc games, it might be the Bluray thingy.
but if it does not turn ON, the HDD might be the culprit.

I can get it to turn on, play videos, and access the internet...it just sometimes doesn't read game discs.

Or I can get it to play games and load save files, but then it starts freezing and stuff.

since you say it turns ON,
imo, its the bluray lens that is keeping your games freeze sometimes.
there might be micro-dust particles that got inside the slot.

i hope you get it fix mate!
good luck!

Sadly my friend already cleaned the BD lens, and my PS3 still not reading game discs. So it has to be either the entire bluray drive, and/or the HDD.

Thanks for trying to help me though .
