Default Let sleeping dogs lie? The Dale Gribble Dilemma

Okay, I've been wanting to make this thread for a while now and now after watching a certain King of the Hill episode I'm finally doing it. First, some background: in the American animated series, King of the Hill, there is a certain man named Dale Gribble who has been unknowingly raising another man's son. The whole plot point is played off for laughs in the series (the man his wife had an affair with is Native American and so his son is dark skinned. Dale is an idiot and at one point actually believes aliens impregnated his wife) and is very rarely dealt with in a serious manner. Everyone around him seems to know about the affair and yet they chose not tell him. Some, like Hank, choose not to because they don't want to involve themselves in the matter. Others, like Peggy, have decided that Dale is better off not knowing. But what do you think? Should someone have told Dale the truth?

As for me, I would have told him the first chance I got. It pisses me off to no end that his supposed best friends have never said anything. I honestly think his wife is a terrible person and she doesn't deserve to stay married with such a decent person. And, in my opinion, Dale is not enough of an asshole that he would stop having contact with Joseph. As far as that man is concerned, Joseph is his son. But anywho, what do you think? Would you have said something if you had the chance? I know it's all fictional and it's kind of weird discussing things in this much detail, but I've always wanted to know what others think.

This is actually a complicated question but ideally he should have been told ASAP that his wife was unfaithful.

However, I think it wouldn't be the best NOT to tell him now since Joseph considers Dale to be his one and only father and revealing the truth would have practically zero benefits and just make things difficult for Joseph. So I'd wait until Joseph was an adult before I'd tell him.

Nope, wouldn't tell him. If he's going to hear the truth then it should be from his wife. If I knew her well I would encourage her to be straightforward and honest about it. I wouldn't want the guilt of possibly breaking up a marriage, especially with a kid involved.

So that's one "eventually" and a no. Any others?

Tell the truth immediately so as not to face repercussions in the future.

It's better to do it sooner so that the parent won't: 1. Face a lack of trust with their child in the future ("How couldn't you have known!"), 2. Face medical troubles down the line (In case the child needs an organ, being able to find a suitable donor in the biological father etc). 3. Face legal troubles in the future if the said father (In this case Native American) decided to show up once more and cause trouble.

It may seem harsh and it may indeed ruin a marriage, but in the long run it would be better for all parties involved.

I haven't even mentioned the repercussions of the original affair that brought the child (Possible STD's/STI's that may be from the biological father, possible hereditary diseases the child is prone too etc).

In summary, tell the truth immediately.

I'd send someone else to do it, I'm terrible at talking.

i think at that point he would be more of a father to the kid than his real father was, telling him likely wouldnt damage their relationship all that much, so yeah i suppose i would tell him

I always thought that he does know it but is in denial and chose to consciously not knowing it while deep inside it's clear to him how the world spins. He is a different kind of character and his obsession with aliens and conspiracies is a way of dealing with the reality that surrounds him. Some people like to live in the pretend world because that's where they can be, whilst stepping out into reality would make them fall apart.

Well, Dale is a complete nut-job conspiracy theorists chain smoking guy.
Theres no chance in hell he'll ever figure it out AND his being a good father to Joseph.
What's the point in telling him?
I Wouldn't.

Well, if he isn't gonna be a good father, any doubt in my mind (id tell him anyway) would be erased.

Dale should've been told. Nancy is horribly unfaithful to him in their marriage. The fact she got away with the affair and never got caught did irritate me. However, part of me worries on how revealing Nancy's betrayal to Dale would affect Joesph.

How Dale was believing in the false stories on how he received Joesph as his child was quite funny.

I've actually wanted to comment here, but didn't know what to say. I'd say just keep it a secret.

Now I haven't watched the series in a while, but what was Hank's justification for not telling him? Peggy was going to tell him when she found out, but decided not to once she realized the potential damage that could be done to Joseph if Dale overreacted (which is totally possible considering his personality. However, it's important that she only found out once Joseph was already in his teens.

Meanwhile, everyone else knew about this for how long? I'd assume once they first saw Joseph.
