I used to serve in the infantry corps in my country, and due to having lots of spare, dead time to burn, my DS Lite loaded with Pok?mon Black 2 was, at a certain part of my service, my best friend (well... Not really, but it did save me from dying out of sheer boredom). However, due to my tendency to misplace and lose stuff, I adapted a tried-and-true military method into my gaming life: securing your equipment.
See, in combat units, you learn early in basic training that everything you have on you must be attached in some way or another to, well, you, because when you're carrying tons of stuff, you tend to lose some, especially during nighttime, during combat, etc. So you attach the binoculars to the front of your vest, you tie your hat to your shoulder strap, you connect your earplugs to the inside of your helmet, you secure your reflex sight to the weapon with a specialist cord in case it falls, and so on. And you make all those securings by hand, so it broadens your skill and creativity. So, I took a lengthy piece of military-grade cord, strong enough to hold a few dozen kilograms, and tied one end to the little notch intended for the wrist strap, and the other end to a strong plastic clasp. Then, I burned off the knots on both sides to make sure they won't get undone. Afterwards, I could go anywhere with my DS in my pocket, secured to my belt loop, without any fear of losing it. Heck, I found it so useful, that when I got a 3DS XL after finishing my service, I had some military friend still in serco get me the same materials, so I could outfit it with the same securing too, although I'm pretty sure you can get the cord and clasp in any travelers' shop, or maybe a military surplus. You should try it, it's certainly more useful than the wrist strap intended for that notch. Here, see for yourself how it looks like: ![]() |

I actually think this is a pretty excellent idea. It's deceptively simple, but quite clever. So many people are concerned with getting protective cases for their 3DS in case the system is dropped...your solution keeps the drop from happening in the first place. And it's a somewhat decent theft deterrent as well. This is all in addition to your original intent of just keeping tabs your 3DS.
And yes, although I've been a "lurker" on these boards for years now, I felt the need to create an account just to give you a thumbs up ![]() |

This is pretty cool. Is that kevlar cord? Or Type-II paracord maybe?
Though it's not practical in my situation I do see the potential of hooking up a 3DS to something, especially on the go. Oh and I got to say, I love the Pok?mon camo on your 3DS. It's way nicer than multicam ^_~

And yeah, the Pok?mon XY edition is cool... Too bad I'll have to get a new one when the New 3DS comes out...

I'm not in the Army, nor am I American. But I am familiar with the US cords because they are easely obtainable here in the Netherlands. I love Mil-Spec rope because it's compact and tough. I've got a couple of bundles laying around (car, camping etc.) in case I need to tie something down that needs to stay down. As for the N3DSXL, I believe it has interchangable covers. So I guess it will be easy to get a new Pok?mon cover ^_^

I use tons of military-grade stuff in my everyday life, and military-styled solutions, although I'm out of the military for around a year by now. It's just that we're talking about useful and durable stuff, and practical, simple and useful methods, that I can't really shake that part of of me. I think that the faceplate are limited for the normal size, so... Yeah.
